Southeastern Louisiana completed a four-game sweep of Lafayette by beating the Lions 11 to four yesterday. The Ragin Cajuns missed out on sweeping Rice as the Owls salvaged a game in the series with a 12 to eight win. ULM took two of three from Bradley. The Warhawks won eight to four yesterday as Chipper Menard from Houma threw six strong innings.

The top ranked LSU baseball team started its season with a dominating 10-0 win over Western Michigan on cold and windy Friday at Alex Box Stadium. Big right-hander Paul Skenes struck out 12 and allowed just three hits in his LSU debut. Freshman designated hitter Jared Jones had a two-run double and Ben Nippolt drove in two runs as well.

Rough start to the season for Louisiana Tech as B-Y-U blew out the Bulldogs 10 to 1. Jonathan Fincher gave up three runs in four innings and suffered the loss. Ryan Harland and Jacob Havern did not have good outings out of the bullpen.

Heath Hood’s two-run homer in the eighth inning powered the Cajuns to a five-to-four win over Rice. ULM blanked Bradley seven to nothing as Cam Barlow struck out seven in five innings. Kade Dupont had three hits. Mcneese shutout Creighton 1-to-0 and Nicholls blanked Lindenwood 4-0.

In NFL news….Free agent quarterback Derek Carr will reportedly meet with the Jets this weekend. Carr previously visited with the Saints, before he was released by the Raiders. There’s speculation the Jets are also interested in Aaron Rodgers if he wants out of Green Bay.

Louisiana Tech is expected to make a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The bulldogs open the season tonight against BYU. The Bulldogs won 43 games last year and return preseason Conference USA Pitcher of the Year Jonathan Fincher and center fielder Cole McConnell, who drove in a school record 76 runs last season.

After the game, Coach Talvin Hester confirmed reports that Cobe Williams, who is averaging 19 points a game has left the team. And Northwestern State won its ninth straight as the Demons defeated Southeastern 81=76.

The LSU Baseball season opens today against Western Michigan. The Tigers have dominated the preseason polls as the number one-ranked team in the country under second-year Head Coach Jay Johnson. LSU had both the top-ranked recruiting class and transfer class in the nation this off-season along with a strong roster of returning players. Junior first baseman Tre Morgan has been a star for the Tigers since arriving in Baton Rouge and has noticed a shift in the locker room ahead of this season. He says the team isn’t running from the expectations…:

Saints running back Alvin Kamara has reportedly been indicted by a grand jury stemming from a 2021 Pro Bowl weekend assault in Las Vegas.

The Northwestern State men’s basketball team has now won 9 straight following last night’s 81-76 victory over Southeastern in Southland Conference play. Center Isaac Haney had a career-high 23 points in the game.

The UL-Lafayette men’s basketball team picked up an 84-67 victory over ULM last night. The Ragin Cajuns visit James Madison Saturday, while The Warhawks head to South Alabama.

The Nicholls State men’s basketball team came up short in a close 78-74 loss to Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Louisiana Tech Guard, the leading scorer for the Bulldogs, is reportedly no longer with the team. The official reason is “personal issues.” Tech dropped its third straight Thursday night with a 72-62 loss to North Texas.

McNeese played a close game and came away winners in a 78-76 overtime victory over Incarnate Word.

Angel Reese scored a career high 36 points as No. 5 LSU women’s hoops prevailed over Ole Miss at home, 69-60. The Tigers are now 24-1 overall and 12-1 in the SEC.

The Pelicans head into the All-Star Break with a 30-29 record after losing to the Lakers last night 120 to 102. New Orleans allowed 38 points in the first quarter and never got back into the contest. The Pels find themselves in eighth place in the Western Conference just a game ahead of Oklahoma City for the final spot in the play-in tournament. New Orleans next game is a week from tonight in Toronto.

Louisiana Tech basketball returns to action tonight against North Texas who is currently second in the Conference USA. The Bulldogs have a 6-8 conference record, but 7 of those losses have been by 7 points or less. Coach Talvin Hester says his young team has bought into the system but is going through some growing pains…

The LSU Board of Supervisors voted last week to add Sue Gunter’s name to the court in the P-MAC along with dale Brown’s despite pleas from Brown supporters who believe it takes away an honor given to Brown. Longtime assistant coach for both Brown and Gunter Bob Starkey says Brown’s accomplishments are undeniable, but Gunter did a lot with fewer resources than the men’s program…

Saints head coach Dennis Allen announced the hiring of five new coaches including new defensive coordinator Joe Woods. Woods has spent the last 19 years as an NFL Coach and most recently as the DC for the Browns for the last three seasons.

LSU Women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey was named as a candidate on the Naismith Coach of the Year late season watchlist. Mulkey has led the Tigers to a 23-1 record with only four games remaining in her second season at LSU. Mulkey won AP Coach of the year after a 26-6 campaign during her first season in Baton Rouge and has led a team with nine new players and only one returning member of last year’s squad who played significant minutes. Mulkey joins a watch list of 50 coaches that will be cut down to ten and then four before the coach of the year is announced in late March.

The Pelicans return to action tonight as they visit the Lakers. The Pels are currently seventh in the West fighting to make it out of the play-in tournament with only one game separating them from the fifth-place Clippers. LA on the other hand is looking to turn their season around and make a push for the play-ins after some key trade-deadline moves. Currently 13th in the conference, they’ll be without Lebron James tonight and former Pelican Anthony Davis is probable for the contest but has been struggling with injuries.  New Orleans will be without Zion Williamson and Dyson Daniels and the Lakers are 5-point home favorites. Tip-off in the Staples Center is at 9:00.
