A Baton Rouge man, Raheem Howard, has been cleared of charges after an officer accused him of attempted murder during a traffic stop. Matt Doyle has the story.

Tropical Storm Gordon will likely not have any long lasting effects on the state.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says Louisiana was spared by  Gordon due to two factors. As Gordon came ashore, it was further east in the cone of uncertainty, and it wasn’t as fierce as some had projected the storm to be.

Farm Bill hearings continued today on Capitol Hill, with Republicans pushing for major reforms to food stamp eligibility. North Louisiana Congressman Ralph Abraham says they’re looking to implement work mandates or 20 hour a week volunteer, and educational requirements. Abraham says employers are desperate for labor, and this is a good step towards pushing the unemployed into the workforce.

LSU’s impressive win over Miami and big move up the rankings has resulted in an increase sales for LSU merchandise. Owner of Purple and Gold Sports shop Pat Randazza says winning on the football field always brings in more foot traffic into their store

For the coastal areas of Louisiana, Tropical Storm Gordon is now in the books with very little effect on the region.  The storm made landfall last night near the Alabama-Mississippi line.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says when it comes to monitoring the weather, better safe than sorry.

Senator John Kennedy had a front row seat to the Judiciary Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Judge Brett Kavanagh that got a bit rowdy between the protesters and Democrats on the committee who excoriated their colleagues to refusing to release what they say are key documents about the judge. Kennedy waded in, saying the judicial selection process wasn’t the place for these kinds of fights. the Senator says in due time the Judge’s record will be scrutinized.

Protesters, frequently vocally interrupted the proceedings, and at one point the father of a Parkland High shooting victim approached Kavanaugh, but his handshake was rejected.

Louisiana did not see any impacts as Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall last night near the Alabama-Mississippi line. Gordon weakened to a depression over central Mississippi and it’s moving northwest at 14 miles per hour. The center of Gordon is expected to move just north of northeast Lousiaina.

Eyes across the Bayou State continue to monitor the impact of Gordon.  National Weather Service Meteorologist Eric Carpenter says with Gordon’s move inland, the storm should slow down as northern portions of the state feels the impact of rain. Carpenter says the amount of rain to brace for depends on where the storm happens to finally stall.

LSU Health New Orleans is joining an international study that’s showing positive results in the search for alternatives to knee replacement for those who suffer chronic pain. They’re the first US based organization to join the study. Associate Professor Vinod Dasa says the CartiHeal system cores out the arthritic regions of the knee, and then begins the process of regrowth.

LSU Health New Orleans has enrolled two patients suffering from chronic knee pain who are getting a new treatment that will regrow cartilage instead of undergoing a knee replacement surgery….

That’s Principle Investigator Doctor Vinod Dasa, who says patients receive a single implant through a minimally invasive surgery and 80 patients worldwide have been enrolled in the trial.

LSU will no longer automatically reject an applicant just because of a low score on the ACT or SAT. The flagship university will also look at recommendation letters, personal essays and the applicant’s activities outside of school. LSU vice president and executive director of policy, Jason Droddy, says standardized test scores are not a true indicator of college success.

Governor Billy Nungesser, along with state tourism officials, chefs and local convention and visitor bureau leaders are in China for a 10-day trip where they will meet with Chinese officials and tour operators. Nungesser says China is the one of the largest tourist markets for the United States, so he’s hoping a personal trip will lead to more visitors to Louisiana.

Tropical Storm Gordon looks more like a problem for Mississippi and Alabama, as the storm is expected to make landfall late tonight on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  As of the 4PM NHC advisory, Gordon is sitting 90 miles south of Mobile, with max sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. Danielle Manning, with the National Weather Service in Slidell, says Gordon is expected to move through Mississippi tomorrow and enter northeast Louisiana as a tropical depression by night fall

Despite weakening projections, 200 Louisiana National Guardsmen have been activated in southeast Louisiana. General Glenn Curtis says they are ready to assist if water rescues are necessary…

A contractor accused of ripping off customers across five parishes after the 2016 flood receives a four-year prison sentence and is forced to repay 84-thousand dollars to 11 Livingston Parish victims. 41-year-old Matthew Morris was indicted on 51 counts, but ended up pleading guilty to only one. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says the state got what it needed to out of the case.

Pineville Police Chief Don Weatherford says he’s disappointed with Sergeant Edric Smith who was arrested on a battery charge for an incident that happened during a youth softball game on the University of Louisiana at Monroe campus. Smith allegedly attacked an umpire, punching the official three times in the face. The 45-year-old sergeant was released on a one-thousand dollar bond.
