There’s not been much to cheer about with the Saints lately, but here’s a feel-good story. The Saints have signed former LSU star and Baton Rouge native Clyde Edwards-Helaire to their practice squad. The running back won a national championship with the Tigers and two Super Bowl Rings with the Chiefs. Signing Edwards-Helaire is a sign running back Alvin Kamara’s groin injury could sideline him for at least this Monday’s game at Green Bay.

So far through the transfer portal, the LSU Tigers have signed two potential starters at receiver and a new starting tight end and cornerback. Tiger Rag Executive Editor Todd Horne says LSU still needs more help along the offensive and defensive lines…

LSU has been linked to Virginia Tech offensive lineman Braelin Moore.

The New Orleans Bowl is tonight in the Superdome at 6 PM as Georgia Southern faces Sam Houston. It’s the first bowl game for the Bearcats since moving up from the F-C-S level and the Eagles are in their second New Orleans Bowl.

La Tech is preparing to play in its first bowl game since 2020 as the Bulldogs will take on 19th ranked Army in the Independence Bowl. Marshall could not play in the Indy Bowl, because they didn’t have enough players. Coach Sonny Cumbie says they are missing some players, but certainly have enough to take on the Black Knights….

The Ragin Cajuns were two and nine in non-conference play, but U-L Lafayette won its Sun Belt opener last night beating Appalachian State 68 to 62 in the Cajundome.

One of the top receivers in the transfer portal has signed at LSU. Former Oklahoma receiver Nic Anderson is big bodied receiver who caught 10 touchdown passes in 2023. He only played a handful of snaps in 2023 because of a groin injury.

Former LSU receiver CJ Daniels has announced he will transfer to Miami.

At this time last week, the Louisiana Tech football team’s season was over, but now they are preparing for a bowl game. The Bulldogs are getting ready to battle Army in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl on December 28th in Shreveport. Tech received a bowl invite after Marshall opted out. Coach Sonny Cumbie is pleased with his team’s first bowl practice…

Marshall could not play in the Independence Bowl, because of a lack of players as there’s been a mass exodus with the Thundering Herd because of a coaching change.

Sun Belt play tips off in men’s basketball tonight and the Ragin Cajuns host Appalachian State. The Cajuns are two and nine entering conference play, but Coach Bob Marlin says a whole new season begins tonight…

ULM will begin Sun Belt play on Saturday against Old Dominion. The Warhawks lost to Houston Christian last night.

The LSU men’s basketball team easily defeated Stetson 99 to 53 last night as the Tigers held the Hatters to just 10 points in the first half. LSU will face much tougher competition once they get into SEC play. It’s a very strong year for hoops in the Southeastern Conference. In fact, the league is 152 and 20 in non-conference play.

The fifth ranked LSU Lady Tigers improved to 13 and 0 last night with a 91 to 64 win over Seton Hall.

The LSU Tigers have signed one of the top wide receivers in the transfer portal. Big bodied Nic Anderson is heading to Baton Rouge after two seasons with Oklahoma. He missed nearly all of the 2024 season because of injury, but the six-foot-three wide out had 38 catches for 798 yards and ten touchdowns as a freshman.

The LSU Tigers also signed edge rusher Jack Pyburn from Florida. Pyburn is the Gators second leading tackler this season and was an emotional leader. Mark McLeod, host of Blitz Sports Radio in Florida, says Pyburn leaving the Gators was a surprise…

Pyburn had 60 tackles, an interception and a sack for the Gators in 2024.

 

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports it’s unlikely Saints quarterback Derek Carr will return this season. Carr fractured his left hand in two places in Week 15 and underwent further examination recently and it doesn’t look like he can return before the regular season ends.

 

The fifth ranked LSU Lady Tigers remained undefeated last night with a solid 91 to 64 win over Seton Hall in the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase in Connecticut. Aneesah Morrow had 24 points and 19 rebounds and Mikaylah Williams made six three-pointers and finished with 22.

 

LSU men’s basketball clobbered Stetson 99 to 53. The Hatters only had 10 points at halftime. That’s the fewest points allowed by LSU in a half since 1959. Five Tigers were in double figures led by Cam Carter who had 16 points.

 

ULM fell at home to Houston Christian 74 to 68, despite 21 points by Jalen Bolen. And 17th ranked Ole Miss beat Southern 74 to 61.

The Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team picked up a nice win over WAC preseason favorite Grand Canyon 74 to 66 last night at the Thomas Assembly Center. Sean Newman had a career-high 25 points and Daniel Batcho added 19 points. Coach Talvin Helster credited the sixth man for helping them get their tenth win of the season…

La Tech will host Rust College on Saturday and then Conference USA play begins on January 2nd.

LSU has three more non-conference games before they start SEC play. Tonight the Tigers host Stetson. ULM wraps up its non-conference schedule tonight by hosting Houston Christian. Southern is at 17th ranked Ole Miss.

NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fisher report the Pelicans are willing to trade anyone on their roster except for three players, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy and center Yves Missi (EVE-MEE-see). New Orleans is a dreadful 5-and-22.

The LSU football program continues to be active in the transfer portal. The latest official signee is edge rusher Jack Pyburn from Florida. He was the Gators second leading tackler for them this season and played well down the stretch to help Florida win five of its last eight games.

Florida State receiver Destyn Hill, who prepped at Edna Karr High School, has also reportedly committed to LSU. And the Tigers have also received a commitment from Virginia Tech cornerback Mansoor Delane. He’s ranked as the second best corner in the NCAA Transfer portal after picking off six passes as a Hokie.

Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi says it’s too soon to tell if running back Alvin Kamara will play against Green Bay on Monday after injuring his groin in the fourth quarter on Sunday…

Sean Newman Junior had a strong game last night for Louisiana Tech men’s basketball and the Bulldogs defeated Grand Canyon 74 to 66. Newman had 25 points and had nine assists as Tech improved to 10-and-2.

Southeastern Louisiana defeated Grambling 75 to 66.

Tonight, LSU men’s basketball hosts Stetson.

The 5th ranked LSU Lady Tigers are in Connecticut to play Seton Hall who is 8-and-2. Associate Coach Bob Starkey spoke following an ugly win over U-L Lafayette on Sunday…

Freshman Michael Van Buren was pressed into the starting role at Mississippi State when Blake Shapen went down with a season-ending injury. In 10 games, Van Buren threw for 1,886 yards and 11 TDs. David Murray covers the Mississippi State Bulldogs for 2-4-7 sports and says Van Buren throws a nice deep ball…

LSU has also landed a commitment from edge rusher Jack Pyburn. Pyburn was Florida’s second leading tackler this season as he recorded 60 tackles, four tackles for a loss, one sack, one forced fumble and an interception. He’s played in 29 games over the last three seasons. He’s the second edge rusher to come to LSU out of the transfer portal, the other is Nebraska’s Jimari Butler.

The Saints trailed the Washington Commanders 17 to nothing in the third quarter, but New Orleans rallied and had a shot to win the game, but they failed on a two-point conversion on the game’s final play and lost 20 to 19. The final day of the LHSAA Prep Classic saw two blowouts. Edna Karr won its fifth championship in ten years by dismantling Alexandria Senior High 53 to 8. In the final game of the Prep Classic, Central completely dominated Ruston 42 to 0 for the Wildcats first state championship since 1966. Bearcats head coach Jerrod Baugh took responsibility for his team’s performance…

New Orleans trailed 17-zip in the third quarter, but the offense came alive when Spencer Rattler replaced Jake Haener at quarterback. The Fourth ranked LSU women’s basketball team beat U-L Lafayette 88 to 57 as Jersey Wolfenbarger had 18 points and 15 rebounds.

The LSU football team has reportedly landed a commitment from Mississippi state quarterback Michael Van Buren. Van Buren started seven games for the Bulldogs and in one of those starts, threw for 306 yards against Georgia.

Meanwhile, LSU Coach Brian Kelly has started the one-million dollar match challenge in an effort to increase NIL dollars for football. Tiger Rag Editor Glenn Guilbeau says it’s refreshing to see Kelly put up his own money….

Three amazing games on day two of the Prep Classic. It all started with Archbishop Shaw’s 28-25 victory over E-D White for the Eagles first state championship since 1987. Shaw’s Michigan signees were the difference as Josh Parker had 174 yards rushing and a touchdown and Jacob Washington caught two touchdown passes.

In the middle game, Catholic High of New Iberia held of a furious fourth quarter rally by Dunham to beat the Tigers 31 to 28. Panthers quarterback Luke Landry threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

And then in the nightcap…Ceclia scored a late touchdown to beat Franklinton 35 to 32. Diesel Solari’s 39 yard touchdown pass to Ellis Stewart with one minute and 17 seconds left will go down as one of the greatest plays in Prep Classic History. Cecilia wins its first state championship since 1995

The Prep Classic wraps up today with two more games. At noon it’s the Division one select state championship game as Alexandria Senior faces the Karr Cougars. The Trojans are making their first ever appearance in the Superdome for a championship game. ASH Coach Thomas Bachmann says Rapides Parish can’t wait for this one…

LSU football needed a tight end out of the transfer portal, with the starter Mason Taylor heading for the NFL. They got one today as Bauer Sharp from Oklahoma has signed with the Tigers. Sarp led the Sooners in receiving this season catching 42 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns.

To boost NIL efforts at LSU, Kelly announced the one-million dollar match challenge. Kelly says his he and wiis wife will match up to one million dollars in new money donated through NIL for football. The one-million dollars from the Kellys will go to the Tiger Athletic Foundation A-D’s Excellence fund.

For the first time since 1987, the Archbishop Shaw Eagles are state champions in football. Shaw outlasted ED White 28-25. The Michigan signees were the difference, Jacob Washington two touchdown catches and Josh Parker 174 yards rushing and one touchdown.  The Cardinals finish three points shy of winning its first state title since 1969.

Tonight Cecilia is back in the Division Two non-select state championship game after losing last year to Opelousas. The Bulldogs will face top-seeded Franklinton at 7 PM. Cecilia is an 18-seed and head coach Dennis Skains says his team has played at a higher level since the postseason…
