State Police say a Trooper has been arrested for striking and killing a pedestrian when he was allegedly driving drunk in Jasper County, Texas. 45-year-old Patrick Bell of Merryville was off-duty at the time of the crash and he’s been on workers’ compensation leave since 2017.

Two years from today, Louisiana voters will head to the polls to elect a new governor as John Bel Edwards is term-limited and can not run again. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says there’s a lot of speculation current statewide elected officials Jeff Landry and Billy Nungesser will run…

A new video game developer, called Possibility Space, announces plans it will build a development studio in the New Orleans area that will build large-scale video games for a global audience. The Saints announce that the late Sam Mills will enter the team’s Ring of Honor at the Caesars Superdome when the Black and Gold hosts the Dallas Cowboys on December second. Mills was part of the team’s famed Dome Patrol and averaged more than 100 tackles per season in his nine years with the Saints.

ULM is a huge underdog heading into Saturday’s game against Liberty. The Flames are 5-and-1 and they have an outstanding quarterback in Malik Willis, who leads the team in passing and rushing…

The 11th ranked Southeastern Louisiana Lions play their first home game of the 2021 season on Saturday when they host Houston Baptist for homecoming. S-L-U is coming off a big win over Nicholls, where they put 58 points on the board.

In other action this Saturday, Nicholls is at UIW. Northwestern State hosts McNeese as both teams search for their second win of the season. Southern is at Arkansas Pine Bluff while Grambling hosts Texas Southern. Louisiana Tech returns is back from a bye week and they are at UTEP.

For the first time in three months, the state health department reports there are fewer than 500 COVID patients in the hospital. In mid-August, COVID-19 hospitalizations were over three thousand. The state health department also reported another 30 COVID deaths yesterday.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees is threatening to strike on Monday unless an agreement is reached with major studios. A strike would halt productions nationwide and in Louisiana. Aaron Bayham, Director of Operations at Celtic Studios in Baton Rouge says agreements are negotiated every three years.

The union says their workers are working excessive hours and are due more compensation from streaming productions.

The state’s economic development department says Possibility Space, a brand new video game maker, plans to open an office in the New Orleans area that will create 75 jobs with an average annual salary of 100-thousand dollars…

Another LSU starter is out for the season as a result of an injury. Coach Ed Orgeron announced today that sophomore cornerback Eli Ricks needs surgery on a nagging injury, which will end his 2021 campaign. Ricks joins Andre Anthony and Kayhson Bouttee as starters who have seen their seasons cut short due to injuries. Center Liam Shanahan was asked about losing Boutte for the rest of the season….

Coach Willie Green said this week that the All-Star has yet to start running after breaking his foot during the summer. The Pels executive vice president David Griffin is expected to provide an update later this week.

There’s cautious optimism as the sugarcane harvest ramps up in south Louisiana. LSU AgCenter sugarcane specialist Kenneth Gravois says the harvest is getting off to a soggy start as many fields are muddy as a result of a wet 2021

2020 was a stellar year for the industry as the American Sugar Cane League estimates 463-thousand acres of cane were harvested, with an average of 85-hundred pounds of sugar produced per acre. Gravois expects the tonnage will be off this year because of a damp growing season…

Cooler and drier weather will enter the Bayou State this weekend and Gravois says it comes at a good time as there’s still a good chance for producers to make money off this crop…

Shipping delays have been an ongoing issue for businesses due to the pandemic but with the holiday season just over two months away Economist Loren Scott says if you’re a last-minute shopper you really could end up being the Grinch this year.

While Scott says he doesn’t see shelves being completely empty for retailers, he does however anticipate a problem if you are looking for a specific gift. So, parents might want to have their kids fill out their wish list from Santa sooner than later.

In the past retailers have saved money by ordering “just in time inventory,” which meant goods were brought in when they were absolutely needed. But with shipping delays and a backlog at ports, Scott says many retailers might adjust their business model.

Social Security benefits will increase by 5.9 percent with the Cost-of-Living adjustment announced today by the agency. Troy Broussard with AARP in Louisiana says it marks the largest increase in four decades.

The increase takes effect in January, with benefit payments to reflect a 5.9 percent hike in the current benefit being paid out to each recipient.

Broussard says the COLA increase in Social Security benefits is something that will be welcomed by those who solely rely on SSI payments and those who don’t.

Broussard praises Social Security for realizing the need for such a significant increase in monthly benefits.

A new COVID variant has been detected in the state. Dr. Krista Queen, Director of Viral Genomics and Surveillance at LSU Health Shreveport says they discovered the B 1.630 variant in samples from the Baton Rouge area which has mutations they are observing.

At this point, the B 1.630 variant has not been found in large enough quantities to be given Greek letter moniker and Queen says it’s still too early to tell if the vaccines might need to be tweaked for this particular variant.

Queen says this is not the first time this variant has been sequenced, but it is a first for Louisiana. She says less than 100 cases of the B 1.630 variant have been detected in the U-S so far.

Queen says they sequence samples of the virus regularly from across the state.

The Ragin Cajuns looked really good last night on national television as they defeated Appalachian State 41-13. U-L Lafayette’s defense forced four turnovers, which resulted in 20 points for the Cajuns. Also, the Mountaineers were held to 83 yards rushing and they were 0-for-11 on third down. Cajuns coach Billy Napier credits his defensive coordinator…

Conference USA has reportedly asked the American Athletic Conference to consider a reorganizing plan that would lead to two new conferences split into geographic lines. But the A-A-C is reportedly not interested and has reportedly tried to take UAB away from Conference USA.

The federal government is expected to announce this morning a sizeable increase in benefits for Social Security recipients next year. Rising prices for goods and servcies will result in larger checks for retirees. Experts say the increase could rival the COLA increase of nearly six percent during the Great Recession in 2009.

LSU-Shreveport is offering a third session of a course in Careers in the Legal Cannabis industry. Dr. Julie Lessiter is Vice-Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives for LSU-S and she says the class is a perfect way to acquaint oneself with the ins and outs of getting into the legal cannabis business…:

After dealing with budget deficits during Governor Edwards’ first term in office, the state is reporting a billion-dollar surplus from the fiscal year that ended June 30th. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says some of the money will go into the Rainy Day Fund and towards other constitutional dedications, leaving lawmakers an additional 450-million dollars to spend in the 2022 legislative session.

The Saints have another kicker. The team released Cody Parkey after just one game as he received an injury settlement. So New Orleans signed Brian Johnson off the Chicago Bears practice squad as Will Lutz remains on injured reserve recovering from core muscle surgery. Johnson is the fourth kicker the team has signed since Lutz’s injury.

Also in the NFL, former LSU Tiger Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been put on injured reserve by the Kansas City Chiefs. Edwards-Helaire suffered a sprained MCL in the loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.

The Department of Children and Family Services says they’ve answered more than 250-thousand calls for D-SNAP and approved 130-thousand households for the benefits. DCFS Assistant Secretary Shavanna Howard says It’s an income-eligible-based program and they look at your income from August 26th to September 24th…
