Wind Chill Advisories and Freeze Warnings are out; Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings are in. That’s the new terminology that the National Weather Service is using from now on. Lead Meteorologist Danielle Manning says the thresholds depend on where in the state you’re at.

The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of a new $3 million training facility designed to benefit law enforcement agencies across Louisiana. St.  Major Ginny Higgins emphasized that the facility aims to provide critical training—much of it at no cost—for agencies that cannot afford similar resources.

A 30-year-old Lafayette man is facing charges for killing a black bear in Concordia Parish. Wildlife and Fisheries Lt. Chad Watts says over the Thanksgiving weekend Christopher Buck, a convicted felon, was booked into jail because he was in possession of a shotgun on the Richard Yancey Wildlife Management Area. Last Sunday a dead black bear was found at that same W-M-A, so investigators went back and spoke to Buck

Public school enrollment has fallen to its lowest level in two decades. Based on the latest data from the state department of education, there are just under 677-thousand students who attend public schools in Louisiana. Nearly 90-percent of school districts have fewer students this year than last. An increase in home schooling and a decline in the state’s overall population are the major reasons for a drop-in public-school students.

After nearly two decades of declining enrollment UNO is planning to consolidate its five degree granting colleges into two in order to cut administrative costs. The university has already made significant cuts this year and hope to save two million dollars per year with the consolidation which will eliminate 2 Vice President positions. The University of Louisiana System Board approved the plan in an effort to help solve UNO’s budget crisis.

Landry, however, did not get the broadening of the sales tax base he had asked for. Instead, lawmakers boosted the state sales tax rate to five-percent to compensate for the reduction in income tax revenue. The changes take effect January 1st.
