Louisiana is a big winner at the JRNY (“Journey”) America Awards, taking home three awards. Louisiana won for State of the Year, and New Orleans won for Best Food City and Best New Tourism initiative – the latter being for the new Amtrak Mardi Gras service. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says the Mardi Gras service, which connects New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama, with stops in Mississippi along the way, is something that he worked on and is something he’s very proud of.

Nungesser says the award for State of the Year is testament that while New Orleans is certainly a world class tourist attraction, there’s a lot more for visitors to see throughout the whole state.

Starting in May, you’ll once again be able to fly from Alexandria to Houston and back. United is restarting service between Alexandria International Airport and Bush Intercontinental Airport. Airport Executive Director Ralph Hennessy says service had been discontinued in 2022, and not because the route wasn’t profitable.

Hennessy says AEX had worked to restore service to Houston since the day service was discontinued. The airport got its big breakthrough when SkyWest Airlines came into the picture.

Hennessy says the airport made SkyWest a guarantee to secure the resumption of the service to Houston.

Cut 9 (12)  “…revenue guarantee.”

The first million comes from a DOT grant, and the remaining 200-thousand dollars is pledged by the Alexandria-based Louisiana Central Community Foundation. When service resumes in May, there will be two daily non-stop flights, with each flight about 45 minutes.

There may officially be one month to go in the 2025 hurricane season, but State Climatologist Jay Grymes says for all intents and purposes, Louisiana will make it through this year unscathed.

Grymes says that’s because history has shown that this time of year, the threat of tropical weather in the Gulf of Mexico is nonexistent.

Grymes says not only is Louisiana out of danger for this year, but our neighbors to the east can breathe a sigh of relief as well.

This year, no storm of at least tropical storm strength made landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast. The closest was Tropical Storm Barry, which made landfall in central Mexico in late June.

LSU fans, alumni, and supporters are hoping for a quieter week after a topsy-turvy few days last week that saw major changes to the athletic department. Football coach Brian Kelly and athletics director Scott Woodward are both gone, and some say Governor Landry’s fingerprints are all over Woodward’s departure. Former LSU linebacker Darry Beckwith is concerned about what is going on at his alma mater…

The Louisiana Department of Health says the state will begin funding food stamp dollars to the EBT cards of SNAP recipients starting tomorrow. During this first week, SNAP-eligible households will receive 25-percent of their benefit, and then seven days later they’ll get another 25-percent and so on. The state is NOT providing food assistance to able-bodied adults, impacting 53-thousand people.

Good news for Louisiana soybean producers as China has agreed to buy 12 million metric tons of US Soybeans this season. Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says the U-S is the second-biggest producer of soybeans in the world…

Special Education Teacher and Democrat Lauren Jewett announces she’s running against nine term incumbent Steve Scalise to represent the 1st Congressional district in Congress. She acknowledges it won’t be easy to match Scalise’s campaign funds.

According to the latest Federal Election Commission filings, Jewett reported just over 73-hundred dollars in cash on hand, compared to Scalise’s five-million dollars.

At a press conference this morning, LSU introduced New Iberia native and longtime athletic administrator Verge Ausberry as its interim athletic director. Ausberry will lead the search for a new football coach. He’s forming a committee that includes members of the LSU Board of Supervisors and major donors to the athletic program.

Despite the dramatic changes, Ausberry says the LSU athletic program is not broken.

Governor Jeff Landry did not want Woodward to hire the new coach because of the huge buyout that LSU private donors will have to pay to Brian Kelly. Landry made it clear on ESPN’s Pat McAfee show that he will not be involved in hiring the next head football coach…

One of the craziest weeks in LSU sports history took another turn last night as Scott Woodward is out as athletics director, one day after Governor Landry said he did not want Woodward picking the Tigers next football coach.

Woodward, an LSU alum and Baton Roug native, served as the athletics director for six years. He hired three coaches that won national championships, Jay Johnson, Kim Mulkey and Jay Clark, but Tiger Rag Editor Glen Guilbeau says the big money contract he gave Brian Kelly to leave Notre Dame did not work out…

It’s Halloween, so you’re urged to use a little extra caution as you go out and about your day today – especially if you’re driving at night. Greg Fischer with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says pay extra attention when going into neighborhoods during the early evening hours.

Fischer says when trick or treating, it’s best for kids to do so in packs, carry a flashlight and wear bright clothing. Fischer also has this ingenious idea.

DPS Trooper Eddie Thomas says when your little ghouls and goblins come home with a pumpkin-shaped bucket full of candy, fully inspect it and throw anything suspicious out, including anything homemade.

By law, registered sex offenders are not allowed to participate in Halloween – they cannot hand out candy to kids. Thomas says parents should do a little homework before trick or treating and find out which homes in their neighborhood have sex offenders living in them.

DOTD is urging Louisianans to sign the “Buckle Up, Phone Down” pledge. The campaign encourages drivers and passengers to do just that – wear their seatbelts and put the phone down while driving. Rodney Mallett with DOTD says seat belt use reduces the risk of a fatal injury in a crash by more than 45-percent.

Mallett says cell phones can come in very handy in cars – as long as you use the hands-free functions.

Mallett says taking your eyes off the road, even for the shortest amount of time, can have very disastrous results.

Congressman Steve Scalise will have a Democratic challenger in next year’s general election. Special education teacher Lauren Jewett is launching a campaign to unseat the nine-term incumbent.

Jewett says she feels that she’s more in tune with the needs of the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District, particularly those on Medicaid.

Jewett acknowledges that it will not be easy to raise the money that Scalise brings in. In fact, according to the latest Federal Election Commission filings, Jewett reported just over 73-hundred dollars in cash on hand, compared to Scalise’s five-million dollars.

So far, no one else, either Republican or Democrat, has declared his or her candidacy. The district is very heavily Republican.

Tiger Rag magazine editor Glenn Guilbeau says it didn’t matter that the LSU grad hired three national championship-winning coaches in Jay Johnson, Kim Mulkey and Jay Clark – the money he paid Kelly, who never came close to winning a national title, ultimately led to his demise.

Guilbeau says it was only a matter of time before Woodward was going to follow Kelly out the door at LSU.

Executive Deputy Athletic Director Verge Ausberry, who was a star linebacker for the Tigers in the 1980s, has been tapped to serve as interim athletic director. Guilbeau says it’s unclear whether the school is giving Ausberry serious consideration for the permanent role.

Former LSU linebacker and current Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s name has been thrown around for the LSU head coaching job. Sheppard shut those rumors down and says he is focused on shutting down the Vikings.

Governor Landry let his thoughts be known about the firing of Brian Kelly and the search for a new head coach. At a press conference at the state capitol, Landry said A-D Scott Woodward will not hire the next coach at LSU; instead, it will be a committee formed by the LSU Board of Supervisors. And he believes it’s time the NCAA does something about the agents who are negotiating these contracts that result in huge buyouts for coaches who get fired…

Private sources will play Kelly’s huge buyout.

Ed Orgeron said on ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike that he’s just a phone call away and he would love to return to LSU as a head coach or even as an assistant. Orgeron has made it known he wants to coach again next season.
