In basketball news, the LSU men fell to 1-and-7 in SEC play with an embarrassing 89 to 58 loss to Texas on Saturday.

Nicholls ended McNeese’s 21-game Southland winning streak with a 71 to 63 win in Thibodaux. The Pokes host U-I-W tonight, while the Colonels host Houston Christian.

 

There are a lot of new faces on the LSU baseball team that are expected to contribute this season. One of them is catcher Luis Hernandez, who slugged 23 home runs and drove in 76 runs at Indiana State last season. The native of Puerto Rico is excited about playing for the Tigers this season…

Mikaylah Williams had 22 points and Flau’Jae Johnson had 20 points as the LSU women’s basketball team easily defeated Mississippi State 81 to 67. Johnson hit a season high with four three-pointers. The Lady Tigers have moved up to number six in the latest AP Top 25 poll and LSU is at Missouri on Thursday, 19th ranked Tennessee on Super Bowl Sunday.

The seventh-ranked LSU women’s basketball team defeated Mississippi State 81 to 67 for their 21st consecutive home victory yesterday. Mikaylah Williams had 22 points and Flau’Jae Johnson had 20 points.

 

On Saturday, LSU men’s basketball suffered an embarrassing loss to Texas 89 to 58 at home. The Tigers are 1-and-7 in the Southeastern Conference and in 15th place. Coach Matt McMahon is hitting the reset button…

McNeese lost its first Southland Conference game of the season as they lost to Nicholls 71 to 63. Southern remains undefeated in the SWAC and Louisiana Tech completed a 3-and-0 homestand with an overtime win over Sam Houston.

The Pelicans are at the Denver Nuggets tonight. New Orleans starting point guard Dejounte Murray is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon and is out for the season. Big loss for New Orleans who is 12 and 37.

The NFL Network is reporting the Saints plan to meet again with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. But that meeting will wait until after the Super Bowl on February ninth. It’s a strong signal Moore is the Saints primary target to be their next head coach. The Athletic’s  Diana Russini is reporting the Saints have told the other candidates they are moving on.

Louisiana high school principals overwhelmingly voted down a proposal to allow student-athletes the one-time ability to transfer to another school and not have to sit out a year. LHSAA executive Director Eddie Bonine (Bo-nine) says  Louisiana will expand its voucher program in the coming years and they wanted to see where schools stood on the issue and they got their answer…

The vote was 273 to 66 against the one-time transfer rule.

The LSU men’s basketball team has a chance to get a win on Saturday when they host Texas. The Tigers are coming off a stretch where they played three games against teams ranked in the Top 11. The Longhorns are 3-and-5 in league play.

The Ragin Cajuns host South Alabama on Saturday night. The Jaguars have lost three in a row, including back to back games against ULM. The Warhawks go after their third straight win on Saturday afternoon against Troy.

McNeese will look to go 11-and-0 in the Southland as they visit Nicholls. The Colonels are 6-and-4 in league play.

Louisiana Tech goes after its eighth straight win at home when they host Sam Houston. The Bearcats are just 1-and-7 in Conference USA. Tip time for this one is at 3 PM and it will be televised on ESPN-U.

Southern will look to improve to 8-and-0 in SWAC play as they host Alcorn State. Grambling State is 3-and-4 in league play and they will host Jackson State who is 5-and-2.

Bossier City’s Mikaylah Williams came up huge last night as she scored a season-high 37 points in LSU’s wild 107 to 100 win over 13th ranked Oklahoma. LSU nearly relinquished a 24-point third quarter lead and the Sooners got the game down to one point. But Williams hit her career-high 7th three-pointer with 24 seconds to go and LSU finished the game on a 6-0 run. Williams says she was feeling it after her first three-pointer of the night…

LSU will host Mississippi State on Sunday.

Tyrese Walker hit a couple of big baskets in the final three minutes as ULM defeated South Alabama for the second time this week, a 62 to 58 win over the Jaguars. Ragin Cajuns beat Texas State 70 to 61. Tulane lost to 19th ranked Memphis.

Louisiana Tech men’s basketball will look to complete a 3-0 homestand when they host Sam Houston tomorrow afternoon at the Thomas Assembly Center. The Bearcats are 1-and-7 in Conference USA Play, but Coach Talvin Hester doesn’t want to see his team take them lightly….

LHSAA baseball schools have voted to push back the end of the season. But the new scheduling will not be in place until the 2028 season, because their contract with the host site of the state championships, Sulphur Parks and Recreation, goes through 2027. LHSAA Director Eddie Bonine says the baseball state championships currently fall on graduation weekend…

The 7th ranked LSU women’s basketball team nearly blew a 24-point lead last night but a three-pointer by Mikayla Williams with 24 seconds left helped give the Lady Tigers a 107 to 100 win over 13th ranked Oklahoma. The 107 points the most ever scored by an LSU team in SEC play. Williams finished with 37 points and a career-high seven three-pointers. Coach Kim Mulkey.

Southern Women’s basketball with a win last night as they beat Jackson State 64 to 47.  The lady Jags will be back in action Saturday when they hose Alcorn State at home.

ULM men’s basketball has a two-game winning streak; both wins came against South Alabama. The Warhawks beat the Jaguars 62 to 58 last night and the Ragin Cajuns won at Texas State 70 to 61.

The third-ranked LSU gymnastics squad looks to rebound from last week’s loss to Arkansas by hosting 9th-ranked Missouri inside the PMAC tonight at 7:30. Junior gymnast Ashley Cowan….

There’s a top 25 matchup in the PMAC tonight as the seventh ranked LSU women’s basketball team hosts 13th ranked Oklahoma. The Lady Tigers are 6-and-1 in the SEC, while the Sooners are 4-and-3.

The LSU men’s basketball team fell to 1-and-6 in SEC play with an 87 to 74 loss to top ranked Auburn last night. Coach Matt McMahon says turnovers and a lack of rebounding continue to keep hurting this team…

In action tonight, the Ragin Cajuns are at Texas State and after beating South Alabama on Monday night, ULM faces the Jaguars again, this time in Mobile.

Since flying up to Philadelphia to interview Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, news on the Saints coaching search has gone silent. NFL analyst and WWL sports talk show host Mike Detillier says that’s because New Orleans has most likely decided Moore will be there next head coach and will have to until after the Super Bowl to name him…

Moore is 36-years-old and a former quarterback at Boise State. He’s been an offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, Chargers and now the NFC champion Eagles.

The Advocate is reporting former Florida State assistant Alex Atkins will be the LSU Tigers new tight ends coach and running game coordinator. Atkins was the offensive coordinator at FSU the last three seasons. In 2023, the Seminoles went 13-and-1, but last year they only won two games and he was fired in November.

NFL analyst and WWL’s Mike Detillier says Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is likely the Saints next head coach. Detillier says Moore was known as a pass-happy offensive coordinator when he was with the Cowboys and Chargers, but he’s adjusted to the personnel in Philadelphia to help the Eagles reach the Super Bowl…

The LSU men’s basketball team could not keep up with top ranked Auburn last night losing 87 to 74. The Tigers turned it over 20 times and it led to 22 Auburn points.

A 30-year Marine Corps veteran has received two suite tickets to the Super Bowl and it was former LSU star and Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels who told Jonthan Knauth (kuh-NOWTH) from Virginia about the wonderful surprise. Daniels made the announcement in a video message and Knauth will get to meet Jayden personally next week…

Calvary Baptist head football coach Rodney Guin is the New Orleans Saints nominee for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year. Guin, led the Cavaliers to a semifinal appearance in 2024 and in 2023 he directed Calvary Baptist to a state championship. He’ll find out this week if he’s the national coach of the year and he’s also getting two Super Bowl tickets.

Cam Carter scored 24 points for LSU, but the Tigers turned it over 20 times and allowed 25 offensive rebounds. Coach Matt McMahon’s team falls to 1-and-6 in the SEC…

Trey Murphy had 32 points, Zion Williamson had 29 points, but the Pelicans still lost last night at the Smoothie King Center, falling to the Dallas Mavericks 137 to 136. New Orleans is now 12 and 36 on the season.

A Super Bowl-winning coach is no longer interested in the Saints head coaching vacancy. Former Cowboys and Packers coach Mike McCarthy has removed his name from consideration. But NFL analyst and WWL Radio’s Mike Detillier says McCarthy knows he’s no longer the top candidate and the Saints are more interested in Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore……

Detillier is expecting the Saints will name Moore as its new head coach after the Super Bowl.

 

The Advocate is reporting LSU is expected to announce former Florida State assistant Alex Atkins as the Tigers new tight ends coach and running game coordinator. Atkins was the offensive coordinator at FSU for three seasons. In 2023, the Seminoles had a top 20 scoring offense, but he was fired last November after a two win season.

LSU football coach Brian Kelly is busy adding to his staff. Louisiana native and former McNeese football coach Lance Guidry has reportedly been hired as analyst after spending the last two seasons as the Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator.

And Wilson Alexander of the Advocate reports former Florida State offensive coordinator Alex Atkins will be the Tigers new tight ends coach and running game coordinator.

LSU’s starting shortstop last season Michael Braswell is in competition with Steven Milam to be the starting shortstop this season. If Milam wins the job, Braswell will move to third base and the senior says he’s comfortable at the hot corner…

Milam might win the job at shortstop because he’s the better defender.

Former LSU star Paul Skenes is on the cover of the MLB The Show 25 video game that will hit the market on March 18. Skenes was last year’s NL Rookie of the Year and he’s sharing the cover with two other young stars, Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson and Reds shortstop Elly Del La Cruz.

Former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is no longer in the running for the Saints head coaching job. And Multiple reports are saying Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has emerged as the front-runner to land the job. Saints officials went to Philadelphia to interview the young play caller.

The Saints have also spoken to Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Kafka is a coach at the Senior Bowl this week and talked about his interview experience with the Saints…

Former Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator Lance Guidry has reportedly been hired as an analyst at LSU. Guidry was the D-C in Miami the last two seasons but lost his job after Miami lost late leads in a couple of games that cost Miami a shot at the college football playoffs. The Welsh native was the head coach at his alma mater, McNeese, from 2016 to 2019.

 

The LSU men’s basketball team will try to take down the top ranked team in the country in the Auburn Tigers. Auburn leads the SEC in field goal percentage at 49-percent, while is one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the country.  The Tigers are 320th in the country in three-point shooting at 31-percent.
