Constitutional Amendment 2 has passed, so beginning with arrests in 2019 an unanimous jury decision will be needed for a conviction in felony cases, instead of the current standard of 10 of 12 jurors.  Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says Louisiana will join nearly every other state in how felony convictions are handled.

Ciolino says Amendment 2 would not affect juries for offenses that were committed before the New Year.

Ciolino there will still be trials that will take place under the old system after Amendment 2 becomes law.

The Democrats have retaken the House, leaving Congress split after Republicans maintained their majority in the Senate. That could mean new opportunities for Louisiana officials like Democrat Congressman Cedric Richmond, who political analyst Clancy DuBos says could be in line for a promotion.

And someone faced with a very different set of questions, Republican House Whip Steve Scalise, could decide to chase a new race. Scalise was reportedly eying a run at Speaker, but with the GOP on the outs there, DuBos says Scalise could be on his way home for the 2019 governor’s race, if he can break a promise to not leave Washington.

And with that newfound power in DC, DuBos says he expects Democrats be open the flood gates on a series of investigations targeting the President and his supporters, who until now have been shielded from that Congress.

Representative Garret Graves successfully clenched his re-election for the 6^th Congressional District seat.  Now that he’s off the campaign trail and headed back to work in DC, the South Louisiana congressman says he’s got already got a plan as to what he is working on next.

Graves says he’s looking forward to working with those across the aisle to best represent the American people.

Representative Mike Johnson also successfully secured his re-election for the 4^th Congressional District. Johnson says he is also in a race to be the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, the largest caucus of Republicans in the Congress, and that decision will be made later this month.

Johnson says the Dems taking of the House is a bit concerning, but is hoping for the ability to work together to continue to move the ball forward for the American people.

Fantasy sports fans are asking what’s next now that several parishes have legalized online fantasy sports betting, and the only answer we do have is: you’ll have to wait until next year to find out. Public Affairs Research Council President Robert Scott says now its up to the legislature to fill in the details for parishes that voted yes.

Online fantasy sports allow gamers to pay to compete with each other to see who can pick the athletes in a certain sport who will have the best performance that week.

The biggest question is how, or if the state will squeeze the newly legal activity for cash. Scott says the legislature has not tipped its hand on just how it would look at the revenue side of the issue.

But for those living in parishes that voted no, there’s another question all together: how do you prevent them from accessing the online game? The two major companies, FanDuel and DraftKings, say they can lock certain players out depending on their location, but Scott says it’s likely not that easy as people travel from parish to parish.

So far the only controversy on this election day is the lack of “I voted stickers.” Several people who voted today went on social media expressing their disappointment they didn’t receive n “I voted” sticker. A spokesperson for the Secretary of State’s office blames budgetary constraints. While one of the candidates in the Secretary of State’s race is using the hashtag Make Stickers Available Again.

UL Lafayette Poli Sci Professor Pearson Cross says Louisiana voters will have one, major chance to reshape their state with a hugely consequential amendment choice, the number two amendment option. That’s the one that would require unanimous jury verdicts in felony cases. Cross says indications of higher turnout bode well for the historic change.

National pollsters are predicting a tight race for Congress today, giving Democrats a slight edge to retake the lower chamber, but next to no chance to gain control of the Senate. Democrats are cautious, but confident of their chances in the House, and Congressman Cedric Richmond says that’s due to a strong pro-working class message.

Democrats say the 1.6 trillion dollar tax bill that slashed upper income and corporate tax rates is helping their case today, But Republicans are all in on their tax cut, saying it’s helped revitalize the economy and hope voters will reward the party with another two years of federal dominance. Congressman Ralph Abraham predicts the economy’s recent growth will lead to a narrow majority for the House GOP.
