17:30 Hurricane Nate Update October 7th

Nate still has it’s eyes on Louisiana.  The hurricane has not made it to land yet.  David Zelinsky with the National Hurricane Center says it appears it will arrive somewhere in extreme southeastern Louisiana…

That landfall is expected around 8pm tonight.  Meanwhile, Governor John Bel Edwards will be watching for the aftereffects from Nate due to a possible 7 foot storm surge in New Orleans…

A curfew will be in effect for New Orleans after 7pm.  Shelters are open in St. Charles, St. Tammanay, Tangipahoa and Washington Parishes.

A curfew will be in effect for New Orleans after 7pm.  Nate will make landfall around 8pm as it continues to move north/northwest at 23 miles per hour.

15:30 Hurricane Nate update October 7th

Hurricane Nate is expected to make landfall tonight around 7 in far southeast Louisiana or far southwest Mississippi as a category 2 hurricane.  At last report, the storm was located about 100 miiles south of the mouth of the Misissippi river moving north-northwest at 25 miles an hour.
There had been concern over possible heavy flooding in the New Orleans area but Governor John Bel Edwards says local authorities should have that under control…

Meanwhile, a hurricane warning remains in effect for the greater New Orleans area, Lake Pontchartrain and from Grand Isle to the Alabama/Florida border.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, as of one o’clock this afternoon Hurricane Nate was located at 27.6 degrees north, 88.9 west, or about 105 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River, moving north-northwest at 25 miles an hour. Maximum sustained winds are 90 miles an hour.  Tropical storm winds are expected to reach the mouth of the Mississippi River around 4 o’clock this afternoon with the eye of the storm reaching  us around 7 as a category two hurricane.
Governor John Bel Edwards says there is still time for Nate to move more toward Louisiana or more toward Mississippi and Alabama…

Ragin Cajuns offensive tackle Grant Horst and place kicker Stevie Artigue are expected to return to the field against Idaho on Saturday. Safety Travis Crawfod will likely miss another game with a leg injury.

It will be an early start to college football on Saturday across Louisiana, because of Tropical Storm Nate. Southeastern Louisiana will kick off at 10 AM against Incarnate Word. The Lions can improve to 3-and-1 in the Southland with a win. U-I-W is winless at 0-4.

At 11 A-M, Nicholls will host Northwestern State. The Colonels are trying to get to 2-and-1 in the Southland, while the Demons are currently 1-and-1.

Also in the Southland…McNeese is at Abilene Christian in a battle of teams who are 2-and-1 in league play.

A couple more early starts…Southern hosts Alabama for homecoming at 1 PM and Tulane takes on Tulsa at Yulman Stadium at 11 AM.

Louisiana Tech and ULM both are on the road in conference games. Both north Louisiana schools are favorite to win. The Bulldogs are at UAB and the Warhawks are after a 3-0 start in the Sun Belt.

A state of emergency has been declared for Louisiana as Tropical Storm Nate races toward the Gulf Coast. Last summer, pumps failed to work when heavy rain fell in New Orleans. Governor John Bel Edwards has the National Guard ready to move if needed if they fail again this weekend:

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has ordered a citywide curfew starting tomorrow night at 6 PM.

The latest forecast track has the New Orleans area in the cone of uncertainity with a potential landfall around midnight on Saturday. St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister says their main concern is flooded roadways….

The official forecast track from the National Hurricane Center shows Tropical Storm Nate making landfall as a Category One Hurricane at the mouth of the Mississippi River late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Here’s what Plaquemines Sheriff Jerry Turlich is telling coastal residents….

Turlich says one of their biggest concerns is the possible flooding of Highway 23.

State Climatologist Barry Keim says Nate is moving north-northwest at 21 milies per hour. Keim says there is a chance the storm will veer to the east and miss the Louisiana coast..:

Nate has maximum sustained winds at 50 miles per hour. The center of Nate is moving quickly toward the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Governor John Bel Edwards has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of Nate’s arrival this weekend. State officials are hoping Nate only gives Louisiana a glancing blow, but they are preparing for a possible direct hit. Edwards says federal relief agencies are ready to respond, even though three major storms have hit U-S territories…

Plaquemines Parish officials are gearing up.  Sheriff Jerry Turlich says one concern is the main travel route in Plaquemines (plaque-a-mines) Parish.  Sheriff Jerry Turlich says one concern is the main travel route, highway 23 could flood.  He says Myrtle Grove is especially at risk so they are making traffic control preparations.

The Calcasieu  Parish Sheriff’s Office Animal Cruelty Investigator says they responded to a home in Lake Charles, finding a dead dog inside.  They found the dog emaciated inside a crate without water.  The dogs owner, Camilla Ross was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Early voting for the October 14th election, which concludes tomorrow, has been light. Secretary of State Tom Schedler (Shed-lure) expects a very light turnout from the two-point-nine million registered voters…

Schedler says the turnout might be even lower than 20-percent. The ballot includes a special election for state treasurer, a south Louisiana Public Service Commission seat, three constitutional amendments and the general New Orleans mayoral race, where 18 candidates are running.  He (Shed-lure) hopes the candidates will stir up more interest before next Saturday..
