Some would say Sunday’s game between the Saints and Steelers is a match-up between future hall of fame quarterbacks, Drew Brees versus Ben Roethlisberger. Brees has won one Super Bowl championship, while Roethlisberger has two Super Bowl rings. But Saints defensive end Cam Jordan believes Roethlisberger is not even one of top five quarterbacks of his era

The Saints are beat up along their offensive line. Tackle Jermon Bushrod has not practiced this week, while fellow o-linemen Terron Armstead, Max Unger, Andrus Peat and Ryan Ramczyk were all limited at practice yesterday.

The Steelers leading rusher, James Conner, hasn’t practiced this week because of an ankle injury. Conner has missed the last two games.

LSU basketball welcomes 24th ranked Furman to the PMAC tonight. The Paladins are 12-0 and their head coach is Bob Richey, who is a Lake Charles native. One of Furman’s top players is six-foot-eight forward Matt Rafferty, who is averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds a game. He’s also shooting 66-percent from the field.

Also tonight, ULM concludes a four-game homestand by taking on Coppin State. The Warhawks are 6-4.

Tonight at 9:30, the Pelicans will visit the Los Angeles Lakers in a game that will be televised by both ESPN and Fox Sports New Orleans. In the backdrop of this game, is speculation Anthony Davis will one day team up with LeBron James in L-A. Davis says his focus is on his team, but he’s listed as questionable tonight with an illness. Julius Randle and Ian Clark are also questionable with ankle sprains.

If you have Odell Beckham Junior on your fantasy team…bad news. The Giants have announced the talented wide receiver will not play Sunday.

Louisiana personal income growth tanked in the third quarter, down to 2.3 percent, good for 48th in the nation. That’s down from 4.8 and 6.6 percent in the second and first quarters respectively. Governor John Bel Edwards blames the federal tariffs, which he says has resulted in a 101-million dollar drop in farm earnings during the last quarter.

But Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says it’s more complicated than just the tariffs. While they hurt farmers, there was also heavy rains that hit just as harvest time had rolled around.

Strain says the good news is that China has just made two huge purchases for U-S soybeans.

A holiday display dispute in the front of a Mandeville home has taken over social media. An anonymous note was sent to the home of Diana Rowland, by what Rowland calls a “Judgy McJudgeface” neighbor, saying her use of three inflatable dragons as decorations was inappropriate at Christmas and made her neighbors wonder if she was involved in a demonic cult. Louisiana’s longest-serving Supreme Court justice, Pascal Calogero, has died at the age of 87. He was elected to the state’s highest court in 1972 and served on the bench for 36 years, before retiring in 2008. Calogero has been praised for putting rules in place regarding conduct of judges and lawyers, setting up an indigent defender system and getting students involved in the judicial system.

Last night in women’s basketball, LSU defeated the Lady Cajuns 76-54 in the Cajundome. Five Lady Tigers were in double figures as LSU scored 23 points off of turnovers. And Grambling upset previously undefeated Indiana 65-62.

The LSU football program has received a verbal commitment from four-star defensive tackle CamRon Jackson from Haynesville. He’s the 13th ranked Louisiana prospect in the Class of 2020 by 24-7 sports.

Tomorrow night, Louisiana Tech will face the 8-and-5 Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The Bulldogs will try to slow down sophomore quarterback Cole McDonald, who is the nation’s seventh ranked passer.

Edwards blames tariffs for the reason why Louisiana’s personal income growth dropped to two-point-three percent in the third quarter, one of the lowest rates in the nation. A Monroe man is facing one count of solicitation for murder after he allegedly tried to pay a man to kill his estranged wife. Detectives say 47-year-old Michael Faubion asked his roommate, who has a criminal history, if he can contact people in jail that would be willing to execute a hit on his wife. But now Faubion is the one in jail on a one-million dollar bond.

Governor John Bel Edwards held an end of the year press conference today where he hit on some of state’s accomplishments during 2018. He says the state has finally shed its title as having the largest incarceration rate in the world. A Bossier City Policeman has been arrested and charged with 40 counts in relation to animal pornography discovered by State Police. Matt Doyle has more.

A Bossier City patrol cop has been arrested and charged with over three dozen animal sexual abuse related charges. The State Police Special Victims Unit busted 38-year-old Terry Yetman with possession of animal pornography. LSP spokesperson Glen Younger says it’s a horrific crime.

Sexual Abuse of an Animal was a charge that became available to law enforcement May 25th after Governor Edwards signed a stricter bestiality law into effect. The bill received national attention after it was opposed by religious groups for its relation to sodomy laws.

Bossier Police say Yetman was placed on paid administrative leave in November when they were informed by State Police of the investigation. Younger says once enough evidence was collected, Yetman voluntarily surrendered.

Yetman was honored in October for his work against domestic violence. The LSP investigation began in August.

Younger says police continue to look into the alleged misdeeds.

A new study out of Sweden finds the risk of having a heart attack rises nearly 40 percent on Christmas Eve.  Cardiologist Dr. Frank Smart at LSU Health New Orleans says the research shows cold weather which causes arteries to spasm, coupled with emotions and other influences can produce a cardiovascular impact.

The study observed the timing of 283,000 heart attacks over 15 years.  Smart says the research indicates that the peak timing of heart attacks on Christmas Eve is around 10 pm, but says it usually isn’t caused by overeating for a few days.

Smart recommends that if someone suspects they are having a heart attack, the earlier they get to the hospital, the better, but they should not drive themselves to the hospital.

The Senate voted to continue funding the government and extend flood insurance coverage through February 8th, without the inclusion of additional border wall funding sought by the President. Senator John Kennedy says he expects the House will pass the same resolution, but says that doesn’t mean it’’ll be signed by President Trump.

Kennedy says it’s been a frustrating process just making sure the Flood Insurance Program doesn’t lapse, let alone finding a long term solution, but the Louisiana delegation did ensure an extension made it into the legislation.

Democrats have refused to pass any bill that includes the five billion dollars for the Mexican border wall that’s being sought by the White House. Kennedy says he wishes they could’ve got that money in the final bill, but Democratic politics have prevented that.
