Over 40 students at two schools in Tangipahoa Parish have been arrested for fighting. 32 students are facing a disturbing the peace charge at Independence High School for fights that happened Tuesday and yesterday. Louisiana will invest nearly six-million dollars into a new center for bariatric and metabolic surgery at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. The End All Hazing Act has been amended to the Higher Education Act.

A sheriff’s deputy and teacher in Livingston Parish are in jail on child porn charges. 44-year-old Dennis Perkins and 34-year-old Cynthia Perkins, a teacher at Westside Junior High in Walker, are each facing 60 counts of producing child pornography and two counts of first-degree rape. Dennis Perkins has also been booked on two counts of video voyeurism.

LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center is adding a metabolic surgery center that will allow the Baton Rouge facility to research new tools in the fight against obesity. Pennington’s Executive Director John Kirwan says the new program will help them research how lap band surgery can reverse Type Two diabetes.

The program is expected to create 55 jobs and attract more than 20-million dollars in obesity research money.

Pennington Biomedical Research Center is adding a metabolic surgery center that will allow the world-renown facility to research new tools in the fight against obesity.

Pennington Biomedical Executive Director John Kirwan says the new building will help them research the science behind a mystery involving patients who receive lap band surgery.

The facility will also offer bariatric and metabolic surgery on-site for patients.

Kirwan says they have some thoughts as to why bariatric patients see a reversal of their diabetes, and research at the new facility may help confirm those suspicions.

The facility will add 55 new direct jobs, and generate an estimated 100 million in economic activity over its first four years. Kirwan says it will also attract world-class professionals to Baton Rouge.

Parents who have lost children to hazing are pushing lawmakers to support the End All Hazing Act and Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy was the first the back the measure in the Senate. The House bill requires schools to publicly share information about student organizations that have been disciplined for hazing. Cassidy says schools must be clear about what takes place on campus.

The bill’s intent is very similar to the College Transparency Act that Cassidy sponsored. It requires colleges and Universities to reports accurate information for example enrollment, financial aid, and post-collegiate outcomes. Cassidy says this bill also holds schools accountable.

Baton Rouge TV stations are reporting the arrest of a high-ranking Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputy and his wife, who is a school teacher in Livingston. The teacher, Cynthia Perkins, was booked on child porn and child rape charges. Her husband, Daniel Perkins has been charged with obstruction of justice. The A-G’s office is handling the investigation.

A mother claims that an officer with the Carencro Police Department broke the wrist of her autistic son during an encounter last week. The woman says police went too far when they came to their apartment complex after receiving complaints about her son, David Moody. Police Chief David Anderson says it’s not the first time they’ve dealt with Moody…

30 Independence High students have now been removed from the school following a massive brawl that broke out Tuesday on the campus. The event has apparently caused lasting issues on the campus as another fight occurred this morning. The cause of the altercation is still under investigation, and students who have been removed will not be allowed back to school until after a disciplinary hearing is held for each one. Classes and normal business hours are back on for the school at this time.
