Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser is in Japan on a ten-day trip aimed at boosting tourism from that country. Nungesser points out that Japan is the number-two international traveler to America, and he wants to attract as many of those travelers as he can.

Nungesser says prior trips have yielded very good results.

Nungesser says international travelers want to make the most out of their time in the U.S., and Nungesser says that’s why it’s important to promote the entire state.

Keim says the long-range forecast is calling for normal temperatures during the fall, but wetter than normal because of El Nino conditions…

Keim says the state could use the rain as some areas of Louisiana are experiencing severe drought conditions.

This week is Voter Registration Week in Louisiana. Trey Williams with the Louisiana secretary of state’s office says it’s a great occasion to make sure things are in order ahead of the November 3rd election.

Of course, people can register to vote at any time if they haven’t already done so, but Williams says the office uses this week to promote voter registration, because there are a pair of key deadlines coming up.

Williams says once you register, you will remain registered – but it’s your responsibility to keep your registration up to date.

Governor Jeff Landry announces the state is investing 100-million dollars into Louisiana’s fortified roof program, which helps homeowners pay for stronger, more storm-resistant roofs. The program provides grants of up to 10-thousand dollars to install a fortified roof. Landry says those roofs are designed to withstand hurricane-force winds — and can also help lower homeowners insurance premiums.

The first certified fortified roof was installed on a Louisiana home in November 2023. Since then, officials say 55-hundred homeowners have received grants to install a fortified roof.
Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says Louisiana has the fastest growing fortified roof grant program in the country and hopes to hand out five-thousand more grants by the end of the year. He says improving the resilience of homes is key to reducing insurance losses.

Landry says the additional 100-million dollars combines state and federal funding, including unspent hurricane recovery money from previous disasters.
He says the benefits of fortified roofs go beyond individual homeowners. If enough homes in a neighborhood or community have fortified roofs, Landry says even homeowners without one can benefit.

Landry says 48-thousand homeowners have registered with the Louisiana Department of Insurance to receive a fortified roof grant.

LSU football coach Lane Kiffin says the Tigers will have to bounce back from an emotional 32-24 loss to Ole Miss. He says that after watching the film on Monday, the Tigers felt like they lost the game because of missed opportunities.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt missed some open receivers that would have been critical touchdowns late in the game. Kiffin says he explained to the team how the early pass rush from the Rebels affected him as the game went on.
Kiffin says the team was down about the loss initially and then was disheartened again when they saw how winnable the game was.

LSU hosts 23rd-ranked Texas A&M on Saturday. Both teams are coming off losses in their SEC openers.

Saints starting left tackle Kelvin Banks will miss significant time as he undergoes surgery for a high ankle sprain suffered against the Ravens. 2023 fifth-round pick Asim Richards will fill his spot. Richards played nearly 400 snaps after the Saints traded for him last season, and he says that experience goes a long way.

Head coach Kellen Moore says Banks could return later in the season, but his status will be re-evaluated. Moore says the Saints have shown their resilience through their first two games against the Lions and the Ravens.
