Heading into next week’s special session many agencies across the state are facing budget cuts. District attorneys are not exempt from these cutbacks, and it looks like they could be quite steep to the tune of 82 percent if additional funding is not found. Executive Director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association Pete Adams says the financial slash will be overwhelming.

Adams says if salaries get cut, D-As will see prosecutors leave their office.

Despite a budget that calls for deep cuts to higher ed, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System will not raise tuition or fees for the 2018-19 school year, continuing a two-year trend of keeping costs stable for students. LCTCS President Monty Sullivan says the state cannot continue to place the cost of education on the backs of students.
Cut 7 (09) “workforce”

The state has a new savings program that parents can use to help pay for K-through-12 tuition. It’s called Start K-12 and parents can direct their employer to desposit a share of their paycheck directly into the account. Baton Rouge Representative Franklin Foil says families are allowed to withdraw no more than 10-thousand dollars per tax year…

Special night for US Representative Steve Scalise last night in the Congressional charity baseball game. On the one year anniversary of his shooting, he fieled a ground ball at second base and threw to first for the first out of the game.

Two important members of the 2009 Super Bowl team will be inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in September. The franchise announced today running back Pierre Thomas and wide receiver Lance Moore are the latest inductees into the Hall. Moore had that critical two-point conversion in the Super Bowl win versus Indianapolis and spoke about that journey at a press conference today….

Moore is the Saints fifth all-time leading receiver with 346 catches and Thomas is fourth on the team’s career rushing list.

Many are calling it common sense legislation from the NCAA. The governing body of college sports has decided that football players can play up to four-games and still have that count as a red-shirt season. And starting October 15th, college athletes will have the opportunity to transfer to another school, and their current college or coach can’t block the move.

Sports Illustrated reports LSU defensive back Kristian Fulton has filed an appeal to get his two-year suspension reduced in half, so he can play this season. Fulton allegedly used another person’s urine as his own in a February 2017 drug test. Fulton’s attorney says new evidence has been uncovered dealing with the handling of Fulton’s test sample.

Stanley and Sadler will be on three years probation and must perform 480 hours of community service and pay a five-thousand dollar fine.

The maximum sentence for is 10 years in prison and a fine of 25,000 dollars for the charge they were facing. Dorson says the remarkably lenient sentence was judicial malpractice…

Former Jindal Administration staffers are calling on the House to pass the half cent sales tax renewal that would fully fund state government, and avoid cuts to programs like TOPS. Former Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater says failing to pass the revenue bill would harm the most vulnerable people in the state.

Rainwater coauthored an editorial with former Jindal Revenue Secretary Tim Barfield coming out in support of the half cent sales tax renewal.

Many legislators have credited the current fiscal crisis to fiscal mismanagement during the Jindal years, where one time money was often used to fill budget holes, and deep cuts were enacted on higher education. Rainwater says both Jindal and Edwards’ administrations failed to get the legislature to bite on long term tax reform that would end the cycle of fiscal cliffs.

Some have criticized the former Commissioner’s for coming out in support for the half cent sales tax renewal, considering the Jindal Administration’s fiscal legacy and support for wide tax cuts. Rainwater isn’t buying it.

Without additional revenue, TOPS would see a thirty percent cut, along with deep reductions in higher ed and other state services.

Two Arkansas men have avoided time in jail after a state judge in Morehouse Parish ordered the men to do 480 hours of community service and pay a $5,000 fine for sliting a dog’s neck and showing it on Snapchat. Jeff Dorson with the Humane Society of Louisiana says Boots Stanley and Steven Sadler received a slap on the wrist and ordering 480 hours of community service doesn’t send a strong enough message…

A priest accused of sexual misconduct turned himself into the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says 75-year-old Steven Michael Guidry was forthcoming with information about the incident that happened several years ago at his home in Morrow…

The victim was 16-years-old at the time. Guidry has been on administrative leave since word first surfaced of the investigation.

Paul Rainwater and Tim Barfield let their thoughts known in an editorial published in the Advocate. Rainwater says renewing a portion of an expiring one-cent sales tax is the best option, since lawmakers have not supported long-term tax reform…

The Saints cancelled their final minicamp practice, which was scheduled to begin today at 11 AM. NFL teams do that to reward the players for a good offseason. The Saints will return for training camp which starts in late July.

The NCAA has eased the restrictions that have been placed on college athletes when it comes to transferring. Under the new rule, student-athletes no longer have to get permission from their current school or coach if they want to play at another school, even if it’s in the same conference. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says it’s a good move by the NCAA as schools shouldn’t control where a person gets an education….

The other rule change will allow football players to play up to four games and still receive a red-shirt, which gives them another year of athletic eligibility.

LSU players Zach Watson, Zack Hess and Antoine Duplantis have been added to the USA National Team. They will play for Paul Mainieri, who is coaching the squad this summer. The USA team will play 16 games in 22 days against a Minor League All-Star team and international teams from Chinese Tapei, Japan and Cuba. Mainieri says it will be a fun experience.

Benton’s JD Stephens has been named the Class 4A Baseball Coach of the Year. Stephens led the ninth-seeded Tigers to a state title. The Four-A player of the year is Teurlings Catholic’s Peyton Lejune, who was 11-and-3 on the season with a 2.10 ERA. T

he Four-A softball coach of the year is Deridder’s Todd Schulz. The Dragons won its first state title in April and the player of the year is Parkview Baptist’s Annmarie Peavy, who hit .521 with 10 home runs and 62 RBIs.

In major league baseball…the Houston Astros go after their eighth straight win this afternoon when they wrap a series in Oakland. The World Series champs are a half game back of Seattle for first place in the A-L West. The Mariners begin a four-game series against Boston today.

One year ago today, a lone gunman shot Congressman Steve Scalise at a ballpark in Virginia. The bullet shattered Scalise’s hip, damaged several organs and caused a lot of blood loss, nearly killing him. After months of physical therapy, the House Majority Whip returns to the diamond tonight for the Congressional baseball game.

A bid to repair the I-210 bridge in Lake Charles has been submitted that claims the work can be done in 365 days. State Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says their own estimations pegged the time at 17 months at best.

A Shreveport craft beer’s popularity has exceeded the expectations of the brewery behind the beverage. 318 Golden Ale, named for the area code where you can find the beer, was released in March. Great Raft Brewing’s tasting room manager Bob Thames says although you can find other beers from the brewery widely distributed, the idea behind 318 Golden Ale is to have a beer solely for North Louisiana.

So far sales have been great as the brewery initially expected to sell the equivalent of 4,500 cases in the first 90 days. They ended up selling closer to 7,000.

Authorities say Father Guidry told detectives he provided the victim with alcohol and sexually assaulted the teen.
