Starting nose tackle Ed Alexander will not play in the Fiesta Bowl as he’s made the decision to turn pro. The Tigers will be missing several key defensive players for their Fiesta Bowl matchup against U-C-F.

The Saints can clinch the number one playoff seed in the NFC with a win Sunday over Pittsburgh. Let’s see if playing at home can get the Black and Gold’s offense going. They are 5-1 in the Superdome this season and averaging 38 points a game in those contests.

Back to college football recruiting….Louisiana Tech signed 11 players yesterday, nine of them are three-star recruits and most of them are on the defensive side of the ball. The Bulldogs also signed wide receiver Kyle Maxwell, who is just led Amite to a Class Two-A stat championship.

ULM signed 17 players, five of them are from the junior college ranks. According to 24-7 sports-dot-com, seven of the signees are three-star prospects. West Monroe offensive tackle Victor Cutler decided to stay home and signed with the Warhawks.

The Ragin Cajuns signed two quarterbacks, Chandler Fields from Rummel High School and Clifton McDowell from Spring Texas. UL-Lafayette also signed a couple of south Louisiana wide receivers Brandon Legendre from Thibodaux and Lake Charles Brian Smith.

A south Louisiana man on work release allegedly forced his way into a Lacombe home where his wife and child were staying and shoved his wife to the floor. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s office says 33-year-old Keith Bickham allegedly took his employer’s pickup truck in Livingston Parish and drove to Lacombe. Bickham faces additional charges.

State GOP chairman Louis Gurvuich has expressed a desire to move to closed primaries that only party members vote for party candidates. Currently, voters are free to vote for whoever is in the primary, and the top two candidates advance to the general election. Most states have closed primaries and Governor Edwards says in this case, its ok to stand out…

The Louisiana Department of Revenue is gearing up to begin collecting sales taxes on internet purchases made with out of state vendors. Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson says businesses that do not have a physical presence in Louisiana have been instructed to collect 8.45-percent sales tax and four-percent of that tax will go to local governments…

Senator John Kennedy was one of 12 Republican Senators to vote against President Trump’s criminal justice reform bill in Congress. The legislation aims to reduce sentences for non-violent offenders and reduce recidivism, but Kennedy says it lets potentially dangerous people back into society too soon.

Orgeron says starting defensive tackle Ed Alexander will not play in the Fiesta Bowl against UCF on January 1st. That’s because Alexander has decided to turn pro and forgo his senior season. Orgeron says with Alexander gone and defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko out with an injury, Tyler Shelvin will have to step up.

Saints wide receiver Ted Ginn Junior who has been on injured reserve since October 19th because of knee surgery, was back at practice yesterday. Ginn is eligible to come off I-R and the former Ohio State standout says he’s up to speed, but it’s up to the organization on whether he’ll play Sunday against the Steelers.

The Pelicans got 27 points from Anthony Davis, 25 points from Jrue Holiday, but New Orleans lost to Milwaukee 123-115. The Bucks shot 51-percent from the field and 80-percent from the free throw line. Gannis Antetokounmpo had 25 points for Milwaukee. New Orleans visits Lebron James and the Lakers on Friday. King James said last night it would be amazing if L-A traded for A-D, but Davis told ESPN that right now his focus is with the Pels.

In college basketball last night, Ivy Smith hit two free throws with four seconds left as Grambling defeated Southeastern Louisiana 69-68. California Baptist beat Southern 79-76.

While many internet transactions are already seeing sales taxes collected for the state, as of January 1, all purchases from out of state internet retailers will be subject to a flat 8.45 percent tax. Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson says some of the bigger retailers have already been collecting the tax.

Robinson says her office has provided out of state internet vendors with guidance on collecting sales tax from purchases made by Louisiana consumers and are expected to do so after January 1st.

State Republican Party Chairman Louis Gurvuich has indicated he would like to see an end to Louisiana’s Jungle Primary system. He says it creates issues for Republicans when there’s a large field of candidates running for office. But on his “Ask the Governor” show, Edwards said closed primaries would foster a political culture closer to the one in Washington D-C…

Saints Coach Sean Payton said today they know the corrections that need to be made in order to get the offense scoring at a high rate again. Through the first 11 games of the season, New Orleans averaged 37 points a game, but in the last three, they’ve scored a total of 50 points. Payton says cutting down on the penalties would be a start, they had nine of them on Monday against Carolina. New Orleans hosts Pittsburgh this Sunday. A win and they lock up homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

The Pelicans begin a four-game road trip tonight in Milwaukee. Power forwards Nikola Mirotic and Julius Randle will not play, because they both have sprained ankles. New Orleans is already short-handed, as point guard Elfrid Payton is still out with a broken finger. Tip-off tonight is at 7 PM.

Back to national signing day, Louisiana Tech received a signed national letter of intent from wide receiver Kyle Maxwell, who helped Amite win a Class Two-A state championship. West Monroe defensive tackle Dalvin Hutchinson signed with the Ragin Cajuns, and former Amite quarterback Elijah Walker signed with ULM.

Louisiana’s two US Senators are on opposite sides of a criminal justice reform bill approved by the Senate on an 87-12 vote. Bill Cassidy says the legislation helps non-violent and low risk parolees re-enter society, get a job and stay out of trouble. But John Kennedy says the First Step Act is a violation of American public safety.

According to  the US Census Bureau, Louisiana is among nine states that has seen a loss of population, with a decrease by nearly 11,000 in the time between July 2017 and July 2018.  Demographer Greg Rigamer says it’s not a good sign and a reflection upon the state’s economy.

Since 2010, Louisiana’s population has only increased by 115,000, compared to Texas who has seen an increase of 3.5 million and Florida with 2.5 million.  Rigamer says although those are larger states, the rate of growth is multiple of that seen in the Bayou state.

Rigamer says much of the out migration involves college grads who leave the state for stronger and more viable employment opportunities.

Bossier City will see 80 jobs, and Baton Rouge 160 as the result of two new YoungWilliams customer service call centers. The contract to process calls for the Department of Children and Family Services will run for five years. Economic Development Secretary Don Pierson says it’s a prominent company, with a good background.

The callers will answer questions about child support enforcement, food stamps, and cash assistance programs.

Pierson says YoungWilliams is investing in the state for the long haul.

The center will receive about 500,000 calls a month.

Pierson celebrated the jobs, which pay on average 27,000 dollars a year, and says they’re part of the state’s ongoing efforts to diversify its job offerings.

A report from VivintSource says Louisiana has the 7th highest number of holiday time thefts of any state in the nation. The highest theft states tend to be clustered in the southeast and west, and PR Specialist Hilary Bird says Louisiana ranked poorly in one particular area…

Larceny is the theft of personal property.

When people think theft, they generally think a violent encounter with a person who forces you to separate with your goods. While that did not make up the majority of crimes, Louisiana still saw it’s fair share of that.

The rate came out to 68.3 thefts per 10,000 residents, nearly 25 percent higher than the national average rate that sits noticeable lower.
