A House committee approves legislation that would allow either chamber of the Legislature to fully terminate or modify an emergency declaration by the Governor on a majority vote.

Abita Springs Representative Larry Frieman says the legislation is not an attack on Governor Edwards’ current powers but sets the stage for future pandemic responses…

Opponents took issue with the fact that only one chamber would have these sweeping powers during an emergency. Frieman says requiring both chambers would make the bill pointless.

Beginning today the second Louisiana-themed episode of Restaurant Recovery airs on Discovery Plus. It’s the brainchild of Raising Cane’s CEO Todd Graves who assisted ten eateries impacted by the pandemic downturn. Graves along with Saints Receiver Michael Thomas helped New Orleans’s legendary Domilise’s Po-Boys.

Louisianans ages 12 and up can now receive Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine as a result of the CDC approving the use of the vaccine in 12 to 15 year-olds. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says this is a step in the right direction.

For a person younger than 18, parental consent is needed to get the shot.  Dr. Kanter says parents questioning whether or not their child should receive the vaccine, should seek professional advice.

The state House will have the opportunity to debate whether transgender athletes should be barred from competing on girls’ athletics teams at public schools. The Senate approved measure has received approval from House Education. Supporters say it’s unfair for a biological female to compete against someone who was born as a boy. But Forum for Equality Executive Director Sarah Jane Guidry says after 12 months of testosterone suppression trans athletes fall under the usual variance in athletic ability from woman to woman.

Panic gasoline buying is a real issue on the East Coast because of the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, which delivers gasoline and other fuels from Gulf Coast refineries to states like Georgia, Virginia, and South and North Carolina. Photos of long lines at gas stations and people pumping gasoline in whatever kind of container they can get their hands on are circulating on social media. Louisiana Oil Marketers and Convenience Store Association Director Natalie Isaacks says a photo of a woman putting gas in an open container is especially concerning.

The state health department is expected to provide formal notice this morning to vaccine providers that they can administer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to kids between the ages of 12 and 15 years old. A Senate-approved bill that would prevent transgender athletes from competing on girls’ sports teams in schools heads to the House floor. Even though Drew Brees is retired, the Saints will still play five primetime games during their 2021 season. The Black and Gold will visit Seattle for a Monday night game in late October, they will host Buffalo on Thanksgiving night, host Dallas the following Thursday, and visit Tampa Bay for a Sunday night game the week before Christmas and then host Miami for a Monday night game two days after Christmas. The NFL schedule comes out at 7 PM, but the league has already released the matchups for week one. The Saints will host the Green Bay Packers on September 12th. It will be a 3:25 kick-off and it remains to be seen if Aaron Rodgers will still be with the Packers when that day arrives.

Again the official schedule comes out at 7 PM, but the entire schedule has already been leaked on the internet. The Saints will have five primetime games including a Thanksgiving night matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

LSU announces all-American cornerback Derek Stingley Junior will wear number seven in 2021. That jersey number usually goes to the Tigers best playmaker.

In seven innings last night, LSU scored 16 runs and beat 14th ranked Louisiana Tech for a second time this season. 16-8 was the final last night after defeating the Bulldogs 16-7 in February. LSU will host Alabama this weekend, while Tech hosts UTSA.

The Pelicans season could effectively come to an end tonight if New Orleans losses at Dallas, and the Spurs defeat the Brooklyn Nets. San Antonio’s game in Brookyn tips off at 7 PM, while the Pels and Mavs will get underway at 8 PM.

In the Sun Belt softball tournament, top-seeded U-L Lafayette blanked ULM seven to nothing. The Lady Cajuns will face South Alabama tomorrow at 10 AM, while the Warhawks will play in an elimination game.

Because of all of the rain Hammond, the Southland Conference Softball Tournament has been moved to St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Fifth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana is scheduled to play tonight at 7:30 versus Abilene Christian.

At the state baseball championships in Sulphur, Notre Dame and St. Charles Catholic have advanced to the Division 3 championship game. The Pioneers defeated St. Thomas Aquinas three to two in eight innings, and the Comets blanked Lafayette Christian three to nothing.

In Division Four…seventh-seeded Opelousas Catholic upended third-seeded Calvary Baptist four to three in eight innings.

The Louisiana House has unanimously passed a bill extending the period in which victims of child sexual abuse can pursue legal actions against their abusers from 10 to 35 years. Lead sponsor and New Orleans representative Jason Hughes says the extension is necessary since most victims delay their disclosure into adulthood.

The bill provides a list of what qualifies as a “crime against the child” including assault, kidnapping, and criminal neglect. Abita Springs representative Larry Frieman asked Hughes why not eliminate the prescriptive period.

A CDC advisory approved the emergency use of the Pfizer COVID vaccine for ages 12 to 15 today. Ochsner Health Pediatrician Dr. William Lennarz says data for this age group is extremely encouraging with the Pfizer vaccine.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has already issued a statement in favor of 12- to 15-year-olds receiving the vaccine. Dr. Lennarz says while yes children are less likely to become extremely ill COVID compared to adults however they are not completely immune to the virus.

Due to the cold storage required for the Pfizer vaccine Ochsner Health says the vaccine will not be available at their pediatric clinics, however, Dr. Lennarz says there are convenient locations for all ages to be vaccinated.

Officials with Ochsner Health say they are ready to begin vaccinating the new age group within 24 hours of the Louisiana Department of Health guidance.

The House votes 53-42 in favor of legislation that would partially limit qualified immunity for police officers in some cases.

Baton Rouge Representative Edmond Jordan says his bill blocks officers from utilizing qualified immunity in a wrongful death or injury suit if a judge deems their conduct to be “unreasonable”.

House Republican Caucus Chairman Blake Miguez opposes the bill. He says passage would make it more difficult to recruit law enforcement officers.
