Davis had a career-high in tackles this past season. General Manager Mickey Loomis told reporters at the Senior Bowl in Mobile that they want Davis back.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin and running backs coach Kevin Smith were in the 3-3-7 yesterday visiting high schools. Their first stop was Cecilia High School, likely checking in with four-star athlete Braylon Calais. Kiffin and Smith also stopped at Acadiana High School, Westgate and Albert Simien at Sam Houston.

The sixth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team is currently riding a five-game winning streak, and the Lady Tigers look to make it six straight tonight against Arkansas at 7 p.m. Head Coach Kim Mulkey says this is one of the closest teams she’s ever had in her time in Baton Rouge.

Should be a win for LSU as Arkansas is winless in SEC play.

Brutal defeat for the LSU men’s basketball team last night as the Tigers fell behind by 27 points in the first half and never challenged the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a humiliating 80-66 loss.

Louisiana Tech won its first game on the road as the Bulldogs defeated UTEP 69-59. Tech has won four of its last five.

The state health department has confirmed another winter storm-related death, but the number of deaths connected to the ice storm is still eight. That’s because the death of a 62-year-old man in Sabine Parish is no longer considered storm related. So, the eighth death tied to the storm is a 65-year-old man in Jackson Parish who died from hypothermia after his home lost power.

Red Cross disaster action teams have responded to scores of home fires in the last week. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Traffic is flowing smoothy once again on I-20 between Shreveport and Monroe.  Erin Buchanan with DOTD says crews were able to clear I-20 of all of those stalled 18-wheelers that had traffic halted for multiple days.

Ruston Mayor Ronnie Walker says with help from local police, he went to I-20 on Monday to provide the hundreds of stranded motorists with food and water…

Another contributing factor….according to Governor Jeff Landry the brine sprayed on I-20 to prevent ice from forming, actually froze, so it was NOT able to act as an anti-icing agent.

The American Red Cross says over the last seven days they’ve responded to no fewer than 44 single-family home fires and two multi-family home fires throughout the state. Shelby Wells with the Red Cross of Louisiana says they are not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of Americans to perform its mission. Wells says the money that the Red Cross gives to those who are displaced by a fire is never a loan…

The cold weather is not good for crawfish as mudbugs find warmth by burrowing into the mud. LSU Ag Center crawfish agent Todd Fontenot says that keeps them growing…

Another blast of arctic air is expected this weekend, but Fontenot says we are still on pace for a normal peak crawfish season that runs from late February through April.

 

Vehicles are finally moving at a normal speed on I-20 as the interstate that crosses north Louisiana is finally free of the dangerous ice that had traffic at a standstill for multiple days. DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says drivers on I-20 still need to be careful…

You may have heard about a private jet crash in Maine that killed six people last Sunday. One of the victims is Sabine Parish native and Tulane graduate Tara Arnold. Arnold was a personal injury attorney in Houston. The plane was on its way to France and it stopped in Maine. The aircraft crashed shortly after take off in snowy conditions in Maine.

LSU’s passing game coordinator during its magical 2019 national championship season is now a head coach in the NFL. Joe Brady, who has been the offensive coordinator in Buffalo, has been promoted to head coach. The 36-year-old Brady replaces Sean McDermott who was fired after nine season as the head coach in Buffalo.

In college basketball last night, Stephen F Austin defeated Northwestern State 69-67, UNO upended Nicholls 80 to 62, McNeese started a three-game road trip by beating Southeastern Louisiana 76 to 66.

Tonight, LSU begins a soft part of its schedule by hosting Mississippi State, Tulane hosts South Florida and Louisiana Tech is at UTEP.

The Pelicans two-game winning streak ended last night with a 104-95 loss to Oklahoma City.

 

Former Jennings High School head football coach Rusty Phelps passed away on Friday after suffering a stroke. Phelps coached for a total of 35 years, with 28 at Jennings and he won over 200 games. Former Eunice football coach Paul Trosclair says Phelps was one of the good guys.

Visitation for Coach Phelps is tonight and his funeral is tomorrow in Jennings.

Former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is at the Senior Bowl looking to rebuild his draft stock. Nussmeier didn’t get to finish his college career off on a high note at LSU, but says he’s looking forward to the Lane Kiffin era in Baton Rouge.

Nussmeier says he’s now healthy after a core injury limited him last season.

Senator Bill Cassidy is calling for a full joint federal and state investigation into the events in Minneapolis that he described as “disturbing.” In a conference call with reporters, Cassidy said things in Minneapolis have gotten out of hand.

On social media, Cassidy said the credibility of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security are at stake. He says it seems that they may have lost sight of the purpose of the enhanced immigration enforcement operation, and that could have a profound effect on President Trump’s legacy.

Back home in Louisiana, I-20 is now flowing smoothly again after the ice storm left some motorists stranded on the interstate for up to 20 hours. Captain Kenneth Balkom says LDWF agents also conducted welfare checks on the drivers who were stranded. He says winter weather and Louisiana do not mix well.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is at the Senior Bowl this week to showcase his talents to NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers. Nussmeier battled an abdominal injury last season and says he’s worked hard to get back to 100-percent to participate in Mobile.

Going into the 2025 season, Nussmeier was a potential first-round pick, but after an injury-plagued season, he is now projected as a third to sixth-round pick.

Joe Brady, LSU’s passing game coordinator during the Tigers’ 2019 national championship, has landed a head coaching job at the age of 36. The Buffalo Bills promoted Brady after two seasons as their offensive coordinator.  Buffalo’s offense has been one of the best in the NFL since Brady took over as O-C.

A highly respected high school football coach has passed away. Former Jennings coach Rusty Phelps died late last week from a stroke at the age of 62. Phelps won over 200 games at Jennings and led the Bulldogs to a state championship game appearance in 2019. Former Eunice Coach Paul Trosclair, who coached against Phelps for many years, says Phelps meant a lot to the Jennings community.

In college basketball last night, McNeese State dribbled past Southeastern Louisiana 76-66, UNO upended Nicholls 80 to 62, and Northwestern State came up a little short against the Lumberjacks, losing to Stephen F Austin 69 to 67.

About 90-thousand people in north Louisiana are still without power. Governor Landry says getting their power turned back on is a major priority. Landry says the number of linemen and crews have doubled as they’ve been able to shift personnel from south to north Louisiana. He says he’s hopeful 90-percent of customers will have power restored by Thursday.

Once the power is restored, an extensive cleanup will need to take place. There is a lot of debris that needs to be hauled away. Monroe Representative Michael Echols says many businesses impacted by the ice storm will need some federal assistance…

Echols has called the damage done to Ouachita Parish as catastrophic.

 

The ice and snow has made travel difficult on I-20. According to social media reports, some motorists sat on the interstate, with no way to move for up to 20 hours. Department of Transportation spokesperson Erin Buchanan….

For those of you in North Louisiana, DOTD is urging you to stay off the roads once again today, if you possibly can. Spokeswoman Erin Buchanan says that especially includes I-20.

Buchanan says those stalled 18-wheelers on I-20 are making the roadway nearly impassable, in some cases stranding people in frigid conditions for hours.

Cut 4 (11) “…out of there.”

Buchanan says they’re trying to help those stranded people as best as they can.

Buchanan says temperatures should start to warm up today to the point that the ice should start to melt and traffic can start moving again. But in the meantime, DOTD has its crews out on roadways clearing the ice as much as possible.

The state health department has announced five additional deaths because of the winter storm, bringing the total number to eight. The cause of death for five of the victims is hypothermia. L-D-H also says an elderly person in DeSoto Parish died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Also in DeSoto Parish, a 79-year-old woman died after her oxygen concentrator failed as a result of no power. And a Texas man also died while traveling on icy roads in Mansfield. Governor Jeff Landry wants residents in north Louisiana to do these two things…

Landry spoke in Monroe today after taking a tour of some of the destruction the ice storm has caused in Ouachita Parish. Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis says once the ice melts away, the clean-up will be extensive…
