Near-freezing temperatures have Louisianans across the state bundling up today. Matt Hemmingway with the National Weather Service in Shreveport says temperatures dropped to just below freezing this morning in North Louisiana, while the southern half of the state is hovering around 40 degrees.

Hemmingway says people will want to break out the winter wear tomorrow as well.

Governor John Bel Edwards is meeting with residents of St. Joseph today, after a public health emergency was declared in the small Tensas Parish town. Deputy Chief of Staff for the Governor’s Office, Julie Baxter Payer, says high levels of lead and copper were found in two water samples in St. Joe.

The Governor’s Office is providing three liters of water a day to each of the roughly 500 residents of St. Joe. Payer says the governor has ordered that the water in every home be tested for lead and copper. She says they believe the problem is the pipes, and there’s a lot of construction that needs to be done on St. Joe’s water system.

Residents of St. Joe have been dealing with dirty water flowing from their faucets for nearly a decade. Payer says construction on the water system is underway. She says they are doing what they can to get clean water to the town’s residents sooner rather than later.

A man from El Salvador who admitted to being an illegal alien has been detained by federal authorities in Covington after a St. Tammany Parish deputy discovered an outstanding warrant on him out of Central America. Captain Daniel Seuzeneau says 36-year-old Juan Sanchez-Roldan was pulled over on Highway 190…:

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns in New Orleans’ 48-41 win over the Cardinals. The future Hall of Famer says the whole team played well in this one…

Brees silenced the naysayers who started to wonder if he’s done playing at a high level. The previous two games, Brees was intercepted six times and did not throw a touchdown.

There’s once again speculation about Coach Sean Payton’s future with the Saints. A CBS-sports report says the Saints would be interested in trading Payton in the offseason and would not demand a lot in return. There’s already two coaching vacancies open in the NFL, as the Rams and Jaguars are looking for new head coaches.

The state’s top quarterback, Lowell Narcisse, has re-committed to LSU. The St. James star was also serioulsy considering Auburn, but made the decision to attend LSU after speaking with new offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Narcisse will graduate in December and should be on LSU’s campus next month.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette, who has decided not to play in the Citrus Bowl, has signed with Jay Z’s sports agency, Roc Nation.

The loss to Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl gives UL Lafayette a 6-7 record for the 2016 campaign, their second straight losing season. But Coach Mark Hudspeth says he’s optimistic about 2017 as they have a bunch of returning starters coming back on offense and defense…

He says he’s most proud of his work in the post-Katrina recovery, as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the coast just months after Vitter was sworn in as a Senator.

Vitter served as Louisiana’s 1st Congressional District Representative from 1999 to 2004 and as a US Senator since 2005. Prior to that, Vitter served in Louisiana’s House of Representatives from 1992 to 1999. He says there are some things he did not accomplish that he hopes will be achieved under the Trump Administration, including term limits for lawmakers.

Fewer Louisianans are smoking cigarettes, according to the United Health Foundation. The report found 22-percent of Louisiana residents are smokers, compared to 24-percent in 2015. CEO of the Smoking Cessation Trust, Mike Rogers, credits legislation that bans smoking in bars and casinos, like one that was passed in New Orleans last year.

Louisiana now ranks 43rd in the country for the rate of smokers, up from 46th last year. Rogers says there are many health benefits to quitting smoking, and smokers will notice a change in their health almost immediately.

The US average for adult smokers is about 17-percent. Rogers hopes we’ll continue to see a decline in the number of smokers. He says the public is becoming more knowledgeable about the dangers of smoking.

There’s talk around the Capitol about the potential for another special session to address a looming $300 million budget shortfall for this fiscal year. That’s according to La-politics-dot-com, who heard that from a source within the Edwards administration. But political analyst and pollster Bernie Pinsonat says voters do not want to raise any more taxes.

The Revenue Estimating Committee meets again in January, so lawmakers will have a better idea of how much money is available. Pinsonat says voters believe there’s too much spending, which was evident when Senator-elect John Kennedy won the runoff by a landslide 61 to 39-percent.

Lawmakers met for three back-to-back sessions earlier this year and still failed to raise enough revenue to avoid midyear cuts to higher ed, healthcare, and TOPS. Pinsonat says at this point Louisianans are okay with cutting back state services.

Louisiana Willdlife and Fisheries Secretary Charlie Melancon tells the Associated Press he’s been forced out from his Cabinet Position. Melancon says he’s not been given a reason why, but he’s had public disagreements with recreational fishermen and has been criticized for his handling of agency changes that have been recommended by state auditors. A spokesperson for the governor says there’s been unnecessary public battles as the agency tries to reform.

Louisiana is no longer the least healthy state in the country, according to the United Health Foundation. The Bayou State ranks 49th, while Mississippi is now 50th. But the report found that funding for public health in Louisiana decreased by 28-percent over the last four years.
