With football season underway, how fans celebrate the sport is seeing a shift in trends. Whether tailgating at the stadium or having a party at home, fans are stepping up their game. CEO of FUEL Partnerships, a retail marketing agency, Eric Rosenstrauch, says just your standard chips and dip isn’t quite cutting it anymore.

Rosenstrauch says when it comes to the grill, you may see more effort than just hamburgers and hot dogs.

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday kicks off today, but the savings won’t be as substantial as in years past. That’s due to the legislature’s decision to end state sales tax holidays in the final budget compromise from the special session. But local sales tax exemptions are still in effect. Local Sales Tax Board Executive Director Roger Bergeron says that’s because it the legislature may have just forgotten.

Several legislators have gone on record stating the elimination of sales tax holidays for school supplies, hurricane preparedness, and the 2nd amendment holiday was not intentional, but an oversight.
Early estimates show local school boards and governments may lose 500,000 dollars in tax revenue due to the local sales tax exemption being maintained. Bergeron says this could lead to some customers either under, or over estimating their savings this weekend.

Local gun stores have expressed frustration with the move that they say will put a damper on one of their most important days of the year.
The state’s 4.45 percent sales tax will remain in effect, but Bergeron says the often notable difference in local tax rates won’t matter this weekend.

The sales tax holiday covers guns, ammo, and hunter supplies.

Bullying is a widespread issue, and in a recent study by WalletHub, Louisiana has ranked the number one state for bullying problems. The website compared 47 states and DC across 20 key metrics. Louisiana Department of Education spokesperson Sydni Dunn says bullying is something that is taken seriously in the Bayou State.

Among the study results, Louisiana ranked number one in several categories, including high school students involved in fights, cyber bullying, and suicide attempts. Dunn says school safety and violence prevention is something that is not taken lightly.

The state has tracked bullying incidents since the 2011-2012 school year, with 3,728 cases in the first year. It has trended downward since with 2016-17 seeing 1046 cases. Dunn says tools for how to deal with bullying are listed on the department’s website and says the message is clear.

The back of a Mandeville synagogue was covered swastikas and other Nazi symbols and messages that were discovered Wednesday morning. The phrase “Synagogue of Satan” and “burn” were clearly displayed on the Northshore Jewish Congregation’s walls, along with white supremacist code numbers. Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker says they’re on the hunt for the perpetrators.

The act has received condemnation from religious and anti-racism organizations across the state, including the Anti-Defamation League and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Sticker says once you see the picture of the graffiti, it becomes pretty clear what this was…

The act occurred while schools were out in the area for Tropical Storm Gordon. Sticker says they’re looking for information from the public, because the time frame when it could have occurred was so wide.
