Oklahoma’s starting pitcher tonight, Kyson Witherspoon is a future first round draft pick. He’s 5-and-1 with a 2.32 ERA, but Witherspoon struggled last week, allowing five earned runs in 4.1 innings against Alabama.

Grambling State needs a new men’s basketball coach. Donte Jackson has left the program to be the new head coach at Alabama A-and-M. Jackson led Grambling to the NCAA Tournament last year. The first trip to the Big Dance for the G-Men in three decades.

The defending national champion LSU gymnastics squad begins its NCAA postseason journey tonight as they will compete in the Penn State Regional. LSU won the SEC regular season championship, and they won the SEC Gymnastics meet. Mike Smith who is the announcer at LSU gym meets says the Tigers are the favorites to repeat as national champs…

LSU is the number one seed for the first time in program history. Tonight’s meet begins at 6 PM.

The NFL Network Ian Rapoport is reporting the Saints are among the teams that could select a quarterback early in the NFL draft. New Orleans has the ninth overall pick. ESPN’s Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft has the Saints selecting Ole Miss Q-B Jaxson Dart with the ninth overall pick.

Tulane quarterback TJ Finley has been arrested for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle. Finley told authorities he bought the Dodge Ram in Atlanta, but police say it’s a stolen truck from Georgia. Finley has been suspended from the Tulane football program.

Oklahoma is set to start one of the top pitchers in college baseball. Six-foot-two right hander Kyson Witherspoon is second in the SEC in strikeouts.

Louisiana Tech had its bats going last night as they routed the Ragin Cajuns 16 to six. Zeb Ruddell hit a home run in his second straight game. The Bulldogs will host FIU this weekend, while the Cajuns will take on Texas State.

 

The defending national champion LSU gymnastics squad begins its NCAA postseason journey tonight as they will compete in the Penn State Regional.  The Tigers are once again led by All-Americans Haleigh Bryant and Aleah Finnegan. Kailin Chio is the SEC Freshman of the Year and Mike Smith who handles the public address announcing at LSU gym meets says they’ll have to count on a couple of other freshmen during this postseason run…

Tonight’s meet begins at 6 PM and if the Tigers finish in the top two of tonight’s session, they advance to the regional final on Saturday.

ULM students are voting on whether to impose an athletic fee. ULM’s athletic budget is the lowest in the Sun Belt Conference, and adding the per-student fee would help it get in line with other schools in the conference. The proposal is 75 dollars per full-time student per semester. It would generate about 600-thousand dollars in the first year – money that would go towards things like enhanced nutrition programs for student-athletes and a new scoreboard in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Voting concludes today.

The Tigers have the third best batting average in the country, and they have three regular starters hitting over .400, including Ethan Frey. Coach Jay Johnson says he’s glad to see Frey have a breakout season in his junior campaign

Oklahoma’s strength on offense is its speed. O-U leads the SEC with 74 stolen bases.

In action last night…Tulane doubled up Northwestern State eight to four and Louisiana Tech clobbered the Cajuns 16 to 6.

LSU men’s basketball’s third signee out of the transfer portal averaged nearly 19 points a game at Northeastern this season. Coach Matt McMahon says six-foot-six guard Rashad King can score at all three levels and is excellent on the defensive glass. In 32-games for the Huskies last season, King shot 45-percent from the field, 32-percent from three-point territory.

Former Louisiana Tech star Sean Newman has committed to San Diego State. Newman finished third in the country in assists, averaging eight assists a game.

McNeese has signed former four-star recruit Jacolb Fredson-Cole. The six-foot-seven forward barely saw any playing time at Oklahoma this past season.

LSU women’s basketball’s point guard Last-Tear Poa has entered the transfer portal. Poa has been a key reserve for LSU, handling the ball and playing good defense, and is a member of the 2023 national championship team.

The seventh ranked LSU baseball team improved to 10-0 in midweek games last night with a 12-3 win over Louisiana Tech. It was an excellent time to give a few freshman pitchers some experience. LSU will begin a seven-game road trip tomorrow night as they open an SEC series at Oklahoma.

Louisiana Tech is in Lafayette tonight to face the Ragin Cajuns. U-L defeated Northwestern State nine to seven last night for its fourth win in a row. The Cajuns are now 15-and-15 on the season. The Demons are 18-and-10 and they are Tulane tonight.

At the NFL owners meetings, Saints head coach Kellen Moore talked about the team’s decision to resign tight end Juwan Johnson to a three-year, 30.8 million dollar contract. The 28-year-old Johnson had a career-high 50 receptions last season, but Moore believes he can make Johnson an even bigger threat in the passing game.

LSU men’s basketball has signed a third player from the transfer portal. Six-foot-six Rashad King is averaging 18.5 points a game at Northeastern.

LSU men’s basketball has added another scorer out the transfer portal as six-foot-six guard Rashad King has committed to the Tigers. King averaged 18.5 points at Northeastern this season.

LSU baseball won its fifth straight last night as the Tigers defeated Louisiana Tech 12 to 3. Ethan Frey had a big night as he homered and drove in four runs. Jared Jones also homered. Two former LSU Tigers homered for the Bulldogs, Zeb Ruddell and Brody Drost. Tech will be in Lafayette tonight.

The Cajuns are back at the five-hundred mark record wise after outscoring Northwestern State nine to seven. Carson Helpworth drove in three runs for U-L Lafayette.

ULM had a season high 16 hits and doubled up Stephen F Austin eight to four. Brennan Eager won his fourth game of the season as he threw five innings and did not allow an earned run.

Southeastern defeated South Alabama eight to six, McNeese 21 to 3 over Alcorn and UNO knocked off Southern 20 to 9. ‘

The NFL owners have tabled a vote on whether to ban the tush push. But they approved several new rule changes. The dynamic kickoff is staying, but touchbacks will go from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line. Each team will be guaranteed a possession in overtime in the regular season and the NFL will use virtual technology to replace chain gangs for first downs.

Saints Coach Kellen Moore spoke with reporters at the NFL Owners’ meetings. Moore says the team added real value during free agency, highlighted by the signing of safety Justin Reid, who just won a Super Bowl with Kansas City….

LSU women’s basketball is losing one of its starters. One day after the team’s season ended with a loss to UCLA, redshirt sophomore Sa’Myah Smith jumped into the transfer portal. Smith played her best basketball in the NCAA Tournament, scoring 20 points against Florida State and a career-high 21 points in the Sweet 16 win over North Carolina State.

The Pelicans have announced Zion Williamson is done for the season with a back injury. Williamson only played in 30 games this year.

LSU men’s basketball planned to be aggressive in the transfer portal and we are starting to see it. The Tigers have signed UNLV point guard Dedan Thomas who chose the Tigers over Kentucky and Florida. He led the Runnin’ Rebels in scoring and assists, averaging 15 points and four assists a game this season. The Tigers have also signed six-foot-ten Michael Nwoko (nuh-WOE-koe), who started at Mississippi State this season and averaged six points a game.

LSU went 3-15 in the SEC and finished in 15th place. But Coach McMahon says Vanderbilt and Missouri were in the NCAA Tournament this season after finishing at the bottom of the conference standings a year ago…

Busy night of college baseball in Louisiana. La Tech will visit seventh ranked LSU tonight. Tech comes to Baton Rouge after taking two of three from Kennesaw State. The Bulldogs are 17-11 overall, 4-2 in Conference USA play. Coach Lane Burroughs on the busy week…

The Pelicans are in full tank mode, as they are sitting Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum for the rest of the season because of injuries. The Pels have the fourth-worst record in the NBA. There are seven games left including tomorrow’s night’s game against the Clippers.

LSU men’s basketball planned to be active in the transfer portal and we are already seeing the fruits of their labor. One of the top point guards in the portal, Dedan Thomas Junior committed to LSU. The six-foot-one sophomore chose the Tigers over Florida and Kentucky. He averaged 15 points and four assists a game last season for UNLV.

And Coach Matt McMahon has signed six-foot-ten, Michael Nwoko (nuh-WOE-koe), who was a starter at Mississippi State and averaged six points and four rebounds a game this year. He will be a junior next season.

LSU women’s basketball forward Sa’Myah Smith has entered the transfer portal. Smith played well in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 14 points and ten rebounds a game.

Louisiana Tech begins a five-game week in south Louisiana as the Bulldogs will visit 7th ranked LSU tonight and then travel to Lafayette to face the Ragin Cajuns tomorrow. Tech coach Lane Burroughs knows his players are excited to play at Alex Box Stadium tonight…

The LSU women’s basketball team’s season ended Sunday with a loss to UCLA in the Elite Eight and now All-American guard Flau’jae Johnson has a decision to make. She’s eligible for next month’s WNBA draft and could forgo her senior season and turn pro. Johnson won a national championship at LSU her freshman season and averaged 18 points this season, her junior campaign. Coach Kim Mulkey would be sad to see Johnson go…

Johnson said she plans to discuss her decision with her family and Mulkey before making an announcement about her future plans.

Five star safety Blaine Bradford of Catholic High in Baton Rouge has committed to Ohio State over LSU. He’s ranked as the number one safety in the country. His older brother, Jacob Bradford signed with LSU last December as a four-star safety.

And it looks like starting pitcher Chase Shores will be okay, after he took a one-hopper to his face during his start on Saturday night. LSU will host Louisiana Tech tomorrow. The Bulldogs are coming off a series victory of Kennesaw State.

The Cajuns swept James Madison and they are now one game back of Southern Miss for first place in the Sun Belt. ULM is in last place after losing its series against Arkansas State.

Northwestern State swept a series against Nicholls and Balin Valentine was named Southland Hitter of the Week after hitting four home runs last week.
