The suspect, Jacoby Johnson, is being held without bond. He faces life in prison if convicted. Ruston police say Johnson was inside the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center when he pulled a knife on a student playing basketball and chased him oustide. That’s when the attack on the four unsuspecting women occurred.

The state’s first customized two-year Associate Respiratory Therapy Apprenticeship program has opened on the campus of LSU Eunice. Chancellor Dr. Nancee Sorenson says the program aims to combat disparities in healthcare while providing opportunities to students.

The U-S Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects there will be a 23 percent increase in Respiratory Therapy jobs by 2030. Students are paid while working towards their degree.

Sorenson says training is paid for through the program and it’s 18 months of academic courses.

Sorenson says Ochsner Lafayette General will provide students with a $25 hundred bonus after each semester is completed. She says students must also complete clinical rotations.

The student must also agree to two and a half years of employment with Ochsner Lafayette General after graduation.

Landry’s appointment to head DEQ, Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto (Jack-ah-metto), has worked for the chemical company Monsanto and Ramaco Resources, a developer of metallurgical coal mines.

Governor-elect Jeff Landry, who will be sworn in on January 8th, says he plans to call a special session for lawmakers to draw a new court-ordered congressional map by January 15th. In the meantime, Governor John Bel Edwards is prepping for one if the deadline is not extended.

The courts have ruled the current congressional map violates the Voting Rights Act because it does not allow for the state’s one-third minority population to be represented with only one majority-Black district and that it must have two.

If the deadline is not extended Edwards says the only possible way to meet the court’s order is for him to call the legislature into session.

Edwards, who vetoed the congressional maps the legislature submitted to him twice, agreed with the courts that they were unconstitutional. Edwards believes the Secretary of State, Attorney General, Speaker, and Senate President can’t prevail on the merits of the current map…

There are also other challenges if a session is called before Edwards leaves office, the current election cycle is not finalized, both chambers are undergoing renovations, the holidays and the current body of lawmakers failed twice to approve a map with a second majority-Black district.

The town of Ruston and Louisiana Tech are reeling and mourning after the attacks outside the Lambright Center Monday and they are coming together Thursday on the school’s campus for a blood drive to benefit the victims. Northeast Louisiana Director of Life Share Blood Centers, Michael Bricker, says it’s important to help replenish the blood supply…

Bricker says that for everyone who donates blood in a victim’s name, Lifeshare provides $15 toward their medical expenses. Artist Annie Richardson succumbed to her injuries and at least one other is still hospitalized.

Lifeshare has received tremendous support from those far and near after Monday’s tragedy and Bricker has a message for those who would like to help.

The LSU Tigers are ranked 15th in the latest AP Poll this season and hold a 7 and 3 record heading into Saturday’s game with Georgia State. LSU’s three losses on the season put their SEC and National Championship hopes in shambles, but LSU defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson says the Tigers still have a lot to play for this season.

Not only is LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly happy with the historic numbers his offense is putting up this season, but defensive end Bradyn Swinson is also happy with their improvement on the field. When questioned about the play of potential Heisman award-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels and potential Biletnikoff award-winning receiver Malik Nabers, Swinson says they’re getting groovy on the gridiron.

LSU offensive Lineman Charles Turner is the last remaining member of the 2019 Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line and he sees many comparable aspects in this year’s offensive line which is a leading competitor for this year’s award. Turner thinks that the most prominent comparison to the 2019 LSU’s O-line is the brother-like connection between the players.

In a press conference earlier today, Governor-elect Jeff Landry announced his first cabinet appointment. Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto will head the Department of Environmental Quality.  Giacometto has a biology degree from Howard, a master’s in molecular genetics from Purdue, and a law degree from the University of Kentucky. Landry says her appointment will attract others to the state.
