Playing much better football this Saturday is a big storyline for LSU heading into its home opener against McNeese. The other major storyline is that Tigers Coach Ed Orgeron will spend this week trying to figure out how to defend his son, Cody, who is the starting quarterback for the Cowboys.

Orgeron started three games in 2018 and became the full-time starter in 2019. This past week, Orgeron threw for a career-high 361 yards in a season-opening loss to West Florida. Starter Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, rookie Ian Book and the team just brought back Trevor Siemian. Based on what Coach Sean Payton said yesterday, it sounds like Hill will go back to playing a variety of positions on offense….

The Saints are also expected to sign veteran cornerback Desmond Trufant. Trufant has eight years of NFL experience with Atlanta and Detroit. He was recently released by the Bears.

After opening the season with a 49-28 victory over North Alabama on Saturday in Florence, Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana moved up three spots to number 14 in the latest F-C-S Coaches poll. Lions Q-B Cole Kelley was named Southland Offensive player of the week. S-L-U Cornerback Ferlando Jordan was named Southland Defensive Player of the week.

In the high school football polls, University High is the newly ranked number one team in Class 3A after beating Class 5A Central 39-7. Union Parish has moved up to number two and Madison Parish has moved up to five after beating St. Thomas More 38-35.

The Saints are preparing for the season opener at the team’s temporary practice facilities in Fort Worth, Texas. Later this week, New Orleans will head to Jacksonville where they’ll host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Payton says the plan is for the team to return to Fort Worth next week and no timeline has been established on when they will return to the Big Easy.

The LSU Tigers were pushed around in a 38-27 season-opening loss to the UCLA Bruins in Pasadena on Saturday night. UCLA had 470 yards of total offense as they hit on several big plays, while LSU never established a running game, rushing for just 49 yards. LSU will have an opportunity to get better this Saturday as they host McNeese for the home opener. The Cowboys are coming off a loss to West Florida. McNeese’s quarterback Cody Orgeron, Ed Orgeron’s son.

The 23rd ranked Ragin Cajuns were unable to pull off the upset in Austin as U-L Lafayette fell to the 19th ranked Texas Longhorns 38-18. Even though the Cajuns had more first downs than Texas, the Longhorns were better on third down and U-L Lafayette could not get a ground game going. Cajuns coach Billy Napier says they did some good things, but there were some opportunities they missed

The Ragin Cajuns host Nicholls for its home opener this Saturday. The Colonels lost to Memphis on Saturday and it will be another difficult week of preparation for Nicholls as power is scarce in Lafourche Parish.

The Bruins are not known as a physical football team, but they won the battle in the trenches as UCLA rushed for 210 yards, while LSU rushed for just 49 yards. LSU and Vanderbilt were the only two SEC teams who did not win this past weekend and Ole Miss plays tonight against Louisville.

Game week has arrived for the Saints as they will get ready the Packers at their temporary practices facilities in Fort Worth, Texas on T-C-U’s campus. Green Bay is a 4.5 point favorite.

It was a rough weekend for Louisiana college football teams. Only Southeastern Louisiana and Grambling pulled out victories. The Lions defeated North Alabama 49-28 as S-L-U outscored North Alabama 35 to 14 in the second half. And yesterday, after a winless spring, Grambling topped Tennessee State 16-10 in Canton, Ohio.

Louisiana Tech blew a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter and lost to Mississippi State 35-34 on Saturday. La Tech forced four turnovers, Trey Baldwin had a pick-six and quarterback Austin Kendall played well in his Bulldog debut, but they couldn’t finish. Coach Skip Holtz…

It’s the first Saturday of the college football season and the 16th ranked LSU Tigers are looking to start the season on a good note as the Bayou Bengals visit the UCLA Bruins in the Rose Bowl. At 3:30 today, 23rd ranked U-L Lafayette will tangle with 21st ranked Texas in Austin. The Cajuns are coming off a 10-and-1 season and they bring a seven game winning streak into the Lone Star state. It’s Steve Sarkisian’s first game as head coach of Texas.

ULM and Louisiana Tech are both on the road today, taking on SEC teams. The Warhawks are at Kentucky as it’s the first game with Terry Bowden as ULM’s head coach. The Warhawks’ last win over an SEC opponent came in 2012 over at that time eighth-ranked Arkansas.

Louisiana Tech is at Mississippi State. Tech is expected to lean on its defense as they return ten starters on that side of the football.

Tulane is at second-ranked Oklahoma. McNeese hosts the defending champs in Division Two, West Florida. Despite extensive hurricane damage in Lafourche Parish, Nicholls is at Memphis. Instead of playing in Hammond, Southeastern Louisiana is at North Alabama. Southern is at Troy at 6 PM.

High school football last night, there were a pair of games that featured teams that won a state championship last December. Madison Prep came from behind to beat St. Thomas More 38-35, Acadiana edged Carencro nine to seven. In north Louisiana, Neville nipped Ruston 27 to 24, Mangham upset Oak Grove 27 to 23 and Union Parish defeated Many 42-32.

The 23rd ranked Ragin Cajuns will look to make a huge statement when they face 21st ranked Texas in Memorial Stadium in Austin. Terry Bowden will make his debut as head coach of ULM tomorrow when the Warhaks visit Kentucky for a game that will kick off at 11 AM on the SEC Network. There are 62 players on the roster that are new to the program, including Rhett Rodriguez who will start at quarterback.

Louisiana Tech’s roster features 18 transfers and the Bulldogs will open the season in Starkville against Mississippi State. Former Oklahoma and West Virginai quarterback Austin Kendall will take the first snap for Tech.

The 23rd ranked Ragin Cajuns are looking to open the season for a second consecutive year with a win on the road against a Big 12 opponent. Last year, U-L Lafayette knocked off Iowa State, tomorrow they seek to pull off an upset by beating 21st ranked Texas. Coach Ed Orgeron says freshman wide receiver Malik Nabers and freshman running back Armoni Goodwin will not play because of injuries. But Coach O says despite these injuries, they are as healthy as they’ve been since they started preseason camp…

LSU and UCLA are set to kick off at the Rose Bowl at 7:30 on Saturday. Orgeron will take the team to the historic stadium on Friday so they can take pictures and soak in the atmosphere.

There are several college football games tonight and one involving a team from the SEC. Tennessee hosts Bowling Green at 7 PM on the SEC Network.

A pre-sale for tickets to the Saints season opener in Jacksonville against the Green Bay Packers went on sale today at 10 AM. To purchase tickets, visit ticketmaster.com. The team has the rest of the week off and they will resume practices in Fort, Worth Texas on Monday. They will use T-C-U’s facilities to conduct practices and lift weights until they can return to New Orleans.

Sports Illustrated reports Tulane will play its home games at Legion Field in Birmingham until they are able to return to on campus facility in New Orleans.

Graduate transfer Austin Kendall will start at quarterback when Louisiana Tech meets Mississippi State in Starkville on Saturday. Coach Skip Holtz says he’s been impressed with how Kendall has operated the offense

Because New Orleans is not an option, the Saints will play their first game of the regular season in Jacksonville. Nola-dot-com’s Jeff Duncan says one of the reasons why the Black and Gold preferred Jacksonville, is that it will be harder for Green Bay fans to get to the game. LSU wraps up its stay in Houston as they will travel to Los Angeles today for Saturday’s season opener against UCLA. Tigers coach Ed Orgeron says they’ve treated this week like a bowl week. The Bruins already have a game under their belt. They walloped Hawaii 44-10 on Saturday. Orgeron says UCLA’s defense looks much improved

Former Louisiana Tech basketball star Paul Millsaps has signed with the Brooklyn Nets. Millsaps has played 15 NBA seasons and last year he averaged nine points and five rebounds a game for the Nuggets.

The 2021 high school football season begins tonight, but most schools in southeast Louisiana are sitting week one out, and for some teams, who knows when they’ll take the field again. LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine says the association has made no decision regarding the status of teams who will be forced to miss multiple games.
