The Cameron Parish Sheriff’s office has released more information about the severed head found on the shoulder of Highway 27, south of Hackberry. Based on forensic testing, it’s believed the victim is a white female between the ages of 25 and 50, with auburn or brown hair. The victim also had a lot of dental work done and not apparent trauma to the skull.

The Pelicans won their eighth straight last night as they easily beat the lowly Dallas Mavericks 126-109 last night. Jrue (Drew) Holiday led the way with 30 points. Nikola Mirotic (KNEE-coal-uh Mir-oh-tich) broke out of a mini shooting slump and had 25 points. Anthony Davis couldn’t knock down any outside shots, but still had 23 points and 13 rebounds. New Orleans heads to L-A, where they’ll play the Clippers on Tuesday night.

In college baseball…LSU is on a three-game winning streak after beating Southeastern Louisiana four to two yesterday. Antoine Duplantis and Beau Jordan homered and Ma’Khail Hilliard threw four shutout innings of relief for his third win on the young year. LSU hosts Southern tomorrow night.

Baylor beat Louisiana Tech six to one, Kentucky clobbered the Cajuns 10-4, ULM swept Southern Illinois, Tulane crushed Cal State Fullerton 9-3, 16th ranked Southern Miss thumped Nicholls 20-4.

A sort of “Re-do” bill has been pre-filed for the upcoming legislative regular session by Metairie Senator Conrad Appel. Senate Bill 31 disqualifies would be candidates from running for office after convicted of a felony for at least 15 years after they have served a sentence. Voters approved this legislation before, but the Louisiana Supreme Court tossed it out, because the version that appeared on the ballot was different than what legislators approved. So Appel wants to put it on the ballot again…

The “re-do” measure was also killed last session in the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, but Appel is bringing it back again.

Bestschools.org has ULM as the only Louisiana college to be ranked in the 100 Best Online Colleges, coming in at number 58. Online Programs coordinator Katie Dawson says the wide range of degrees they offer through the internet is a large reason they get high marks…

The Louisiana School Board Association is asking the state legislature for an increase of 70-million-dollars to provide better school security and increase safety measures. LSBA Executive Director Scott Richard says the increase would allow schools to put their local funds to better use…

All hope appears lost that the state legislature will pass any tax measures in this special session to address a nearly one-billion dollar shortfall. A sales tax bill that would provide nearly 300-million dollars in revenues was defeated soundly for a second time last night. Jeremy Alford, the publisher of LA-politics-dot-com, was there for the vote

After the vote, the House adjourned until 4 PM today . But Alford says it’s unlikely the fractured House will gather the necessary 70 votes to pass this sales tax bill or the 53 votes to approve a separate income tax bill that’s also been discussed…

Two weeks ago, a 17-day special session began with hope lawmakers would close a 994-million dollar shortfall that will come about when temporary sales taxes expire on June 30th. Alford says this session is on the verge of crashing and burning, because no one was able to get on the same page on how to solve the fiscal cliff

Governor John Bel Edwards says House leadership is not negotiating in good faith. He says a vast majority of the House wanted to solve this problem, but were not given the chance. The governor says budget reform proposals wanted by the speaker made it through the process. He says the governor kept his promise, House leadership did not.

The session must end at midnight on Wednesday night.

The weekend is off to a good start for the LSU baseball team, who dominated Toledo 8-1 last night behind tremendous pitching from Zack Hess. The sophomore right-hander struck out a career-high 13 and did not walk a batter. Hunter Feduccia (fuh-DEW-shuh) hit a grand slam as the Tigers improved their record to 6-4. LSU faces Sacred Heart at the Box tonight as Caleb Gilbert looks for his first win of the season.

Big win for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs upset 10th ranked Texas A-and-M four to two in the Frisco College Classic. The Cajuns offensive problems continue as they lost 3-1 to Mississippi State. ULM edged Southern Illinois 5-4. Sacred Heart knocked off Southeastern Louisiana five to three, Ohio State doubled up Nicholls 6 to 3, Northwestern State edged Little Rock 6-5, and UTSA topped McNeese 1-0. Grambling crushed Prarie View 10-4.

The LSU men’s basketball team closes out its regular season at noon today as they host Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last ten as State has put themselves in position to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers need to win in order to avoid having to play on the first day of the SEC Tournament.

The Ragin Cajuns look to finish off the regular season with a perfect record at home as they host Arkansas Little-Rock. ULM needs a win to have a shot at getting a first round bye in the Sun Belt Tournament.

Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana will play for the top seed in the Southland as the two teams will meet in Hammond. McNeese will host Lamar and a win for the Cowboys and they can lock up the final spot in the Southland Tournament.

And Grambling will win a SWAC title if they beat Alabama State. Louisiana Tech looks to end a three-game losing streak at Southern Miss. The Bulldogs are in 9th place in conference USA.

The Pelicans put their seven game winning streak on the line tomorrow night at Dallas.

A win for the Tigers and they’ll be seeded anywhere from 9th to 12th in next week’s SEC Tournament. If LSU is seeded 10th or higher they will avoid playing on the first day of the tournament, which is Wednesday. A loss to the Bulldogs and LSU will be seeded 12th.

ULM is seeking a first round bye in the Sun Belt Tournament and to help that cause they need to beat Arkansas State on Saturday.

UL Lafayette has already secured the top seed by winning the Sun Belt. They will try to complete an undefeated season in the Cajundome when they face Arkansas-Little Rock.

Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana will battle for the top seed in the Southland Tournament. The two teams meet at 5 PM in Hammond. The Colonels already have clinched a share of the league title, but they lost to the Lions earlier this season.

Coach Tony Robichaux will serve the second game of his two-game suspension for excessive aruging with umps last Sunday. And Nicholls State is other in Pensacola, where they’ll play Ohio State this afternoon.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Saints are meeting with Drew Brees’ agent. Head Coach Sean Payton said at the draft combine that he expects talks will go smoothly on a new contract. Also, multiple reports say the Saints will not re-sign safety Kenny Vaccaro.

With one game left in the regular season, ULM put itself in position to secure a first round bye in next week’s Sun Belt Tournament. It wasn’t a pretty game, but the Warhawks held off Little Rock 48-44. Travis Munnings had 21 points to lead the way.

Grambling State can win a SWAC title on Saturday when they visit Alabama State. The Tigers snapped a two-game losing streak with an 84-74 win in overtime over Alabama A-and-M. Ivy Smith Junior had a career-high 32 points.

Police are on the lookout for a man involved in the murder of a 29-year-old man in New Iberia. Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal says they are seeking 26-year-old Akeam Daniels. Daniels is described as a black male, five-foot-ten-inches-tall, weighing 155-pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Ackal says it was a crime of passion…

The Ragin Cajuns won their school-record 26th game as they defeated Arkansas State 85-74. UL Lafayette also moved to 14-0 at home. Frank Bartley surpassed 1,000 points for his career by scoring 18 points, and Bryce Washington added 15 for the Sun Belt champs.

 

ULM helped its chances at securing a first-round bye in the Sun Belt Tournament by beating Little Rock 48-44. Travis Munnings had 22 points as the Warhawks improved to 9-8 in the Sun Belt. ULM is in a three-way tie for fourth place.

 

10th ranked Cincinnati clobbered Tulane 78-49, Grambling remains in first place in the SWAC after beating Alabama A-and-M 84-74 in overtime. Ivy Smith junior had a career-high 32 points. Smith had four three-pointers and nine rebounds. Grambling leads Texas Southern by one game in the conference standings. T-S-U topped Southern 90-88.

Anthony Davis has been named the N-B-A’s Western Conference Player of the Month. A-D put up huge numbers as he averaged 35 points 13 rebounds, two steals and two blocks a game. The Pels have won seven in a row and came back from 15 points down to beat San Antonio last night.

LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri is making a change with his weekend rotation. He’s moving Todd Peterson out as the Sunday starter and replacing him with freshman right-hander AJ Labas (LAY-biss), who has yet to pitch this season after undergoing back surgery in December. The Tigers will play three different teams this weekend. On Friday night it’s Toledo, Saturday Sacred Heart and then the Tigers host Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. The Lions beat LSU last night 5-4.

The Sun Belt champion Ragin Cajuns return to the Cajundome tonight to host Arkansas State. A win tonight and UL Lafayette will break the record most wins in a season. They are currently 25-4. The Cajuns have also won 16 straight home games, the second longest streak in the nation.

ULM looks to start a new winning streak when they host Little Rock. The Warhawks five-game winning streak ended last Saturday against Troy. Grambling looks to end a two-game losing streak when they visit Alabama A-and-M. And Tulane hosts 10th ranked Cincinnati.
