A bill to make it legal for your cremated pet to be buried with you will be heard in House Commerce today. Former veterinarian and Minden Representative Wayne McMahen admits he didn’t know it was illegal to have nonhuman remains interred with humans in Louisiana.

It’s permissible to have personal property buried with humans, things like photos, jewelry, letters, or even Bibles. McMahen says for pet lovers having the option is extremely meaningful.

The legislation prohibits a pet owner from euthanizing a pet without a medical need for the purpose of having the pet buried at the owner’s death.

Legislation to add exceptions for rape and incest to the state’s abortion ban has also prompted other legislation in this regular session. Lift Louisiana Executive Director Michelle Erenberg says House Bill 461 by Slidell Representative Mary DuBuisson would make it easier to get an abortion to treat miscarriages, mainly getting one doctor to sign off on the abortion instead of two….

The bill’s author Chalmette Representative Ray Garofalo says it’s about giving consumers incentives to fortify their homes.

Garofalo says if more homeowners fortify their homes, it helps the homeowner and the insurance company. The bill heads to the House floor.

Jefferson Parish deputies shot and killed a man wanted for questioning – after he allegedly pointed a gun at them outside a house in Metairie. Authorities were called to a  home in the 1700 block of Harvard Avenue when the man arrived in a vehicle – got out, and pointed a handgun at the deputies. At least one deputy fired and the suspect was struck multiple times. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries. The suspects name has not been released.

Legislation requiring insurance companies to provide discounts to ratepayers who fortify their roofs to higher standards was approved by the House Insurance Committee. Chalmette Representative Ray Garofalo – the bill’s author – says if more homeowners fortify their roofs, that would mean less damage after a hurricane.

A Lafayette cop has been arrested for alleged indecent behavior with a juvenile. The investigation stemmed from a complaint of the officer showing a video containing sexual content to the youth. Officer Jacob Desormeaux faces two charges of obscenity. He’s on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
