A mother and her two young children died in a crash in LaFourche Parish on Tuesday. State Police say 39-year-old Carmen Valle of Galliano and her 5-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were traveling on a roadway in Larose when for unknown reasons the mother veered into the opposite lane of traffic and struck a box truck. The mom and her kids were all unrestrained, ejected upon impact and eventually succumbed to their injuries.

A vote is expected today in the House to raise the state’s gasoline tax to fund more highway construction projects. State Representative Steve Carter originally called for a 17 cent a gallon hike, but he’s willing to amend it to a 10 cent increase. State Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says lowering the proposed tax means fewer mega-projects will be completed…:

A bill to put statewide regulations on ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft is dead for the session. Jackson Representative Kenny Havard filed the bill in an effort to have standard rules, with the hope these companies would expand to smaller cities. The measure passed the House, but it didn’t have enough votes to get approval from a Senate committee so Havard shelved the idea for the session.

A bill seeking to end the so-called sanctuary cities in Louisiana died in a Senate Judiciary Committee. One supporter argued that if an illegal immigrant gets arrested with no identification, police officers would let them go. New Orleans Senator JP Morrell says that’s nonsense.

Police say they’ve identified a man accused of killing a pit bull by dragging it behind a truck on Sunday night in Slidell. Director Jeff Dorson says a passing car pulled over and asked the man what happened, he claimed it was an accident, unchained the dog and fled the scene without the pit bull.

Authorities say the un-identified man is cooperating with authorities.

A Texas Girl Scout group is safe after being rescued from Saline Bayou in Natchitoches Parish. Adam Einck with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says they received an alert from friends and family around 9pm Sunday that a kayaking group of three adults and six juveniles had never returned to their destination..:

The Humane Society of Louisiana is seeking information on a man accused of dragging a pit bull behind a truck in Slidell. Director Jeff Dorson says they are not sure if it was intentional, or if the man had it tied up in the back of the truck and it jumped out.

The Humane Society is offering a $1200 reward for information leading to an arrest.

A Thibodaux woman is behind bars after she allegedly went after her ex-girlfriend with a hacksaw. David Melancon with Thibodaux Police says 23-year-old Lechelsea Jenkins cut a male victims while trying to stop her ex from following him. He says Jenkins chased the woman outside.

A Senate Judiciary Committee rejected a proposal to end so-called sanctuary city policies in Louisiana. New Orleans Police Chief Michael Harrison spoke out against the bill saying it’s all about building trust. He says if the measure passed, it would hurt their ability to maintain public safety.

The Centers for Disease Control finds deaths due to Alzheimer’s disease have increased 55-percent over the last 15 years. Dr. Patrick Gahan with LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center says a reason for the increase could be that doctors are more aware of the disease.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified the sky diving instructor who died after losing consciousness during a jump in Slidell on Sunday. Benjamin Crowell of Theodore, Alabama, was unconscious during the jump and did not pull the main parachute, triggering the reserve parachute which could have not opened properly. The 53-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and the trainee was taken to a hospital. The coroner says it’s possible Crowell was dead before he hit the ground.

In a last ditch bid for House approval, backers of a hike in the state gasoline tax Tuesday morning said they are seeking a 10 cent per gallon increase, instead of 17 cents. The new plan would raise about $300 million per year for roads and bridges compared to $510 million annually under the initial proposal. House Bill 632 is set for a House vote tomorrow afternoon.

A Senate committee will hear the so-called “sanctuary cities” bill today. It took two votes for this bill to pass the lower chamber. Opponents believe it would unfairly target Hispanics. But Attorney General Jeff Landry believes sanctuary cities allow violent criminals to stay in the United States…:

With 10 days to go, Governor John Bel Edwards has told senators he would veto any bill resembling the House approved spending plan for next fiscal year. But House Republicans who crafted the plan say those are scare tactics and the state can’t afford what the governor wants to do.
