In college football news…Louisiana Tech is looking for a new offensive line coach. Matt Moore has left the Bulldog program for a job at Troy University, where he’ll be the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Trojans. Moore has been with Tech the las two seasons.

Louisiana Tech wide receiver Hunter Lee has been named a recipient of the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award. The award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of C-USA’s student-athletes. Lee and the Bulldogs are prepping to take on the University of Illinois in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl on December 26th.

Last night in college basketball action: UL-Lafayette crushed Milligan College 115-76 and 16th ranked Washington steamrolled Grambling 86-38.

Tonight, Nicholls State travels to Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech. The Colonels are coming off their second win of the season, an 81-75 victory over Arkansas-Monticello, while Tech comes into tonight’s matchup having lost two straight to UL-Lafayette and Syracuse. The Bulldogs are 15-2 all-time against Nicholls.

The LSU Tiger basketball team returns to action as they travel to Bartow Arena to take on the University of Alabama-Birmingham. LSU is looking for their fourth consecutive win and second win on a non-conference opponents home court. Tip off is scheduled for just after 8PM and will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.

The LSU football team is back on the practice field this afternoon. Coach Les Miles said they will begin putting in the game plan for Notre Dame today. Senior safety Ronald Martin says he’s glad to have the opportunity to finish his college career by playing a team like Notre Dame…

Former Jewel Sumner star Jeremy Cutrer has reportedly signed with the LSU Tigers. Cutrer is a cornerback at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

The R-and-L Carriers New Orleans Bowl is this Saturday. Last year’s game between Tulane and UL Lafayette set an attendance record of over 55-thousand. But ticket sales are not as strong for this year’s game between the Cajuns and Nevada. Bowl officials are estimating a crowd of about 40-thousand.

The Saints are back at practice today for their game against Atlanta on Sunday. New Orleans can win the NFC South this weekend with a win over the Falcons and if Carolina loses to Cleveland. The Falcons, who are 5-and-9, can also still win the NFC South. But they need to beat the Saints and Carolina on December 27th to win the division title for the third time in five years.

New Orleans Bowl executive director Billy Ferante says they estimate a crowd of about 40-thousand fans on Saturday morning for their game between the Ragin Cajuns and Nevada. UL Lafayette has reportedly sold over 11-thousand tickets for the game.

The Saints get back to work today to prepare for Sunday afternoon’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. The Dirty Birds have not lost a game this season against an NFC South opponent. Atlanta’s top wide receiver, Julio Jones, didn’t play last Sunday, because of a hip injury, but Falcons head coach Mike Smith anticipates Jones will play against the Saints.

The New Orleans Pelicans scored 41 points in the fourth quarter last night to beat the Utah Jazz 119-111. Anthony Davis led the way with 31 points, Ryan Anderson added 28 points. It was Davis first game back since suffering a chest contusion last Friday night. The Pels are back at the five-hundred mark at 12-and-12.

In college basketball last night….ULM won easily over Central Baptist 78-53, Tulane topped Savannah State 75-67, McNeese State defeated LSU-Alexandria 84-68 and UTEP beat Southeastern Louisiana 80-62.

A Saints fans was charged with simple battery after he allegedly shoved Bears owner George McCaskey to the ground. Authorities say the altercation started when McCaskey arrived to his seat and found 58-year-old Richard Kohnke of New Orleans sitting there. Stadium security ejected Kohnke from the stadium. Kohnke was charged with misdemeanor battery.

The LSU men’s basketball team won its fourth in a row on Saturday, a 76-67 win over Sam Houston State. But point guard Josh Gray went down in the first half with an ankle injury. The Tigers are back in action on Thursday against UAB.

U-L Lafayette’s Shawn Long has been named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Player of the Week. Long had 22 points in a win over Centenary on Saturday and he had 24 points and 15 rebounds in a victory over Louisiana Tech.

Louisiana Tech guard Alex Hamilton is the Conference USA Player of the Week, he had 27 points against the Cajuns and had 20 points in a two-point loss to Syracuse yesterday.

A win tonight for the Saints against the Chicago Bears and they’ll move into sole possession of first place in the NFC South. But which Saints team will show up tonight. The one that beat Pittsburgh on the road two weeks ago, or the one that was embarrassed at home last week to the Carolina Panthers. Former LSU Tiger Odell Beckham caught three more touchdown passes yesterday as the Giants defeated the Redskins 24-13. Beckham finished with 12 catches for 143 yards.

In college basketball…Louisiana Tech nearly pulled off a big win over Syrcause in the Carrier dome. But the Orange held off the Bulldogs 71-69. despite 20 points and three steals from Tech’s Alex Hamilton.

Also yesterday….Iowa State held off Southern 88-75. The LSU Lady Tigers beat Southeastern Louisiana 75-42. DaShawn Harden had 20 points for LSU. Texas thumped Northwestern State 74 to 34 and Washington dribbled past Grambling 84-53. The Grambling men’s team is at Oregon State tonight, while the Lady Techsters host Nicholls State.

The Saints will try to get another win on the road tonight when they face the Chicago Bears. New Orleans went to the Windy City last year and won 26-18 as Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns..

It’s been a frustrating season for the Saints, who have lost four in a row at home, but they’ve won their last two on the road.

Elsewhere in the NFC South, Atlanta lost to Pittsburgh yesterday, 27-20 and the Cam Newton-less Carolina Panthers held off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-17. Carolina now sits atop the NFC South; however, a Saints win tonight and the Black and Gold have sole possession of the division lead.

It was tied at 111 at the end of regulation, but Golden State’s Stephen Curry scored eight of his 34 points in overtime as the Warriors downed the Pelicans 128-122 in the Smoothie King Center. Anthony Davis missed the game due to a chest injury; however, Tyreke Evans scored 34 and Jrue Holiday added 30 for the Pels. The Warriors, who have now won 16 games in a row, no sit with a league best 21-2 mark on the season. The Pelicans fall to 11-12. The Pels next host Utah tomorrow night.

In college basketball, Syracuse squeaked by Louisiana Tech 71-69 and Southern fell to 14th ranked Iowa State 88-78.

Three state high school football champions were crowned Saturday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Livonia is the Class 3-A champion after defeating Amite 43-13. In Class 4-A, Neville, out of Monroe, edged New Orleans’ Warren Easton 28-27. And in the Class 5-A championship game, Acadiana won its second stratight state title by beating Destrehan 23-7.
