Louisiana will receive 3.6 million dollars from the U-S Department of Education to help schools statewide develop and expand their emergency operations plans for disasters, whether they are natural or manmade. The state education department will work with LSU’s counter-terrorist education academy to provide schools with necessary technical assistance, training and implementation.

Louisiana leads the pack in FAFSA submission rates after a major policy change for high school seniors. Matt Doyle has more.

State Police has arrested one of its own Troopers and charged him with felony Abuse of Office. L-S-P says an investigation has determined that John Kelly used his authorized access to law enforcement databases for unauthorized activities. Kelly was booked into the Bossier Parish prison and bond set at 10-thousand dollars.

A 25-hundred reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of someone who allegedly threw a dog out of a moving vehicle on I-20 in Webster Parish. The dog named “Faith” was dragged by other cars and did not survive from her injuries. Humane Society of Louisiana Executive Director Jeff Dorson hopes law enforcement finds the person responsible and he’s punished severely…

The emotional testimony provided by Christine Blasey Ford resulted in a 201-percent increase in calls for a typical day to the National Sexual Assault Hotline. Ford testified for nearly four hours last Thursday in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee alleging Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh tried to rape her. The National Hurricane Center is watching a broad area of low pressure over the southwestern Caribbean Sea, it has a low chance of development over the next five days as it moves north.

There will be a vigil at 8 PM tonight outside of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for late LSU basketball player Wayde Sims, who was fatally shot last week. 20-year-old Dyteon Simpson has been charged in Sims’ murder. The Advocate reports Simpson was known as a quiet, churchgoer.

A 2,500 dollar reward is being offered for information leading to the person who threw a dog out of their vehicle on I-20, killing it. Matt Doyle has more.

Orgeron says starting center Lloyd Cushenberry is the latest offensive lineman to get hurt and he’s very questionable for Saturday’s game against Florida. True freshman Cole Smith took over for Cushenberry when he got hurt against Ole Miss.

On the recruiting front, Ruston High offensive lineman Ray Parker announced his commitment to LSU. He’s a four-star prospect.

It was a no brainer for the Conference USA to name Louisiana Tech defensive end Jaylon Ferguson as the Defensive Player of the Week. He set a career-high with four sacks in a single game. He’s only 4.5 sacks away from tying the program record. Bulldogs kicker Bailey Hale was also named Special Teams Player of the Week.

McNeese Senior linebacker BJ Blunt has been named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Cowboys 17-10 win over Stephen F Austin. The New Orleans native had a career-high 12 tackles, along with two sacks and a fumble recovery. The Cowboys are ranked 9th in the FCS poll, the Colonels are ranked 12th.

Louisiana has the highest FAFSA submission rates in the nation according to a new report. That means more students than ever are applying to see what financial aid they qualify for when it comes to post-secondary education. EdTech Senior Consultant Stephanie Marcum says the 84 percent participation rate comes down to a new mandate for graduating high school seniors.

The Louisiana Department of Health tested the drinking water at 12 elementary schools built before 1986 and did not find heightened levels of lead. State Health Officer Doctor Jimmy Guidry says if elevated levels of lead were found in the drinking water, repairs would be needed…

LSU Health New Orleans is the recipient of a one-point-three million dollar federal grant to pay for the training of sexual assault nurse examiners in 12 parishes in southeast Louisiana. Doctor Jessica Landry says currently one-point-three-million residents share one sexual assault nurse examiner and the New Orleans area sees a little more than two times the national average when it comes to sexual assault cases…

State health officier Doctor Jimmy Guidry says the results are encouraging, but it doesn’t mean the drinking water at all older schools is lead free. He says they will test the water at 12 more schools next year and 12 more after that…

LSU Health New Orleans has received a $1.3 million grant from the US Department of Health and Human services to increase the availability of sexual assault nurse examiners, or SANEs, in twelve southeast Louisiana parishes. With many of those parishes being limited on resources, Dr. Jessica Landry, says they will use the funds to train more nurses.
