The Edwards administration had to address 2 mid-year budget shortfalls last year, but a higher than expected increase in sales tax and personal income tax gathered by the state helped make a 143 million dollar surplus. But the governor says the state’s constitution limits how the surplus money can be used.

An off duty Slidell Police Lieutenant died last night in a motorcycle crash on Brown-Switch Road. Trooper Dustin Dwight says that 29 year old Gina Marie (GROW-GLEE-OH) Groglio of Pearl River was making a left turn into a private drive when she hit the motorcycle driven by 52 year old Ray Dupuy.

Data from the USDA shows Louisiana is the second hungriest state in the nation. “Bread for the World” President David Beckmann says the hunger problem in the state is concentrated among African Americans where about 1 out of 3 families may run out of food for the month…:

Beckmann said there are several ways to turn this trend around by funding programs to support people struggling in poverty.

It’s Louisiana Craft Brewers Week and the Executive Director of the Louisiana Craft Brewers Guild Cary (COKE) Koch wants you to know it! Koch says that establishments throughout the state are opening up their taps and shelves to provide locally made beers from over 30 Louisiana based breweries and brew pubs. Koch says these brewers favor using as many as Louisiana products as possible.

Good state budget news has been hard to find, but we found some. Governor John Bel Edwards says the state ended up with a 143-million dollar surplus for the fiscal year that ended June 30th. Edwards says it’s a sign Louisiana’s economy is improving….

Economists say a higher than anticipated increase in personal income and sales tax collections created the surplus. House Speaker Taylor Barras (BAR-rah) says the surplus should go towards refilling the Rainy Day Fund. Legislators took 99-million dollars from the fund last fiscal year.
Lake Charles and Alexandria are among the fastest growing economies in the country according to U-S Commerce Department. But on the flip slide, Houma and Lafayette are among the fastest shrinking economies because of the downturn in the oil and gas industry.

Sad story out of Livingston Parish, a five-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle after leaving an ice cream truck. Denham Springs Police spokesperson Amber Fairburn says the driver indicated he did not see the child…

As of now, no charges have been filed against the driver.

A new report from the USDA finds there are over 41 million Americans, including 13 million children, who lived at risk of hunger in 2016. Bread for the World, a movement to end hunger in the US, broke the numbers down by state, and found that Louisiana is the second hungriest in the nation. President David Beckmann says this should be a wake-up call…:

A tragic story from Denham Springs.  Police say a 5 year old child was run over and died in the street moments after leaving from an ice cream truck.  Amber Fairburn with the Denham Springs PD said officers were dispatched Wednesday evening….

“Bread For The World” President David Beckman is concerned about a new USDA report that ranks Louisiana as number 2 in the hungriest states in the US.  Beckman said there are several ways to reverse this trend such as maintaining funding for Medicaid, SNAP, and provide tax credits for low income families.

There’s some rare good budget news from the state. Governor John Bel Edwards announced Louisiana has about a $143 million dollar surplus from last fiscal year, but that doesn’t mean the money woes are over. Edwards says they are limited with what they can do with the extra dollars:

Governor John Bel Edwards confirmed on his monthly call in radio show that Amazon is set to build a distribution center at a yet-to-be-determined location in Louisiana. He says once it comes online, it will be great, not only for the state, but for brick and mortar retailers as well…:

He says negotiations are still underway as to which site will be selected.

The Governor and First Lady Donna Edwards this morning announced the No Kid Hungry Louisiana initiative and School Breakfast Challenge to help reduce childhood hunger in the state. They say this will raise awareness of a serious hunger problem in the state, and engage the public and lawmakers. The USDA reported in 2014 that over 200,000 children continue to suffer from childhood hunger in Louisiana.

Louisiana Tech University has set an enrollment record for this fall as nearly 13-thousand students are taking classes. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says Louisiana ended last year with a $100 million dollar surplus, but that is not going to alleviate the next budget gap. He said the state collected more money that projected from taxes in the budget year that ended June 30th. But he said it’s not going to help with the $1 billion dollar gap next year, when temporary taxes expire.

Louisiana is among about a dozen states where chronic teacher absenteeism in traditional public schools is at least twice as high as it is in charter schools, according to the Thomas B. Fordham Institute. But Louisiana Federation of Teachers spokesperson Les Landon says the report also claims collective bargaining agreements lead to an increase in teacher absences..:
