The Louisiana Department of Health says the state will receive 208-million dollars through the Rural Health Transportation Program. LDH Secretary Bruce Greenstein (Green-steen) says the goal is to increase access to care and help rural residents with chronic or complex health conditions. He says the funds will help sustain operations and upgrade infrastructure at rural healthcare facilities.

Baton Rouge police arrest a 27-year-old man who shot a two-year-old on New Year’s Eve. Lt. L’Jean McKneely says Landrick Ruffin fired multiple rounds at a vehicle after he was approached by a woman in that vehicle, because the victim suspected that Ruffin was driving a stolen car…

The two-year-old is in critical condition and Ruffin was later arrested and charged with six counts of attempted first degree murder.

The primary election for Louisiana’s U.S. Senate seat is in May and this year certain races including the senate race will have a closed party primary. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says registered no party voters can vote in the closed primaries, but the Secretary of State’s office and the campaigns will need to educate voters…

Several new laws went into effect with the new year that are designed to help lower auto insurance rates. One of the new laws will prohibit drivers that are considered 51-percent or more at fault for a wreck from receiving damages in a  civil lawsuit.

A sellout crowd of more than 68-thousand watched a game for the ages. Ole Miss beat Georgia, 39-34, to win the 2026 Sugar Bowl. Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss says he’s enjoying silencing the team’s naysayers.

Lucas Carneiro kicked a 47-yard field goal with six seconds left to give Ole Miss the lead, with the final margin coming on the ensuing kickoff when a botched lateral by Georgia hit their own end zone pylon for a safety.

Kentucky hits a three-pointer with one second left, and the fifth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team lost to the Wildcats 80 to 78 to begin SEC play last night. Kentucky outrebounded LSU 45-29 and had 18 second-chance points to LSU’s 4. Coach Kim Mulkey says her team was not tough enough.

LSU star linebacker Whit Weeks has announced he will return for his senior season. Safety Dashawn Spears is also coming back.

Saints linebacker Demario Davis plans to play a 15th season in the NFL at the age of 37. Davis says he’s accelerating toward the finish line this year. Receiver Chris Olave will not play in Sunday’s season finale at Atlanta, because of a blood clot in his lung. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The transfer portal window opens tomorrow and the LSU Tigers will be looking to sign two quarterbacks, since they only have one scholarship Q-B on the current roster. Lane Kiffin’s staff will also have to rebuild the offensive line and Glen West with Geaux 247 says the defensive line will be a key position too…

Two LSU Tigers have decided they will be returning next season, running back Harlem Berry and safety Dashawn Spears. There was a report that Spears planned on entering the transfer portal, but a couple of hours later it was announced he was staying at LSU.

Tonight is the Sugar Bowl, the winner between Georgia and Ole Miss will play Miami, who upset Ohio State 24-14 last night in the Cotton Bowl.

The fifth ranked LSU women’s basketball team faces its first ranked opponent of the season tonight as they tip off SEC play by hosting 11th ranked Kentucky at 7 PM at the Maravich Center. LSU leads the nation in scoring offense, averaging 108 points per game. Coach Kim Mulkey told WWL Radio the offense has been great, but to be the best they have to be great on defense.

The Cats enter the game ranked first in the country in blocked shots and third in scoring defense.

The Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball team shot 35-percent from the field yesterday and lost to South Alabama 63 to 58 to fall to 3-12 on the season.

Nicholls is 4=0 in the Southland for the first time since 1998 after beating U-T-R-G-V 71-69, Northwestern State lost to Stephen F Austin 74-64, and the Pelicans lost to the Bulls 134-118.

According to the state department of Health, Noah was the most popular boy for babies born in Louisiana in 2025. Liam, James, John and Elijah round out of the top five. Amelia is the most popular girl’s name, followed by Charlotte, Olivia, Emma and Eleanor.

 

At midnight tonight, fireworks will be popping across Louisiana. State Fire Marshal spokesperson Ken Pastorick says children should be not be involved in the lighting of fireworks and that includes sparklers too…

Pastorick says the best thing to give kids are glow sticks.

The Superdome will host Ole Miss and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl tomorrow night, and the Rebels’ offense will be led by LSU Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis. Weis followed Lane Kiffin to Baton Rouge but agreed to stay on as the offensive play caller for Ole Miss’s playoff run. He says he’s had to balance prepping for Georgia with establishing a new regime at LSU with the transfer window fast approaching.

If you’re planning on ringing in the new year in the French Quarter, there are things you need to know before you go, especially in light of what happened just after we rang in the start of this year. The French Quarter Enhanced Security Zone is re-established, encompassing an area bound by Canal, Royal, St. Ann and Dauphine streets. State Police Trooper Danny Berrincha says when entering that area, the best rule of thumb is to bring as few items with you as possible.

Berrincha says visitors staying in hotels on Bourbon Street should use the entrances on Royal Street or Dauphine Street if possible.

With the exception of emergency purposes, vehicles are prohibited from entering the zone – essentially Bourbon Street and one block in either direction. Glade Bilby, the president of The French Quarter Citizens, says he agrees with that move.

Bilby says in light of what happened at the outset of this year, New Orleans has no other option but to take extra precautions and significantly beef up security to give visitors peace of mind.

As the clock ticks towards midnight, some people will be celebrating the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 by popping fireworks. If you’re among them, there are things you need to know to stay safe. Ken Pastorick with the Office of the State Fire Marshal says when shooting fireworks, make sure you’re in an open area.

Pastorick says never put dry fireworks debris in garbage cans – embers can ignite and start a fire; and if that can is next to your house, you can burn your house down.

Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. State Police is working with the National Guard to enforce the French Quarter Enhanced Security Zone, which means backpack coolers, ice chests and large bags will not be allowed in this zone.

Louisiana Tech rallied from a14-6 deficit in the Independence Bowl to beat Coastal Carolina 23 to 14 in Shreveport yesterday. The victory is LA Tech’s first bowl win since 2019 and the Bulldogs finish the season 8-and-5, head coach Sonny Cumbie’s best mark in four years in Ruston. Cumbie says, despite national narratives, bowl games are as important as ever, and he hopes this season’s success can welcome a new era in Bulldogs football.

Darrell Barbay of Mansfield has been named the Class 2A Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Barbay led the Wolverines to their first ten-win season and quarterfinal appearance since 1993.

Lafayette Consolidated Government has received an eight-million dollar grant to implement safety improvements along Johnston Street. From 2018 to 2022, eight people were seriously injured or killed between Bertrand Drive and Churchill drive on Johnston Street. Most of the victims were walking or biking.

National Guard troops have arrived in NOLA to provide security for the New Year’s celebrations. They were also in the city for last year’s Super Bowl and Mardi gras celebrations. The Guard has been deployed to the French Quarter and a New Orleans Police spokesperson says they are not involved in the ongoing immigration crackdown, Operation Catahoula Crunch.

Below freezing temperatures are expected for most of the state tonight and into tomorrow morning. LRN Meteorologist Bill Jacquemine says the wind chill will make it feel even colder…

State Fire Marshal spokesperson Ken Pastorick says never resort to creative methods to heat your home, like running a gas stove. That will produce carbon monoxide, which will kill you. Pastorick also reminds you not to leave fires in fireplaces lit overnight.

84 people have died in house fires this year that’s more than the 73 reported for 2024.

Louisiana Tech is your Independence Bowl champions. The Bulldogs defeated Coastal Carolina 23 to 14 to finish the season 8-5. Tech’s defense forced three turnovers in the second half.
