A new JMC Analytics poll indicates Governor John Bel Edwards has an approval rating of 48 percent. Pollster John Couvillon says however it’s bit more favorable for Republican, Senator John Kennedy with a 53-percent approval rating and his base is pretty reflective of the state’s voting habits.

The House Criminal Justice Committee advances a bill establishing penalties for juveniles in possession of small amounts of marijuana. DeSoto Parish Republican Larry Bagley’s bill corrects an oversight where possession penalties were lessened last year because the bill made no specific mention of minors in possession.

And the things you do for love can get you arrested… while attempting to bond her boyfriend out of the Grant Parish Detention Center, 21-year-old Alaina Cole of Houma was arrested because she drove a stolen vehicle to pick him up. Officials says Cole confessed and she was arrested for illegal possession of stolen things.

A Shreveport man who killed a postal worker pleas guilty to second-degree murder. 34-year-old Michael Gentry will be sentenced to 40 years in federal prison as part of the plea agreement. Gentry killed 52-year-old Antonio Williams in June of 2019 while he was delivering mail. Gentry also faces state charges.

The state marks a milestone with less than 100 hospitalized with COVID however LSU Infectious Disease expert Dr. Catherine O’Neal says we need to be better prepared for the next surge and only 53-percent of Louisianans are vaccinated. O’Neal says there are no significant long-term side effects from the vaccine and it’s still the best form of preventing severe COVID.

State Civil Service chief operating officer, Nicole Tucker, her pay increased by $34,000 over a six-year period and Deputy Director Chris Deer’s pay increased by $43,000 in a matter of three years. Senator Bodi White also told the committee that the Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne was not aware of the raises.

Deputies in West Baton Rouge Parish are investigating a double homicide in the tiny town of Brusly. Officers believe a home invasion robbery was behind the violence that left a 66-year-old man and 29-year-old woman stabbed to death. A suspect is in custody, while the investigation continues.

A Covington woman is in jail after her six-month-old child died in the hospital from a severe head injury. Hospital workers called police on March 23^rd, after seeing how badly the baby was hurt. The infant died Saturday. The mother, 28-year-old Madelyn Mejia-Gallo is charged with 2^nd degree murder.

State Lawmakers will put their regular legislative session on pause, to hold a special veto override session starting Wednesday. Governor Edwards vetoed a congressional district map passed by GOP majorities in the House & Senate. He objected to it not creating a second majority black congressional voting district. The House will need 70 of 105 votes to overturn the veto; the senate 29 votes. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder says lawmakers should vote based upon what their district would want…:

There are 68 Republicans in the House, so an override will require at least one Democrat and one Independent to vote for it.

The state supplement to the pay local police and fire fighters get would go up by $100 a month under legislation approved Monday by the Senate Finance Committee. That would take it from an extra $500 a month to $600 a month. Passed without objection, the bill now goes to the Senate floor for debate.

State lawmakers WILL hold a veto session to try to override Governor Edwards’ veto of the congressional map sent by lawmakers to his desk. The Governor rejected the map because it has no second majority minority congressional district. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder says his chamber will likely take the first vote…:

The House will need 70 votes from its 105 members to override a veto, and it will take 26 votes in the Senate. At least one Democrat in the House, Francis Thompson of Delhi, says he’ll vote to keep the northeastern Louisiana congressional district as it is.
