The Pels find themselves in eighth place in the Western Conference just a game ahead of Oklahoma City for the final spot in the play-in tournament. New Orleans next game is a week from tonight in Toronto.

The fifth ranked Lady Tigers return to the floor tonight for the first time since losing South Carolina as LSU hosts Ole Miss at 8 PM in the Maravich Center. The Rebels are 20-5 overall, 9-3 in the SEC. LSU Coach Kim Mulkey says this is a good team coming into the PMAC…

The Cajuns and Warhawks meet on the hardwood in Lafayette tonight as both teams are looking to snap losing streaks. U-L Lafayette has lost two in a row, while ULM has lost three straight. The Cajuns beat the Warhawks earlier this year by 13 in a game played in Monroe.

Louisiana Tech basketball returns to action tonight against North Texas who is currently second in the Conference USA. The Bulldogs have a 6-8 conference record, but 7 of those losses have been by 7 points or less. Coach Talvin Hester says his young team has bought into the system but is going through some growing pains…

The LSU Board of Supervisors voted last week to add Sue Gunter’s name to the court in the P-MAC along with dale Brown’s despite pleas from Brown supporters who believe it takes away an honor given to Brown. Longtime assistant coach for both Brown and Gunter Bob Starkey says Brown’s accomplishments are undeniable, but Gunter did a lot with fewer resources than the men’s program…

Saints head coach Dennis Allen announced the hiring of five new coaches including new defensive coordinator Joe Woods. Woods has spent the last 19 years as an NFL Coach and most recently as the DC for the Browns for the last three seasons.

LSU Women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey was named as a candidate on the Naismith Coach of the Year late season watchlist. Mulkey has led the Tigers to a 23-1 record with only four games remaining in her second season at LSU. Mulkey won AP Coach of the year after a 26-6 campaign during her first season in Baton Rouge and has led a team with nine new players and only one returning member of last year’s squad who played significant minutes. Mulkey joins a watch list of 50 coaches that will be cut down to ten and then four before the coach of the year is announced in late March.

The Pelicans return to action tonight as they visit the Lakers. The Pels are currently seventh in the West fighting to make it out of the play-in tournament with only one game separating them from the fifth-place Clippers. LA on the other hand is looking to turn their season around and make a push for the play-ins after some key trade-deadline moves. Currently 13th in the conference, they’ll be without Lebron James tonight and former Pelican Anthony Davis is probable for the contest but has been struggling with injuries.  New Orleans will be without Zion Williamson and Dyson Daniels and the Lakers are 5-point home favorites. Tip-off in the Staples Center is at 9:00.

The losing streak for the LSU men’s basketball team is up to 13 after losing at Georgia 65 to 63 last night. The Bulldogs scored the winning bucket with a layup with five seconds left. KJ Williams was the only LSU Tiger in double figures as he had 18 points and nine rebounds. The Tigers had 19 turnovers.

The Pelicans are in L-A tonight to face the Lakers in the final game before the All-Star Break. C-J McCollum is questionable for the Pels with a right ankle sprain. Lebron James is also questionable with an ankle sprain media reports indicate he’s expected to play. New Orleans enters the game with a 30-28 and in seventh place in the Western Conference. L-A is 26-and-32.

The Derek Carr sweepstakes are officially underway as the Raiders have released the four-time Pro Bowl Q-B after nine seasons with the franchise. The Saints, Panthers, Titans and Jets are potential landing spots. The Saints are reportedly 59-million dollars over the 2023 salary cap, but could save some money by releasing Michael Thomas, Jameis Winston and Andrus Peat.

Just two days to go before the start of the college baseball season and six-foot-six right-hander Paul Skenes is expected to get the start when top ranked LSU opens the season against Western Michigan. Skenes was at Air Force the last two seasons. Last year, he recorded a 2.96 ERA and had 96 strikeouts. Skenes believes learning from LSU pitching coach Wes Johnson will only make him better…

The LSU men’s basketball team nearly ended its 12-game losing streak, but instead it’s up to 13 after losing 65-63 at Georgia. The Tigers had several chances to take the lead in the final two minutes but couldn’t get the job done. K-J Williams had 18 points and nine boards in a losing effort.

Longtime assistant basketball coach Bob Starkey says the late Sue Gunter would be proud but also embarrassed about her name joining Dale Brown’s on the court in the Maravich Center. Starkey was an assistant coach for both Brown and Gunter and knew Gunter before he arrived at LSU in 1990…

After nine seasons with the Raiders, Las Vegas has released quarterback Derek Carr allowing teams who need a signal caller to sign the 31-year-old immediately. Carr was 63-and-79 as a starter with the Raiders and is coming off of one of his worst seasons as a pro. But the Saints and several other teams are interested in signing Carr.

The Ragin Cajuns are picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt and they have one of the top players in the league in center fielder Carson Roccaforte. Coach Matt Deggs expects Roccaforte to have another great season, but he’s looking for others to step up….

The Raiders released quarterback Derek Carr today. The New Orleans Saints have already shown interest in Carr as they had him in for a visit last week. The Jets, Panthers and Titans are also reportedly interested in Carr, who is expected to take his time in making a decision. He spent nine seasons with the Raiders, last season he threw for 35-hundred yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, the third highest interception rate in the NFL.

NFL analyst Mike Detillier says besides finding a new starting quarterback, the Black and Gold will also need to rebuild their offensive and defensive lines, especially at defensive tackle…

Former All-Pro offensive lineman Conrad Dobler has died at the age of 72. Dobler was known as one of the NFL’s dirties players. He played for the Saints for two seasons in New Orleans 1978 and 1979. The 79 team finished eight and eight, the first non-losing season in franchise history.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champs for a second time in four years as K-C was outstanding in the second half in the 38-35 win over the Eagles. Mahomes threw two TD passes in the fourth quarter and his 26 yard run set up the game winning field goal. Former Minden and La Tech star L’Jarius Sneed had seven tackles and two passes defensed for the Chiefs. The Super Bowl is in Las Vegas next year and then New Orleans in 2025.

The Kansas City Chiefs are NFL champs for the second time in four seasons after beating the Eagles 38-35 in last night’s Super Bowl. K-C cornerback L’Jarius Sneed will get a second Super Bowl ring as the former Minden and La Tech star had seven tackles and two passes defensed.

The NFL Network’s Ian Raporport reports the Raiders will release quarterback Derek Carr, because he will not accept a trade to the Saints or anyone else. Carr met with the Saints last week and if he gets released, he’ll become one of the top free agents on the market.

Bad news for the Pelicans as All-Star forward Zion Williamson will miss several more weeks after he re-aggravated his right hamstring. Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin says Williamson was set to return soon, but re-injured himself at practice…
