US Senator Bill Cassidy has filed a bill to help veterans pay reasonable costs of urgent care. The Veterans Emergency Room Relief Act would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to pay emergency room costs for military veterans. Congressman Clay Higgins of Louisiana’s third congressional district introduced companion legislation in the US House.

State Police arrest more than a dozen Acadiana residents as a result of an insurance fraud investigation. Master Trooper Brooks David says they received complaints last July about 16 individuals who were filing false insurance claims.

David says 13 people have been arrested so far, and three suspects are still at large.

AAA projects nearly 40 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, and State Police are asking travelers to make safety a priority. Trooper Dustin Dwight advises drivers to take extreme caution on the roadways this holiday weekend.

Governor John Bel Edwards signs the first piece of legislation from the 2017 regular session. The measure by Leesville Representative Jason Armes establishes the Louisiana Military Medics and Corpsmen Pilot Program, which seeks to help veterans translate their military skills into civilian trades. The new law allows veterans with medical military certifications to work under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Louisiana Economic Development and other partners create a program to help veterans start their own business after leaving active duty. Secretary Don Pierson says the Louisiana Veteran Entrepreneurship Program is a great way to thank those who fight for our freedom.

Pierson hopes this program will create 100 new jobs and generate $5 million in startup capital.

The Department of Health is facing a massive budget cut, and Secretary Rebekah Gee pleaded with the Senate Finance Committee to restore funding. But Mandeville Senator Jack Donahue says healthcare spending now accounts for nearly half of the state’s entire budget.

Donahue says the health budget has grown more than a billion dollars since 2010.

Today and tomorrow Louisiana residents can buy hurricane preparedness items at a discounted sales tax rate. Department of Revenue spokesperson Byron Henderson says lawmakers approved this tax holiday to encourage families to prepare for the hurricane season.

The LSU Tigers will face South Carolina at noon in the semi-finals of the SEC Tournament. The Bayou Bengals were off yesterday and this will be their third game in the tournament, while the Gamecocks will play their fifth game in as many days. South Carolina advanced to the semis with a 3-1 win over Kentucky yesterday. The other semi-final match-up today is Florida versus Arkansas. The Razorbacks routed Mississippi State nine to two yesterday, while the Gators also beat Mississippi State yesterday 12-3.

In the Sun Belt Tournament…the Ragin Cajuns sufffered a heart breaking loss. UL Lafayette was up 5-1, but gave up five runs in the ninth inning to Georgia Southern who ended up beating the Cajuns 7-to-6 in 11 innings. Rough outing for Dylan Moore, who gave up four runs. So UL Lafayette will have to wait if they will receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.

All three Louisiana teams in the Southland Tournament have been eliminated. UNO beat Southeastern Louisiana 7-to-4, and top-seeded McNeese fell to Houston Baptist 5-4. And then the Privateers were sent packing when they lost to Sam Houston State 7-1. McNeese and Southeastern Louisiana are on the bubble to make the NCAA Tournament.

In softball, Florida State took Game 1 of its Super Regional Series with LSU by scoring two runs in the sixth inning to beat the Tigers 3-1. LSU will look to even up the series at 2 PM in Tallahassee.

The Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District approves funding to develop a master plan on renovating the Superdome. Saints officials say a master plan will also begin discussions for a long-term agreement between the state and the two professional franchises owned by Tom Benson. The teams’ existing lease agreements with Louisiana end in 2025.

A note on a napkin saved a woman’s life in West Monroe. KARD reports a woman was being held hostage by her boyfriend at a motel. She reportedly convinced 30-year-old Dennis Griffin to take her to Chili’s. While returning from the bathroom, she passed a note to her server asking for help. West Monroe Police responded immediately.

State health secretary Rebekah Gee pleaded with lawmakers to restore funding for her department, which is facing a massive budget cut. She says without matched state dollars, we won’t be able to draw down federal funds. She adds that healthcare benefits the entire state.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is seeking information on driver in Marksville who threw a dog out the window of a moving vehicle last Sunday afternoon. The man was driving a dark green Chevrolet. A witness took the dog to a local shelter, where a rescuer named her Penny. The Humane Society is also asking for donations towards Penny’s medical care, as she may need surgery on a fractured leg. Donations can be made at humane-la.gov.

There’s a new program from Louisiana Economic Development to help military veterans start a business after returning home. Secretary Don Pierson says the idea for the Louisiana Veteran Entrepreneurship Program came after hearing LSU’s Baton Rouge campus was helping disabled veterans in a similar way.

A proposal to increase the state’s gasoline tax by 17 cents a gallon could undergo changes to get the necessary support from lawmakers. Baton Rouge Representative Steve Carter says similar legislation has failed in the past, but lawmakers need to come together to support this measure.

Students with disabilities would be protected from corporal punishment in public schools under a proposal heading to the Senate floor. Baton Rouge Representative Franklin Foil says his bill would prohibit school employees from spanking students with developmental disabilities.

Foil’s bill has already been approved by the House and received the backing of the Senate Education Committee on Thursday. An amendment has been added to the proposal to also include students ADHD. Foil says his legislation also defines what constitutes corporal punishment.

Foil says the Governor’s Office asked him to carry the measure as part of their education package. He says he was surprised to learn schools were spanking children with disabilities at all.

Concertgoers at this weekend’s Bayou Country Superfest can expect even more security after the attack at a concert in Manchester. Producer Quint Davis says safety is always the number one concern, and everyone should feel comfortable attending the event.

Davis says this is the 9th annual B-C-S, but it’s the festival’s first time in the Superdome. He says the three-day festival had to be moved, as the event’s usual venue, Tiger Stadium, is undergoing renovations. He says they’ve made the show even bigger and better for the new locale.

Davis says they’re thrilled that it won’t be hot or rain inside the new venue. He notes the indoor arena gives them a chance to go all out with the production this year to go along with the superstar performances.
