According to Madison Trust Company, the Monroe area has the highest percentage of house holds living below the poverty level at nearly 42-percent. Lafayette is ranked ninth at 36-percent, Shreveport-Bossier City is ranked 14th at 35-percent and Hammond is 19th at 34-percent.

Because of the difficulty in finding drug companies willing to supply what’s needed to perform lethal injections, a bill has been filed to add options and protections to those companies. Brooke Thorington reports the legislation will be discussed in the crime special session which begins Monday.

Gas prices are rising. According to AAA, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.94 that’s up nearly 20 cents from a month ago as oil prices are also up.

Governor Jeff Landry’s budget proposal includes money for teachers to continue to receive the two-thousand dollar pay raise they got last year. But this two-thousand dollar increase is not permanent as there’s a concern about a drop in state revenues in future years. Legislative director of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers Cynthia Posey hopes lawmakers make the pay raise permanent as they make changes to the proposed budget…

Zion Williamson is not going to the All-Star game, but he played like an All-Star last night as the Pelicans defeated Washington 133 to 126. Williamson scored a season high 36 points. New Orleans heads into the All-Star break with a 33-22 record.

Louisiana Tech men’s basketball looks to end a two-game losing streak tonight as they host Jacksonville State. The Bulldogs are 6-3 in Conference USA, tied for first with Sam Houston.

Blue Cross withdrew its filing and cancelled a policyholder vote saying their stakeholders need more time and information to understand the proposal. Shreveport Senator Thomas Pressly says he and other senators had many concerns…

Governor Landry’s budget proposal for the next fiscal year includes $198 million for a second round of stipends for teachers, but no permanent salary increase. Louisiana Federation of Teachers Legislative Director Cynthia Posey says educators thought the stipend pay hike would last more than one year.

The Landry administration is concerned about the loss of 550-million dollars in annual revenue when a temporary .45 cent sales tax expires in July of 2025.

The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the number of chronic wasting disease cases confirmed in deer in Louisiana is up to 19. So far the fatal disease has only been found in deer in Tensas Parish. CWD has not been found to be contagious to humans, but state wildlife veterinarian Doctor Jim LaCour recommends not to consume a deer known to be positive.

LSU baseball Coach Jay Johnson has named Thatcher Hurd as the Tigers starting pitcher on opening day against VMI. Hurd was the winning pitcher in the College World Series championship game and was outstanding in the postseason last year. Alabama transfer Luke Holman will start game two. Johnson is holding off on naming a starter for Sunday’s game.

The Pelicans play their final game tonight before the All-Star break as they host the Washington Wizards. New Orleans is coming off a three and one road trip. Meanwhile, Washington is just 9-and-44, so a good chance for the Pels wto win their 33rd game of the season. Tip off is at 7 PM.

The Saints will reportedly hire former Chargers running backs coach Derrick Foster as their new running backs coach. Foster worked with Austin Ekeler and helped him score 44 total touchdowns during a three year period.

And Broncos coach Sean Payton has officially named former Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael as a senior offensive assistant in Denver.

The LHSAA girls basketball playoffs get underway tonight. In non-select. here are your top seeds….Walker, Wossman, Rosepine, Arcadia and Hicks. In select….Huntington, Lafayette Christian, Dunham, Southern Lab and Oak Hill. The state championship games will take place on March 1st and second in Hammond.

The LSU men’s basketball team rallied back from 20 points down against Florida last night, but came up a little short and fell to the Gators 82-80. Jordan Wright had a great chance at tying the game, but his floater in the lane bounced off the rim. The Tigers have lost six of their last seven.

Angel Reese has been named SEC Women’s Basketball player of the week for a tenth time.

A New Orleans couple is being recognized for the second year in a row, as Louisiana’s Longest Married Couple by the Louisiana Family Forum. Ira and Margery Milan of New Orleans have been married for 82 years. President Gene Mills says the Milan’s story is one of love, faith, and joy.

Ira and Margery are both over 100 years old. Ira, a World War II veteran, served in the Philippines. The Milan’s have a large loving family including eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mills says music has been a major component of their marriage.

In addition to the Milan’s, the Family Forum is also recognizing three couples who were married 77 years: Burl and Mary Clark of Jena, Lloyd and Audrey Schroeder of Jefferson, and Leland and Gussie Lacaze of Robeline.

Mills says it’s important to recognize couples who have long lasting marriages.

The Milan’s will be inducted in the Marriage Hall of Fame and will be joined by the top ten runners up.

Willis Knighton Health System is celebrating its 100th birthday and marking the occasion with a new name, image, and renewed commitment to northwest Louisiana. President and CEO Jaf Fielder says the facility was originally known as the Tri-State Sanitarium in 1924. It was a small suburban hospital on the outskirts of Shreveport.

Fielder says the word system implies a building and he says they are much more than a facility, so their new name is Willis-Knighton Health.

Fielder says they are keeping the WK logo because it’s one of the strongest known monikers in northwest Louisiana, but it will get a slight makeover, with a modern and sleek font.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana has announced its not moving forward with a merger with Elevance Health. The Indiana-based company was attempting to buy the non profit health insurance company for two-point-five billion dollars. Several lawmakers were concerned about this deal. Blue Cross says its stakeholders need more time and information to understand the benefits of the changes proposed.

Love is in the air on this Valentine’s Day and it’s making a dent in the economy with a record 25 billion dollars expected to be spent on gifts this year. That’s according to the National Retail Federation and Vice President of Consumer Insights Katherine Cullen says that’s the third highest dollar figure in their survey’s history.
