A Senate Committee advances a bill that would require surgical rooms have proper ventilation to deal with occasional puffs of smoke from procedures involving heat. Things like some laser treatments or cauterizations. Such smoke can obstruct the surgeon’s eyesight, which poses safety risk. Bill sponsor and Lafayette Senator Gerald Boudreaux says his bill is about assuring patient safety..:

His SB 29 requires smoke evacuation measures in surgery rooms. It moves to the Senate floor for debate.

Amid controversy over alleged misuse of a French Quarter apartment owned by the city, the City Council has voted to forbid mayors from any further use of the apartment for overnight stays. Mayor LaToya Cantrell has been accused of using the apartment as if it were her own and for an alleged extramarital affair with a bodyguard.

That’s the bill’s author, Gretna Representative Joe Marino, who says nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population has dyslexia. The bill heads to the House floor for more discussion.

During the legislative session, lawmakers will debate a bill that will triple the pay of legislators from $16,800 a year to 60-thousand dollars. The bill’s author Gretna Representative Joe Marino says lawmakers have not received a raise in over 40 years. Governor John Bel Edwards is not against the bill, but says there are more pressing income matters…

A bill to make operating rooms safer advances from Senate Health and Welfare. Bill author, Lafayette Senator Gerald Boudreaux says heat-producing equipment used in surgeries can create a smoke plume that could obscure a physician’s view.

The legislation requires healthcare facilities to adopt policies addressing this issue.

UL Lafayette’s CAPE team of student researchers will design and build a small solar-powered satellite that will be used by NASA to help keep astronauts safe from radiation. Electrical and Computer Engineering Instructor, Dr. Jared Tessier (Tess-see-yay) says the students are excited to have been selected for NASA’s CubeSat Launch initiative.

The satellite will orbit the earth at least twice a day and will gauge radiation in space through measurements taken with a neutron radiation detector. The satellite will be launched between 2024 and 2027.

LSU’s win over the Hawkeyes in the women’s basketball national championship game has turned out to be a big winner for food banks. Governor John Bel Edwards and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds made a friendly wager before the game and Governor Reynolds has paid up by sending 1,250 pounds of pork to food banks in the state.

Legislation to terminate the parental rights of the violator if a child is conceived as a result of sexual assault is before the legislature. And if a mother wants to place her child for adoption, Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR) President Morgan Lamandre says this bill would also terminate the perpetrator’s rights to intervene in the adoption process.

Keith Nale the Shreveport firefighter who appeared on two seasons of Survivor has died after a long battle with cancer. Nale appeared on season 29 in 2014 and made it to the final four and returned for season 31 in 2015. Nale was 62.

DNA technology and good police work has led to a positive ID in a missing person’s case that dates back to 1986. The missing person has been identified as Paula Boudreaux of Golden Meadow. Her remains were found in 1989 near Slidell. Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre says foul play is likely..

In the years since she vanished, her son has grown to adulthood and both her parents have passed away.

St. Charles Clean Fuels is exploring the feasibility of building a four-point-six billion dollar ammonia production and export facility in St. Rose. If the project moves forward, the facility would produce one of the world’s cleanest sources of ammonia. A final investment decision will be made early next year.

State Police has released more information on a fatal officer involved shooting that took place on April ninth outside of the La Bamba nightclub in Lafayette. Trooper Thomas Gossen says an officer working security detailed shot at 28-year-old Deiondre Solomon after he fired his gun at someone in the parking lot. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Authorities have identified skeletal remains found near Slidell in January 1989 as Paula Boudreaux, a 22-year-old woman woman who disappeared from Golden Meadow in August of 1986. Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre says the 33-year-old case at least gives Boudreaux’s family some closure…

House Bill 298 would also deny the perpetrator visitation rights and any other contact with the child.

And if a mother wants to place her child for adoption, Lamandre says this bill would also terminate the perpetrator’s rights to intervene in the adoption process.

Solicitor General Liz Murrell says she assisted in writing the legislation to better clarify parental rights and to protect women who’ve chosen to either keep or place the child for adoption that was conceived from a violent act.

Fast forward three decades, when new and better facial reconstruction technology yielded an image of the victim that resembled photos of Boudreaux. Family members provided DNA base samples that told investigators the remains were Boudreaux’s. Webre says they will try their best to solve her apparent murder…:

Because Boudreaux’s remains were found in a wooded area 100 miles from where she disappeared, law enforcement thinks foul play is very likely. In the years since she vanished, her son has grown to adulthood and both her parents have passed away. Sheriff Webre says this break in the 33-year-old case at least gives Boudreaux’s remaining family some closure…:

Edna Karr – a predominantly Black high school in Algiers – football team is one of the nation’s best-producing top athletes and earning four state championships in the last five years. Randall says the series will show triumphs and tragedies and how the kids manage life.

Randall believes Director Jackson Fager and Executive Producer Raina Kelley were able to guide the documentary in a way that will inspire and display real-life depictions of a community fighting to save the youth.

On Thursday legislation to provide testing for dyslexia for K through third grade will be heard in House Education. Gretna Representative Joe Marino’s bill would require every child in those grades to be screened at least once for dyslexia. The goal of the bill is to catch and intervene earlier in a child’s education versus later.
