A civil district court judge in New Orleans denies a petition from the estranged heirs of Saints and Pelicans Owner Tom Benson that claimed the 87-year-old is mentally unfit to run his professional sports teams. It’s a victory for Benson. But Legal analyst Tim Meche says the real court battle is over Benson’s trust funds, and whether he can get them changed so that his wife Gayle can assume ownership of the teams when he dies…:

The 1st Circuit Court of Appeal agrees that Governor Bobby Jindal can’t do away with testing contracts tied to the controversial Common Core Education Standards. Jindal suspended the contracts last year saying they weren’t properly procured but a district judge lifted the suspension and this week the appeals court upheld that ruling.

US Treasury Department announces a woman will soon grace the face of the 10 dollar bill. Director of the LSU Women’s Center Summer Steib (Stibe) says there are women on coins…:

A man on death row for the 1993 killing an off-duty Baton Rouge Police officer, has been barred from execution by the US Supreme Court, because of his mental disability. Kevan Brumfield was convicted in the shooting death of Cpl. Betty Smothers. Legal analyst Tim Meche says this case will head back to lower courts for hearings…

And, as a result of the 5-4 decision from the high court, he says this may cause many convictions in Louisiana to be re-evaluated.

Governor Bobby Jindal has lost an appeal of his Common Core lawsuit, that would allow the suspension on the testing contracts of the curriculum. A three judge panel called the move by Jindal “unconstitutional interference.” Parents and educators sued, and the testing still took place this past spring. Jindal says he will appeal.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says a man is dead after falling off of a barge at a recycling center in Gibson. They say 44-year-old James Patrick Lafleur of Morgan City was a welder on the platform barge when he fell nearly 60 feet to the barge’s base. Lafleur was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Governor Bobby Jindal announced today that Netchex will be building a new headquarters facility in Mandeville investing $5.3 million to lease the space for 2 years followed by the completion of a new building. The expansion retains 86 jobs and creates 240 new direct jobs with an average salary of $43,800 plus benefits.

Kevan Brumfield was convicted in the shooting death of Cpl. Betty Smothers, the mother of former NFL star Warrick Dunn. Legal analyst Tim Meche on the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling…:

Meche points out that Brumfield has been going to court for 20 years and this ruling could drag matters out for another five to seven years.

Officials are asking for the public’s input on who the woman should be.

Vacationers should expect delays if headed to the beach or in and out of New Orleans to and from the Northshore starting tomorrow due to construction in the I-10 and I-12 near I-59 area in St. Tammany Parish. DOTD says at least one lane of traffic will remain open at all times but they are strongly encouraging drivers to take US 90 as an alternate route.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is asking FEMA to give homeowners impacted by Red River floodwaters in northwest and central Louisiana more time to file a claim. The National Flood Insurance Program requires homeowners to file within 60 days of a flood but Donelon says many will need longer than that to collect the forms they need.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office reports a 26-year-old A.A.U. basketball coach is under arrest for allegedly sending explicit pictures and text messages to a female juvenile. The victim’s family contacted deputies and after an investigation they booked Adrian Steib Jr. on charges of computer aided solicitation of a minor and indecent behavior with a juvenile.

There’s a bill on Governor Bobby Jindal’s desk which would put into law a provision allowing cops equipment on patrol cars to scan someone’s license plate as a way to catch uninsured motorists.

Pete Adams, executive director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, says the photo of the license plate will only be used to catch uninsured motorists, track down stolen vehicles and help authorities in emergency situations.

Education Superintendent John White receives a positive job review from the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, despite a politically tough year. White received a score of 3.3 out of four, but pointed out in a tweet that he scored lower in kindergarten readiness. BESE president Chas Roemer says the state has taken steps to make sure pre-k education is more accessible…

Amite Police say a Roseland man is under arrest accused of killing his neighbor Wednesday. They say 39-year-old Jermaine Williams and 27-year-old Joshua Lee were having an argument when Williams pulled a gun and shot Lee five times. Williams also allegedly shot at Lee’s girlfriend. Williams is charged with second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. Authorities believe an ongoing feud between the men led to the incident.
