LDWF agents in Avoyelles Parish rescued 86 people and 20 pets during last week’s historic flooding. Region commander for the area Captain John Volentine says along with trucks and vessels, agents used the department’s two amphibious vehicles to rescue people stranded by the floodwaters.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree battery after attacking a critic at a restaurant near Madisonville. District Attorney Collin Sims says Smith retired as part of the plea deal and can reduce the felony conviction to a misdemeanor if he completes an 18-month treatment program addressing his alcohol issues.

Planned Parenthood is coming back to Louisiana, with the first reopening happening this fall in New Orleans. Emily Wales, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, says her network took over Louisiana following the closure of the last clinic in the state last September.

Former LSU center Todd McClure is headed to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. After four seasons as a Tiger, McClure was taken by the Falcons in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft. After an ACL injury his rookie season, McClure started 195 games over 14 years in Atlanta and was added to their Ring of Honor in 2022. He says Atlanta was a second home for him.

McClure was a first-team All-American at LSU.

Louisiana lawmakers approved Governor Landry’s executive order redirecting 168 million dollars in non-instructional public school funding to give stipends to teachers. The order has been blocked by a temporary restraining order following a lawsuit filed last week. A hearing to determine the future of the order will be held Monday.

President Trump is meeting with Republican Senators behind closed doors today. Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy says he’s interested to hear what he has to say about peace negotiations with Iran. The outgoing U.S. Senator has criticized the peace deal, calling it a foreign policy blunder.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame will welcome a new class of 12 Louisiana sports icons. Former LSU and Atlanta Falcons center Todd McClure is one of the four Tigers to be honored. A Baton Rouge native, McClure says he’s honored to join such a special group.

The other three Tigers set to be inducted are second baseman Warren Morris, center Sylvia Fowles and basketball coach John Brady.

Former LSU and Atlanta Falcons center Todd McClure will be one of 12 inductees joining the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame this weekend. In 1995, McClure arrived at an LSU program coming off six straight losing seasons. He says playing for the Tigers was a dream come true.

Construction officially began in New Orleans on the Raising Cane’s 9th Ward Stadium at LCMC Health Field. Stacy Martin, the secretary for the board of Ninth Ward Stadium Incorporated, says they hope to one day add an adjacent track and field complex.

Former Ponchatoula High School star Allen Graves was selected 19th overall by the Raptors in the NBA draft last night. Graves led the Green Wave to consecutive D-1 non-select state titles his junior and senior years and was named Louisiana Mr. Basketball. He was the West Coast Conference freshman and sixth man of the year after helping Santa Clara to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 30 years. He says he’ll bring that same winning mentality to Toronto.

Former Newman standout Chris Cenac Jr. was drafted 27th overall by the Celtics. Cenac led the Greenies to a state championship in 2024 and led Houston in rebounds as a freshman this season.

After all the rumors, the Pelicans did not make a move into the first round of the draft last night. They’ll have the 58th overall pick in tonight’s second round.

The NCAA approved the new five-for-five eligibility model. Athletes will now have five seasons of eligibility to be completed within a five-year window that starts either when the athlete enrolls full-time at any college or the first academic year after their 19th birthday. It essentially grants an extra season of eligibility but eliminates medical redshirts and exemptions for other extenuating circumstances. Maternity leave, religious exemptions, and military service are the only exceptions.

Pete Nakos of On3.com reported LSU is one of the frontrunners to land Oregon freshman transfer Angel Laya. The Freshman All-American outfielder hit .296 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs and recorded no errors in 59 starts. Texas, Texas A&M, and Georgia are the others pursuing the slugger.

Former Tigers pitcher Kade Anderson is leading all of minor league baseball with a 1.02 ERA, .152 batting average allowed and 0.65 WHIP. The 2025 third overall pick is currently 7-and-0 with the Mariners’ Double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers.

LSU Softball signed Notre Dame transfer Mickey Winchell. Winchell is currently the only incoming portal signee for the Tigers who have lost eight transfers after a Super Regional appearance this year. Winchell has one year of eligibility after starting four years in South Bend. She hit .335 and drew 25 walks while striking out only 10 times this season.

Louisiana Tech freshman infielder Casey McCoy announced he’ll be entering the transfer portal. The Dutchtown High product hit .281 with five homers. He recorded a .952 fielding percentage in 51 starts for the Bulldogs.

UL Lafayette received two more football commitments over the weekend. Wylie, Texas native Jabriran Blake plays quarterback now but is being recruited by the Cajuns as a defensive back with a blazing 4.35 40-yard dash. Adarius Hines is a 6-foot-6, 325-pound offensive lineman out of East View, Texas who chose UL over Texas State and North Texas.

Just when you thought it was over, the Brendan Sorsby saga continued today as the NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft this summer. A player has not been taken in a supplemental draft since 2019 and the last one held was in 2023.

Parkway three-star wide receiver Gary Burney Jr. flipped his commitment from Houston to LSU after visiting the LSU campus this weekend. 247Sports ranks Burney as the number-75 receiver in the country and the 21st prospect in Louisiana. Parkway coach Coy Brotherton says the 6-3 receiver has become a hot name on the recruiting trail.

Burney is the 14th commitment to LSU’s 2027 class ranked 17th in the country by 247Sports. Five-star Sam Houston offensive lineman Albert Simien will announce his commitment Friday. The number three prospect in the state holds offers from LSU, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Alabama and Nebraska.

Oklahoma took home the College World Series title last night with a 13-2 win over North Carolina. It’s the Sooners’ third title and first since 1994.

The NBA draft is tonight at 7:00. The Pelicans do not own their eighth overall pick after trading it to the Hawks during last year’s draft to move up for Derik Queen. Locked On Pelicans Podcast host Jake Madison says they can go one of two ways: go get a proven star like Jaylen Brown to win now or fully rebuild.

He says the two names to watch for a trade are forwards Trey Murphy and Herb Jones.

One massive name is off the trade market as the Bucks sent former MVP Giannis to the Heat for three first-round picks and four players, including Tyler Herro. The move is big for the Pelicans who were linked to a possible three-team trade that would have sent Antetokounmpo to Boston and Jaylen Brown to New Orleans. The Pels also hold the rights to the Bucks’ pick in next year’s draft.

A rain gauge between Cottonport and Plaucheville measured 29 inches of rain during the downpours caused by Tropical Storm Arthur. State climatologist Jay Grymes is meeting with the National Weather Service in Avoyelles Parish to check and verify the rain gauges in the area. Grymes says if it’s made official, the total would be a new state record.

If you need to file claims from the damage caused by the severe weather, the Department of Insurance has some very important information for you. Commissioner Tim Temple says different policies will respond to different types of claims.

The state is asking all flood victims, regardless of whether or not you have insurance, to report damages to damage.la.gov

Animal advocates are hailing the signing of a bill aimed at protecting Louisiana white-tailed deer. Humane Society of Louisiana Director Jeff Dorson says House Bill 1248 was spawned by a pair of high-profile incidents, in which LDWF agents seized deer from those caring for them and killed them.

Unlike in the primary election, where Democrats outnumbered Republicans in early voting, the numbers were swapped in early voting for the runoffs. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, more than 77-thousand Republicans cast early ballots, compared to just over 54-thousand Democrats. John Couvillon of JMC Analytics and Polling says, despite the robust Democratic turnout in early voting, he expects this to be the end of the road for Democrats.

An estimated 800 to 850 homes and businesses in Avoyelles Parish suffered flood damage during the downpours left by Tropical Storm Arthur. Governor Jeff Landry handed out supplies in the parish today and says officials are working to clean up the debris.

Residents who experienced flood damage are urged to report their losses to damage.la.gov.

The American Red Cross is also participating in the relief effort. Melissa Duplantier with the Red Cross says they’ve opened shelters in Mansura and Opelousas, and they’ll stay open as long as people need a place to go.

Cajun Navy 2016 volunteers aided Gulfport and Biloxi residents this weekend during sever flooding caused by Tropical Storm Arthur. Cajun Navy 2016 Spokesman Trey Williams says the volunteer group rescued several people, including one kayaker.

The Cajun Navy 2016 volunteers have since left the Gulfport area and will be focusing their efforts this week on Avoyelles Parish.

Former LSU golfer Sam Burns was inches away from his first major title, finishing one stroke shy at the U.S. Open this weekend. At last year’s tournament, Burns held a one-shot lead at the start of the final day but dropped to seventh in the final round. Crawling back from a seven-stroke deficit, Burns says this year’s championship felt different.

The American Red Cross is increasing its efforts to provide relief to the historic flooding in Louisiana. Melissa Duplantier with the Red Cross says even those who have places to go, like friends’ or relatives’ homes, the Red Cross wants to hear from them.

Shreveport golfer Sam Burns finished one stroke short at the U.S. Open after a nearly miraculous comeback, trailing by seven shots in the final round. After the tournament, Burns shared an emotional embrace with his father. A father of a two-year-old boy with another child on the way, Burns teared up as he reflected on what could have been.

Iberville Parish native Shelby Bordelon was crowned Miss Louisiana 2026 in Monroe Saturday night. A graduate student at Southeastern Louisiana, Bordelon took home a 15-thousand-dollar scholarship and will advance to the 2027 Miss America Competition in late August.

Former LSU golfer and Shreveport native Sam Burns came up one stroke shy at the U.S. Open yesterday. Burns trailed the leader by seven strokes heading into the final day, but a three-under round wasn’t enough to catch Wyndham Clark. The win would have been Burns’s first major title. At last year’s Open, he was the sole leader heading into the final round at four under par but shot eight over on his final 18 and finished 7th. Burns says this year’s championship had a different feeling.

LSU starting shortstop Kylee Edwards announced she has withdrawn her name from the transfer portal to return to LSU. The Mississippi State transfer entered the portal last week after just one season in Baton Rouge. She hit .341 with ten homers as a junior this season.

The Tigers flipped Houston wide receiver commit Gary Burney Jr. The Parkway three-star is LSU’s 14th commit and second wideout in the class.

LSU has the chance to field one of the top infields in the country next season with the return of shortstop Steven Milam and a duo of experienced transfers. Florida senior Cade Kurland has 190 starts in four years with the Gators and will likely be the LSU starting second baseman. LSU coach Jay Johnson says Texas State sophomore shortstop Dawson Park can shift over to third.

A College World Series champion will be crowned in Omaha tonight. After losing the series opener 9-3, UNC bounced back with a 6-2 win over Oklahoma yesterday to force game three. The winner-take-all final is scheduled for 6 p.m.

St. James safety Jye Blain announced his commitment to Louisiana Tech over the weekend. The 5-11, 170-pound prospect becomes the fifth commit to the Bulldogs’ 2027 class.

The C-W-S Championship Series begins tonight between U-N-C and Oklahoma. The Tarheels came into the tournament as the fifth national seed while the Sooners snuck their way into Georgia Tech’s regional as one of the last teams to make it in. LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson says the teams have had very different paths to get here, but none of that matters now.

The U.S. Men’s National Team clinched a spot in the knockout round of the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Australia yesterday. Both goals for the Stars and Stripes came in the first half, including an own goal from the Socceroos. It is the first shutout for the U.S. since September of last year. The Americans were without star Christian Pulisic, who is nursing a calf injury aggravated in the team’s opening match against Paraguay. They will have one more group stage game next week.

After losing nine players to the transfer portal already, LSU softball is finally punching back. The Tigers landed their first portal commitment in Notre Dame outfielder Mickey Winchell. The senior was a four-year starter with the Irish and hit .335 with 14 stolen bases this season. Winchell was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2023.

LSU signee Braxton Beaty has withdrawn his name from the Major League Baseball Draft. The left-hander from Angleton, Texas will enroll at LSU for the Fall Semester. According to Perfect Game, Beaty has a fastball in the low 90s and a wipeout slider.

Running back Mark Ingram and offensive tackle Terron Armstead will be inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame as its class of 2026. Ingram ranks second in franchise history with 65-hundred rushing yards and 52 touchdowns in 10 seasons with the Saints. The three-time Pro Bowler was picked in the first round of the 2011 draft by New Orleans and says the city changed his life.
