The LSU Tigers are 5-0 and ranked fifth in the country heading into Saturday’s SEC showdown with Florida in the Swamp.

Hundreds of people participated in a vigil last night to celebrate the life of LSU basketball player Wayde Sims who was fatally shot during a large altercation near Southern University’s campus last Friday. Several people spoke, including his father Wayne Sims, a former LSU basketball player. 44 balloons were also released to match the number of his jersey. Sims funeral is this Saturday.

The Saints get to enjoy one more off day, because they do not play the Washington Redskins until Monday. The Saints beat the Redskins last year, erasing a 15-point deficit in the 4th quarter to beat Washington 34-31 in overtime. Coach Sean Payton says even though the Redskins have a different quarterback this season, Alex Smith, they are capable of putting points on the board….

A poll paid for by Restore the Mississippi River Delta finds that 79-percent of coastal voters support sediment diversion projects as a way to build back Louisiana’s vanishing coast. There is opposition to these large-scale engineering projects, because of what impact it may have on fisheries and economies of coastal communities. The difficult stretch of LSU’s schedule begins Saturday when they visit 22nd ranked Florida. Coach Ed Orgeron says the Gators have the best defense they’ve faced this season, so they’ll need another big game from Burrow…

Orgeron says there are similarities between this Gator defense and the one they saw against Mississippi State last year. Last year the Bulldogs, with Dan Mullen as their head coach, held LSU 270 total yards.

Good news on the injury front for LSU. Orgeron said today starting center Lloyd Cushenberry should play Saturday after labeling him very questionable yesterday.

The 3-and-1 Saints have an extra day to get ready for the 2-and-1 Washington Redskins. New Orleans will host the Skins for Monday night football. Washington should be well rested as they are coming off a bye week. The Redskins two wins were over Arizona and Green Bay, while they lost to the Colts. The 33-year-old Adrian Peterson has rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Saints get running back Mark Ingram back from a four-game suspension.

The Pelicans are now 0-2 in the preseason after losing to Atlanta 116 to 102 last night. Julius Randle had to leave the game after hard fall to the court. He finished with 11 points. Anthony Davis had 16 points. The Pels next preseason game is Friday versus the New York Knicks.

There will be a vigil at 8 PM tonight outside of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for late LSU basketball player Wayde Sims, who was fatally shot last week. 20-year-old Dyteon Simpson has been charged in Sims’ murder. The Advocate reports Simpson was known as a quiet, churchgoer.

One woman is dead and another in the hospital after being trapped in an overturned vehicle stranded in a canal for over 24 hours. Brittany Guillory and Jada Jones, both of Ville Platte, were on the way home early Sunday morning when the vehicle drove off a curve on North Line Road in Port Allen. West Baton Rouge Sheriff spokesperson Lt. Ken Albarez says the car struck some trees in its path.

Officials recovered the victims from the canal Monday afternoon after two friends of the girls, Catera Ned and Alexander Chinn went on the hunt for them and eventually found them. Albarez says he believes divine intervention lead them to the vehicle.

Albarez says he considers the friends that put in the effort to find the two, to be heroes.

Guillory died in the accident.  Jada Jones survived and continues to recover from her injuries.

Louisiana will receive 3.6 million dollars from the U-S Department of Education to help schools statewide develop and expand their emergency operation plans for disasters, whether they are natural or manmade. The governor’s education policy advisor, Donald Songy, says they want every school to have a plan in place if students are threatened

A woman’s body found in Cameron Parish was apparently burned with gasoline as part of a possible homicide. 32-year-old Mitzie Galimidi appears to have already been dead when her body was brought to the scene and doused, according to authorities. Cameron Sheriff Ron Johnson says so far they have very little evidence.

Johnson says if authorities conclude it’s not a homicide case, whoever dumped Mrs. Galimidi still isn’t getting off Scott free.

Two teenagers have been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of an Airman stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base. Sergeant 30-year-old Joshua Kidd of Bossier City was found with a gunshot wound to his chest last Tuesday. Police say evidence linked 17-year-old Jareona Crosby and a 15-year-old male to the murder.

One woman died, but another woman survived after being trapped in an overturned vehicle in a water filled ditch for more than 30-hours. The victims are from Eunice and the single vehicle wreck occurred in West Baton Rouge Pairsh. Lt. Ken Albarez says two friends of the girls went looking for them after they did not return home and somehow found the damaged car…

Elsewhere around the NFC South, safety Eric Reid is set to make his Carolina Panthers debut this Sunday. Reid has kneeled during the National Anthem in the past, but told reporters Monday he’s not sure how he will continue to raise awareness in the fight against social injustice at Sunday’s game against the Giants.

And the Bucs announce Jameis Winston will return as the starting quarterback when Tampa Bay comes back from its bye week.

L-S-P says an investigation has determined that John Kelly used his authorized access to law enforcement databases for unauthorized activities.
