Myles Brennan, Jaden Daniels, Garrett Nussmeier and Walker Howard will compete for starting quarterback when preseason camp begins in a couple of weeks. Kelly says the offensive line will need to come together the fastest in order for the Tigers to compete in the loaded SEC West.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey also spoke today and said there are no plans to expand beyond Texas and Oklahoma who are still on track to join the league in 2025.

He was one of the best hitters in college baseball this past season, which is why the Miami Marlins used the sixth overall pick to take LSU’s Jacob Berry. The second-team All-American hit .370 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs. LSU second baseman Cade Doughty was selected in the second round. Today, LSU reliever Eric Reyzelman was selected in the fifth round by the New York Yankees. The right-hander from California was 1-3 with a 4.04 ERA and three saves for the Tigers.

In the fourth round, Toronto took Louisiana Tech pitcher Ryan Jennings, who was five and one with a 3.59 ERA.

Former LSU Tiger Jacob Berry was selected number six overall in the Major League Baseball draft by the Miami Marlins. He’s LSU’s first first-round draft choice since 2017 and the Tigers’ highest pick since 2015, when Alex Bregman was selected number two overall by the Astros. The Toronto Blue Jays took LSU second baseman Cade Doughty with the 78th pick in the second round.

The Pelicans wrapped up the summer league with a 107-71 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. John Butler Junior was six of six from three-point territory and finished with 25 points. He also had seven rebounds. Butler is from Florida State and went undrafted. New Orleans went three and two in the summer league.

The Blazers won the Summer League Championship with an 85-77 win over the New York Knicks. Former LSU Tiger Trendon Watford earned MVP honors as he scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

LSU women’s basketball commitment and Parkway star Mikaylah Williams had 10 points and six rebounds as the United States defeated Spain 82-61 to win the gold medal in the under 17 Women’s World Cup in Hungary. Williams is rated as the nation’s number one recruit for the class of 2023.

Australian Cameron Smith rallied from four shots down yesterday to win his first British Open Championship. Smith shot a 64 and had a run of five straight birdies on the back nine to edge Cameron Young by one shot and Rory McIlroy by two strokes.

The Major League Baseball Draft begins tomorrow and Tigers Baseball Coach Jay Johnson will soon have a better idea how many players from his 2022 recruiting class will end up at LSU. Nine of Johnson’s recruits are ranked among the Top 100 MLB draft prospects. But LSU’s coach believes going to school before professional ball is a better path to the majors…

LSU has seven players this summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League and two other Tigers, Dylan Crews and Tre’ Morgan won a bronze tournament for team U-S-A at an international tournament in the Netherlands.

The Pelcians dropped to two and two in the Summer League with a 102-94 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers last night. New Orleans was led by Jared Harper who had 20 points, while John Petty Junior had 16 points. The Pelicans will take on the Thunder tomorrow night at 5 PM.

LSU football has picked up its first commitment from an offensive lineman for the Class of 2023. It comes from three-star prospect Paul Mubenga from Buford, Georgia. LSU’s 2023 class has 16 verbal commitments, including four from Georgia.

Louisiana Tech football has received a four-star commitment from a quarterback in Mississippi. Vic Sutton is six-foot-three, 200 pounds and also received offers from Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Memphis. He’s entering his senior season at Madison Central after throwing 17 touchdown passes and three interceptions as a junior. He is recovering from a torn A-C-L in the playoffs.

Australian Cameron Smith is the leader as third round of the British Open is underway. He’s at 13-under par. American Cameron Young is two shots back.

The three-day major league baseball draft gets underway Sunday and LSU Baseball Coach Jay Johnson is hopeful some of his top recruiting prospects will not be swayed by the money and decide to play professional baseball instead of coming to college. Johnson says he’s made his best recruiting pitch to his signees that playing at LSU is better for their development….

Eight of LSU’s signees could be selected in the first two rounds based on M-L-B’s Top 200 prospect list.

Also the NCAA Baseball Rules committee has proposes that conferences can determine if a runner should be put on second base in extra innings, also no more celebratory props, like the boom box LSU had.

LSU football received its 12th commitment in the last 14 days. It comes from three-star offensive lineman Paul Mubenga from Buford, Georgia. Mubenga is the first offensive lineman in LSU’s 2023 class which now has 16 verbal commitments, including four from Georgia.

After catching 45 passes his freshman season, Boutte played in six games last year and caught nine touchdown passes before suferring a season-ending ankle injury.

Sean Payton head coaching rumors are starting to swirl again. Payton is expected to be a part of Fox’s broadcasting crew this season, but in 2023, Payton would be interested in being the head coach in Miami, Dallas or for the Los Angeles Chargers. That’s according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Jackson’s report says Payton wants to coach in warm weather and with a roster that can compete immediately.

Louisiana Tech baseball has officially added two transfers, pitcher Rawley Hector from Texas A-and-M. Hector appeared in nine games last season for the Aggies. Also heading to Ruston is former Barbe star and LSU outfielder Brody Drost. Drost was named the 2020 Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year but only hit .226 in two seasons at LSU. Also, former LSU pitcher Jacob Hasty has reportedly transferred to Missouri.

The original “Voice of the Cajuns” Ron Gomez has passed away at the age of 87. Gomez called games for the Cajuns from 1961 to 1979 and then went into the state legislature and got behind legislation that led to the construction of the Cajundome.

The Pelicans defeated the Washington Wizards 106-88 in NBA Summer League Action last night. Jared Harper who played in the G-League last season, had 18 points and six assists. New Orleans is 2-1 in Las Vegas and will play the Lakers tomorrow night.

The two Texas schools planned to play in the WAC this season, but recently decided they’ll compete in the Southland instead. U-I-W won the Southland last season and they’ll begin the conference play by visiting Southeastern on September 24th. That weekend Northwestern State will host Lamar.

The Pelicans have another summer league game tonight against the Washington Wizards and hopefully no one else will get hurt. The team announced that second round pick E-J Liddell will be out indefinitely after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee during a Summer League game on Monday night.

LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson got some good news today as signee Paxton Kling announced he’s removing his name from the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft which means he’s heading to Baton Rouge to play for the Purple ad Gold. The outfielder is the Gatorade Player of the Year in Pennsylvania and considered a Top 50 MLB Prospect.
