Crawfish producers are hoping researchers can do something that’s a growing problem in their industry and that’s the white spot syndrome that kill off large crawfish in their ponds. LSU Aquaculture specialist, Doctor Greg Lutz, says they need more research dollars in order to examine what’s causing white spot disease…

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, a celebration of local business that’s sandwiched in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. State director of the National Federation of Independent Business, Dawn Starns says if you spend local, that money tends to stay local.

Lutz says all it takes is for one crawfish to get white spot syndrome and all of the mudbugs in a pond can get sick. He says for some producers it’s been a real issue…

State Police say a 13-year-old was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver in Calcasieu Parish on Thanksgiving morning. 13-year-old Kyrin Pete of Lake Charles was walking on the shoulder of the highway with two others when a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Jake Ryan Hebert of Lafayette hit him. Hebert has been charged with vehicular homicide and DWI.

Many are on the hunt for the best toys as the holiday shopping season is underway. There is not a spotlight toy grabbing headlines this year like the Furby or Tickle Me Elmo, but there is still no shortage of fun items. Known as the Toy Guy, Chris Byrne, says when it comes to video games, the system to grab this year is the Nintendo Switch.

It’s a topic of conversation that pops up every Thanksgiving… the story that tryptophan in turkey harnesses the power to induce sleepiness, but clinical dietitian Grace Mansfield says the legend of the bird is a myth.  Many other portions of the meal also have tryptophan such as pumpkin, cheese, and milk.  But what is it that makes diners want to take a nap?  Mansfield says that is because people tend to overindulge for the holiday feast.

It’s Diabetes Awareness month, a time for experts to help raise awareness of the dangerous condition that threatens 15 percent of the adult Louisiana population.  It was the 7^th leading cause of death in America in 2015, killing 79,535 people directly, with 252,806 thousand death certificates labeling it as a contributing cause. McIver says if you have higher than average blood glucose, you may be pre-diabetic, in which case you need to seek help.

Soon crawfish will be available again, but there’s a dark cloud lingering over the industry.  White spot syndrome, which was first detected in a Louisiana crawfish pond in 2007, is becoming more of an issue for crawfish farmers.  Although it hasn’t happened yet, the disease could possibly drastically reduce production.  On the upside, white spot syndrome has no impact on humans.
