Yesterday, the Senate voted to override Governor Edwards veto of a bill that bans transgender athletes from playing female sports. The Louisiana Senate has killed an effort to override the Governor’s veto of legislation that would remove the need to get a permit to carry a concealed firearm for those 21 and older. West Monroe Senator Jay Morris says his bill is a 2nd Amendment issue and the state already allows people to carry guns without a permit.

The legislation passed during the regular session with 27 votes, but four lawmakers who voted yes earlier this year, voted no yesterday. Marrero Senator Patrick Connick says he changed his mind after speaking with law enforcement leaders in his district. He says after that happened he got inundated with hateful messages…

The Advocate newspaper reports that more than 90-percent of the LSU football team is vaccinated, which is one of the highest rates in the SEC. When Coach Ed Orgeron was asked at SEC Media Days, he didn’t give an exact number but said most of the guys were vaccinated for COVID.

LSU all-American cornerback Derek Stingley enters the season as one of the top players in all of college football. He’ll wear the coveted number seven jersey this season, which usually goes to the team’s best playmaker. Stingley says he’s excited to wear the number.

According to the league’s coaches, the Ragin Cajuns are the favorite to win the Sun Belt West. U-L-M is picked to finish last. Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State are the co-favorites in the East.

The SWAC released its preseason poll and Southern is picked to finish second in the west, Grambling third. Alcorn State is the favorite to win the division. Alabama A-and-M is picked to win the East.

The Milwaukee Bucks are NBA champions for the first time in 50 years as they defeated the Suns to 105 to 98 to win the NBA Finals four games to two. Milwaukee showed you can be a small market team and win an NBA title with a dominant player in the paint. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 50 points last night. Also, former Pelican Jrue Holiday reportedly earns a one-million-dollar bonus for helping the Bucks win a title.

Now that the NBA season is over. Expect the Pelicans to introduce Pheonix Suns’ assistant Willie Green as the next head coach in New Orleans.

Linebacker Kwon Alexander visited with the Saints yesterday, an indication that Alexander may return to the Black and Gold after tearing his Achilles tendon in the Saints’ Christmas Day victory over the Vikings. The Saints have 11.5 million dollars in cap space and Alexander would give New Orleans a veteran linebacker who produced in seven games with the Saints last season.

The vote was 23 to 15 in favor to override the governor’s veto of permitless concealed carry. 26 yes votes were needed.

It’s the House’s turn today to consider whether to overturn the governor’s veto of a bill that bans transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. 70 votes are needed in the lower chamber after the Senate narrowly voted to override the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 156. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says if lawmakers vote upon party lines, the 68 Republicans in the House need two votes and there are two independent representatives attending the session.

Parts of Mandeville woke up to ten inches of rain this morning, flooding homes and shutting down streets in parts of St. Tammany Parish’s second-biggest city. Matt Doyle has the story.

Rain overnight and into the morning caused flooding in several cities in the St. Tammany Parish this morning in the Mandeville region. Slidell National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Bannan says the area already had a moisture-rich environment in place and that combined with a land breeze…

Bannan says the afternoon heat should help the area dry up somewhat, but more showers are in the immediate forecast. He says areas that flooded this morning should take precautions and surrounding areas as well.

Bannan says the area will experience widespread showers today, Wednesday, and possibly into Thursday.

St. Tammany Parish Public Information Director Michael Vinsanau says most of the worst flooding occurred in Mandeville south of I-12 along US 190…

Vinsanau says at this point they do not have concerns about the rivers and waters north of Mandeville swelling after this deluge as they have in previous heavy rain events.

Vinsanau asks residents to stay off the local flooded roads not only for their own safety but out of courtesy to their neighbors.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says they will not reschedule football games this season if a team is hit with a COVID outbreak. Sankey says if a team does not have enough players to play as a result of COVID, they may have to forfeit that game

Sankey says six of the league’s 14 football programs have a vaccination above 80-percent among its players. The Advocate reports more than 90-percent of the LSU football team is vaccinated, one of the highest rates in the SEC. As cases numbers grow and Louisiana remains one of the least vaccinated states, Senator and physician Bill Cassidy encourages those who are unvaccinated to speak with their personal physician about the vaccine and ignore the politics.

Cassidy was asked about his feelings on mask mandates for school systems amidst the growing number of COVID cases among young people. Cassidy says if the CDC recommends face masks for school-age children he would support it.

Last week LSU Health New Orleans Professor of Clinical Medicine, Doctor Catherine O’Neal issued a dire warning that if you choose not to get vaccinated you are choosing death. Cassidy says the message delivered by his former student was accurate.

The state reported more than 15-hundred new COVID cases today and 20 fatalities. Hospitalizations increase also and currently 779 are in hospitals across the state with COVID.

The veto override of legislation banning transgender athletes from playing on girls’ and women’s K-12 and higher ed sports teams clears the first hurdle, passing the Senate with one vote to spare.

Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell asked lawmakers to support this bill the way they did in the regular session…

The final tally was 26 in favor 12 against and one absent, that being Lake Charles Senator Ronnie Johns who was on injured reserve. The bill heads to the House, but it can’t be taken up for at least a day unless three-quarters of House members vote to accept it from the Senate early.

Mizell says this is a widely popular bill and lawmakers shouldn’t vote on it based on financial or political incentives but based on their conscience and constituents.

The vote was strictly party line with all Democrats voting against.

Alexandria Senator Jay Luneau opposed the bill, saying strict Louisiana High School Athletic Association policy already makes it very difficult for trans athletes to play on girls’ teams.

Luneau says LHSAA policy requires that transgender athletes receive a hardship waiver to play on teams different from the gender on their birth certificate. After receiving a waiver the athlete’s eligibility does not begin until two years after they have had their reassignment surgery and hormonal therapy.

Zachary Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred after a 17-year-old used a ladder to enter the second floor of a home to meet a 14-year-old girl. The girl’s father found the 17-year-old in his home and shots were fired, killing the father, 34-year-old Dezmon Hamilton. Zachary Police Chief David McDavid says parents need to get involved in an effort to curb teen violence…

After climbing into the second-story window of a home, to visit a teenage girl, 17-year-old Nicholas Mcquirter is now facing second-degree murder charges after allegedly fatally shooting the girl’s father, 34-year-old Dezmon Hamilton. Zachary Police Chief David McDavid says when Hamilton found Mcquirter in the home things escalated…

Authorities say a gunfight erupted in a Zachary home when a 34-year-old man discovered a 17-year-old entered his house through a second-story window to visit his 14-year-old daughter. The teenager, Nicholas Mcquirter faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of businessman Dezmon Hamilton. Zachary Police Chief David McDavid says it’s another example of an increase in violent crimes involving juveniles…

A 17-year-old faces murder charges after a shootout with the father of a 14-year old girl he was caught visiting after sneaking into their Zachary home. Brooke Thorington has more.

The search for missing four-year-old Ellis Boudean continues in Jefferson Parish. He was last seen Thursday night in Jean Lafitte National Park and investigators believe the autistic boy’s body is in murky water. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says they are working with a contractor to drain a 75-foot canal.
