The season ending injury to LSU running back John Emery has resulted in the Tigers coaching staff moving freshman JuJuan Johnson from safety to running back. Johnson was Louisiana’s Mr. Football in 2023 as he finished off a legendary career at Lafayette Christian.

 

It’s the first Friday night of the high school football season and there are several big games on tap. Acadiana visits Ruston as the Bearcats begin defense of their Division One non-select state championship game. Two teams that won state championships are meeting tonight in Shreveport as Oak Grove travels across the state to take on Calvary Baptist.

 

After a 40-to-10 win at home to open the season, the Ragin Cajuns are on the road tomorrow to face Kennesaw State. U-L Lafayette Coach Michael Desormeaux is interested to see how his team handles success, because they didn’t handle it well last year…

The Saints are looking to start the season off with a victory as they host the Panthers. New Orleans has won five straight regular season openers. That’s the longest streak in the NFL.

 Jayden Daniels makes his NFL debut as the Commanders are at Tampa and Malik Nabers and the New York Giants will take on Jordan Jefferson and the Vikings.

Mr. Football in 2023 is getting a chance to be a running back for the LSU Tigers. Former Lafayette Christian star Ju’Juan Johnson is the state’s all-time passing leader in Louisiana high school history and he’s also electric with the ball in his hands. With LSU losing John Emery to a season-ending ACL injury, the Tigers are down to three scholarship running backs. Coach Brian Kelly is giving Johnson a look at running back and he might see some carries on Saturday night against Nicholls.

Based on Sunday’s performance against the Trojans, it appears LSU’s defense is better this season. Tigers Defensive end Sai’vion Jones says new defensive coordinator Blake Baker has made a big difference …

Northwestern State hosts Prairie View. The Demons are looking for their first win since November of 2022. Southeastern is at Southern Miss, Grambling hosts Tuskegee, Southern hosts Savannah State, McNeese visits Texas A-and-M and Tulane hosts 17th ranked Kansas State for an 11 AM Kick off.

 

Tonight is the first Friday night of high school football regular season…a big one tonight in Ruston as the defending Division One non-select champs host Acadiana.

LSU starting safety Jardin Gilbert will miss the first half of Saturday night’s game against Nicholls because of a targeting penalty called against him in Sunday’s loss to USC. Also, starting safety Jordan Allen is dealing with turf toe. Coach Brian Kelly says he’s preparing to get freshman Dashawn Spears and redshirt freshman Kylin Jackson on the field more this Saturday…

Running back John Emery announced his Instagram that he had surgery today on his torn ACL.

McNeese State is at Texas A-and-M on Saturday and starting quarterback Clifton McDowell is questionable because of an unspecified injury. If McDowell can’t play, redshirt freshman Kamden Sixkiller, would get the start. He saw against Southern and was 9 of 19 for 80 yards.

ULM is home for a second consecutive week to begin the season as the Warhawks host UAB on Saturday night at 6 PM. Eleven-thousand fans were at the game last Thursday against Jackson State. Coach Bryan Vincent wants a much larger crowd for this Saturday night’s home game against the Blazers…

Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore was listed as full participant at practice today. He was limited on Wednesday due to a hip injury that he sustained during the early days of training camp. But linebacker Willie Gay and offensive lineman Nick Saldiveri continue to be limited by injuries as the team prepares for Sunday’s season opener against Carolina.

The Saints are preparing to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday in the regular season opener. Carolina is led by a first-year coach. During the offseason the Panthers spent 150-million dollars to improve their offensive line by signing guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis. Lewis is a former LSU Tiger and Hunt played for the Ragin Cajuns.

LSU’s leading rusher in last Sunday’s loss to USC, John Emery, is out for the season after tearing his A-C-L in practice during a non-contact drill. Emery, who spent the offseason rehabbing a torn ACL in his right knee suffered last November, was one of four scholarship running backs on the roster. The others are Josh Williams, Kaleb Jackson and freshman Caden Durham. In his first start since being AL Rookie Pitcher of the Month, former Ragin Cajuns star Spencer Arrighetti got lit up last night as he allowed nine runs in two-thirds of an inning as the Astros lost to the Reds 12-5.

The Saints are preparing for Sunday’s season opener against the Carolina Panthers. Even though Carolina is a divisional opponent, there is a bit of an unknown about the Panthers since they have a new head coach in Dave Canales. Canales was previously the Buccaneers offensive coordinator. Coach Dennis Allen says in-game adjustments will be a key on Sunday…

Multiple media outlets are reporting LSU running back John Emery will likely miss the rest of the season after tearing his A-C-L in his knee. Emery rushed for a team high 61 yards in LSU’s loss to USC on Sunday and the injury was reportedly sustained at practice on Tuesday. The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander broke the story and says Emery was poised to have a big season…

LSU wanted to run the ball on Sunday to control the game against USC, but outside of a 39-yard run by John Emery, the Tigers struggled to establish a ground game. Josh Williams rushed for just 33 yards and Kaleb Jackson had 14 yards on five carries. Coach Brian Kelly says they’ll keep rotating their running backs…

Kelly was asked specifically about Kaleb Jackson’s playing weight fo 235 pounds. The coach says they were concerned about it in the spring, but during preseason camp he maintained his conditioning and his speed.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara is entering his eighth season in the NFL and has two years left on his contract with New Orleans. Kamara was seeking a contract extension, but now that the season is starting, he’s focusing on the games not his contract…

The first high school football polls are out…Ruston, Opelousas, University High, Calvary Baptist and Southern Lab are ranked number one in their respective classes.

Former Ragin Cajuns ace Spencer Arrighetti has been named the American League Rookie Pitcher of the Month. Arrighetti has been outstanding for the Astros.

Paul Skenes picked up his ninth win of the season last night as the Pirates blanked the Cubs five to nothing. Skenes recorded six strikeouts in five innings to give him 142 on the season, which ties a franchise record for strikeouts by a rookie since 1900.

ULM linebacker Wydett Willliams has been named the Sun Belt defensive player of the week. The junior had a game-high ten tackles in the win over Jackson State.

Nicholls linebacker Eli Ennis has been named the Southland Defensive Player of the Week. Ennis had an interception and fumble recovery in a loss to La Tech.

Just five days to go before the Saints open their season against the Carolina Panthers in the Superdome. Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen says forget about last season, this will be a new Carolina Panthers team his squad will be facing.

Dave Canales is the Panthers new coach and his success will depend on the development of second-year quarterback Bryce Young. Kick-off in the Dome is at noon.

 

Former Ragin Cajuns ace Spencer Arrighetti has been named the American League Rookie Pitcher of the Month. Arrighetti had 1.95 ERA for the Astros during August as Houston has taken firm control of first place in the American League West.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara has his five-bedroom, nine bathroom house in Belle Chasse on the market. Kamara says it has nothing to do with his desire for a new contract with the Saints that has yet to happen. The 29-year-old Kamara is entering his eighth season and he says he feels good about the offense with first year offensive coordinator Kilnt Kubiak.

 

Former LSU and Rummel Raider star receiver Ja’Marr Chase continues to wait on a new mega contract from the Bengals. He’s listed as the starting receiver on the team’s depth chart, even though he didn’t practice yesterday. Coach Zac Taylor calls it a fluid situation.

For the fifth straight year, the LSU Tigers are starting the season off with a loss. In Sunday night’s 27-20 defeat to USC, the Tigers were penalized ten times. Two of the penalties were 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalties, on Kyren Lacy and Major Burns that helped USC score touchdowns. Coach Brian Kelly says mistakes like that can’t happen…

ULM is preparing to host UAB this Saturday after defeating Jackson State 30-14 last Thursday. Running back Ahmad Hardy’s 103 yard, one touchdown rushing performance was a big key. Hardy is a freshman from Mississippi and Coach Bryant Vincent is really encouraged about his performance…

McNeese defensive lineman Stephen Johnson is the special teams player of the week. He blocked a field goal that started a run of 21 unanswered points n the fourth quarter as the Cowboys defeated Southern 21-7.
