After catching 45 passes in his freshman season, Boutte played in six games last season and caught nine touchdown passes before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

Sean Payton head coaching rumors are starting to swirl again. Payton is expected to be a part of Fox’s broadcasting crew this season, but in 2023, Payton would be interested in being the head coach in Miami, Dallas or for the Los Angeles Chargers. That’s according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Jackson’s report says Payton wants to coach in warm weather and with a roster that can compete immediately.

Louisiana Tech baseball has officially added two transfers, pitcher Rawley Hector from Texas A-and-M. Hector appeared in nine games last season for the Aggies. Also heading to Ruston is former Barbe star and LSU outfielder Brody Drost. Drost was named the 2020 Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year but only hit .226 in two seasons at LSU. Also, former LSU pitcher Jacob Hasty has reportedly transferred to Missouri.

The original “Voice of the Cajuns” Ron Gomez has passed away at the age of 87. Gomez called games for the Cajuns from 1961 to 1979 and then went into the state legislature and got behind legislation that led to the construction of the Cajundome.

The Pelicans defeated the Washington Wizards 106-88 in NBA Summer League Action last night. Jared Harper who played in the G-League last season, had 18 points and six assists. New Orleans is 2-1 in Las Vegas and will play the Lakers tomorrow night.

The Southland Conference has released an updated football schedule that includes U-I-W and Lamar. The two Texas schools planned to play in the WAC this season, but recently decided they’ll compete in the Southland instead. U-I-W won the Southland last season and they’ll begin the conference play by visiting Southeastern on September 24th. That weekend Northwestern State will host Lamar.

The Pelicans have another summer league game tonight against the Washington Wizards and hopefully no one else will get hurt. The team announced that second round pick E-J Liddell will be out indefinitely after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee during a Summer League game on Monday night.

LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson got some good news today as signee Paxton Kling announced he’s removing his name from the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft which means he’s heading to Baton Rouge to play for the Purple ad Gold. The outfielder is the Gatorade Player of the Year in Pennsylvania and considered a Top 50 MLB Prospect.

SEC Media Days begin next week in Atlanta. LSU’s announces that wide receiver Jack Bech, linebacker Mike Jones Junior and edge rusher B-J Ojulari will join head coach Brian Kelly when LSU takes its turn on Monday.

The Saints say their first training camp practice will be July 27th and the first practice open to the public will be July 30th. Fans should go to the Saints website to reserve tickets.

Bad injury news for the Pelicans as second round pick E-J Liddell is out indefinitely after tearing his A-C-L in a summer league game on Monday night. A date for surgery has not yet been determined. New Orleans next summer league game is tonight against Washington at 5 PM.

The LHSAA says there’s a great need for officials as another high school sports season is right around the corner. LHSAA assistant executive director Lee Sanders says one of the issues they face is retaining officials after working games for just a year or two….

The Saints announced today that training camp practices will begin on July 27th. The first one open to the public will be on July 30th at the team’s training facility in Metairie. To register for tickets go to the Saints website. The team will also hold a practice inside the Superdome on August 21st that will be open to the public.

After beating Atlanta 101 to 73 in Summer League Action last night, the Pelicans are one and one, but will probably play the rest of their games this Summer without their top two draft picks. First round pick Dyson Daniels is out after spraining his ankle on Saturday and then last night, second round pick E-J Liddell went down with a knee injury. No word on the M-R-I results.

The Sun Belt has released its conference basketball schedule. The Ragin Cajuns tip-off league play on December 29th at Coastal Carolina. They will host Sun Belt Tournament champion Georgia State on January seventh. ULM also opens conference play on the road as the Warhawks will visit Texas State on December 29th. They’ll host Georgia State January fifth and the Ragin Cajuns on January 12th.

In baseball, former LSU Tiger Josh Smith hit his first major league home run last night to help the Rangers outscore the As 10 to 8. It was an inside the park home run.

LSU received a commitment today from a four-star running back out of Baton Rouge. Kaleb Jackson who is getting ready for his senior season at Liberty Magnet, also considered Alabama, but he’s staying home. Jackson’s commitment means LSU has the top two running backs in the state in its 2024 class. Trey Holly of Union Parish is also heading to LSU.

Next week is SEC Media Days and LSU’s Brian Kelly and three players will meet with hundreds of reporters on Monday. The Athletic’s Brody Miller reports LSU’s student-athlete representatives will be wide receiver Jack Bech, linebacker Mike Jones Junior and edge rusher B-J Ojulari.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame announces its inducting former Saints wide receiver Marques Colston into his hall of fame class of 2022. Colston was a seventh round draft pick for New Orleans and after ten seasons he ended up as the franchise’s all-time leading receiver and 72 touchdowns is the most in Saints history.

The Pelicans Summer League team defeated the Atlanta Hawks 101-73 last night as last year’s first round pick, Trey Murphy, scored 30 points. But this year’s second round pick, E-J Liddell went down with a knee injury and will undergo an MRI. The team has already announced that first round pick Dyson Daniels will miss the rest of the Summer League with an ankle injury.

Lamar University has decided to return to the Southland Conference a year earlier than scheduled as the school in Beaumont says it will compete as a member of the Southland after spending last season in the WAC. This gives the Southland eight football-playing schools and ten overall as the league has bounced back after losing five teams including the Cardinals last year.

Former Grambling State volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas told 24-7 sports an effort from previous athletes she coached and current members of the Grambling volleyball team got together to get her fired. Lucas was terminated last week after she allegedly released all of the players on the team, a claim she denies in that 24-7 sports report.

LSU football received another commitment last night. This one from a 2024 prospect. Jo-Jo Stone from Georgia is rated as the 107th best player in the 2024 recruiting class according to 24-7 sports. Stone is listed as an athlete.

The LSU football program added to its 2023 recruiting class over the weekend. On Friday night, five-star wide receiver Jalen Brown from Gulliver Prep in Miami announced his verbal pledge to the Tigers. 24-7 sports ranks Brown as the fourth best wide receiver in the country.

And on Saturday, LSU added its 14th commitment for the class of 2023 with a verbal pledge from three-star linebacker Whit Weeks from Watkinsville, Georgia. He’s the younger brother of LSU linebacker West Weeks, who transferred to LSU after appearing in 11 games for Virginia last season.

And LSU could gain another commitment tomorrow from Liberty Magnet running back Kaleb Jackson of Baton Rouge.

The man convicted of killing LSU basketball star Wayde Sims back in 2018 was found dead in his East Baton Rouge Parish jail cell Sunday. An initial toxicology report shows 21-year-old Dyteon Simpson may have overdosed on fentanyl. He was just sentenced to life in prison last week.
