Arizona Senator John McCain has announced he opposes the health care bill that’s co-authored by Louisiana’s senior senator Bill Cassidy. In a statement, McCain says we could do better working together, Republicans and Democrats. D-C observers say McCain’s opposition is a significant setback in Cassidy’s efforts to get the legislation passed this month.

A Breaux Bridge police officer is facing allegations of sexual misconduct with a juvenile. Twenty-nine-year-old Craig David has been charged with carnal knowledge of juvenile, computer aided solicitation of a minor and malfeasance. Master State Trooper Brooks David says it’s a shame when LSP has to arrest someone sworn to protect the public…

A Grambling State student is recovering after he was shot in the arm by another man and the search for the shooter is ongoing. A university spokesperson says the shooting occurred last night when a student let a man in his dorm, an agrument ensued and the student was shot in the left arm. LSU officials say some Greek activities can resume on Sunday. President F King Alexander announced a suspension of all Greek activities following the death of Maxwell Gruver, who died in a possible hazing incident. The suspension includes no tailgating tomorrow in groups of ten or more involving Greek organizations. Starting Sunday, chapter, pilanthropic and alumni activies can resume.

The state transportation department says the major I-20 overlay project in Webster Parish is running ahead of schedule and could be completed around Thanksgiving. Once the weather cools down, pumpkin spice becomes more popular. An out of state researcher says pumpkin spice can be addictive. LSU Hew New Orleans psychologist, Doctor Michelle Moore, says the other phenomenon is that pumpkin spice is very trendy….

New Orleans-based Glo airlines is done flying. A federal bankruptcy judge says the startup airline must sell everything it owns to pay its bills. Glo had flights from New Orleans to Shreveport, plus service to Little Rock, Memphis and Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Positive state budget news has been difficult to find lately, but at least one recent financial fact is encouraging. Governor John Bel Edwards says Louisiana had a 143-million dollar surplus for the fiscal year that ended June 30th.  Edwards thinks it’s a sign the state’s economy is improving.

“Bread For The World” President David Beckman is concerned about a new USDA report. His group analyzed it and they rank Louisiana as number 2 in the hungriest states in the United States.  Beckman said there are ways to reverse the trend that can include funding for SNAP, Medicaid and giving tax credits for low income families.
