The Louisiana Health Department is urging residents to protect themselves from West Nile Virus as the state leads the nation in reported human cases. 53 human cases this year as Louisiana has already doubled the number of cases it had for all of 2017. Also two people have died from West Nile, 31 have developed the neuroinvasive form of the disease.

The Louisiana Nation Guard’s 139th Regional Support Group are back in Louisiana today after a nearly year long stay in Iraq. 84 troops, 60 of those from the New Orleans area, and the rest from Alexandria, returned from a deployment that began in December. Sergeant First Class Denny Ricou says the 139th was re-united with family and friends.

Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux is not excited about Drag Queen Story Time, which will be men dressed in drag reading to young kids at the Lafayette Public Library. Robideaux has asked the library to either move or cancel the event scheduled for October sixth, but high school teacher Caleb Powell told the Lafayette City-Parish council it’s a good idea…

The state economic development department has ended its contract with Bell Helicopter, which opened a manfufacturing facility in Lafayette. L-E-D says Bell helicopter has not created the number of jobs it promised when it received 26-million dollars from the state. Secretary Don Pierson says state has met its obligation, Bell Helicopter has not. Bell Helicopter disagrees and the company says it has filed a lawsuit.

A new Katrina Museum is open to the public today after a morning ceremony christened the exhibit showcasing the extensive damage many homes suffered after the levees broke in New Orleans. Levees.org Founder Sandy Rosenthal.

US Senator Bill Cassidy is back from a visit to Mexico City, where he met with Mexican Under Secretary of Foregin Trade Juan Carlos Baker to discuss ongoing negotiations over NAFTA….

The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry say over 40 legislators scored a 90-percent or higher on their annual legislative scorecard. LABI President Stephen Waguespack says important legislation was approved this year that will help the public keep track of government spending and a step was taken to reduce government regulations..

Lafayette-Mayor President Joel Robideaux is asking that the Lafayette public library cancel an event called Drag Queen Story Time, which is scheduled for Saturday October 6th. The library’s newsletter says the event will be an afternoon of books, songs and activities led by drag queens. But the director of the library says there are no plans to cancel the event.

US Senator Bill Cassidy is back from a trip to Central America. Cassidy says he talked about drug trafficking with government officials from Mexico, and both countries agree a new tactic is needed to fight the cartels.

We’ve learned why starting guard Ed Ingram has been suspended from the LSU football team. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault in Dallas County. Ingram was booked on August 2nd, one day before the team reported for training camp. Three LSU players have been suspended because of arrests in the last two weeks.

The Advocate Reports that LSU will not allow recently departed quarterback Justin McMillan to transfer to another SEC school or a school that LSU will play this season or next year. McMillan was reportedly under the assumption he could transfer to any school as a graduate transfer. But the NCAA’s new transfer rule that prevents schools from blocking student-athletes from transferring to a certain school doesn’t go into effect until October 15th.

Grambling State wants to add alcohol sales to home football and basketball games. The university is seeking a permit through the state Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control. President Rick Gallot told the News Star that fans have requested the opportunity to buy alcohol when watching games at the Hole and the Fredrick Hobdy Assembly Center.

Louisiana Tech has one less quarterback on its roster. Redshirt freshman Elijah Walker has announced he’s transferring, leaving the school with three scholarship quarterbacks.

Governor John Bel Edwards was in Livingston Parish today. Two years ago, much of that parish was under water from the 2016 flood. Edwards was there to celebrate the parish’s recovery and how FEMA has agreed to rebuild two schools that were substantially damaged.

A 72-year-old New Orleans woman has been arrested for an August 8th hit and run incident on the interstate onramp in Jefferson Parish. Elva Lafaye has been charged with felony Hit and Run in relation to the incident where authorities say she hit a man, and then sped away from the scene. State Police Spokesperson Melissa Matey says the public was the key in making the arrest.

A judge will allow evidence of previous hazing behavior in the trial of two former LSU students, Sean-Paul Gott and Ryan Isto, who were some of those allegedly responsible for Maxwell Gruver’s hazing death. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says its powerful evidence that could sway a jury, but says using that kind of evidence could also backfire.

According to a new study by the American Federation of Teachers, Louisiana spends over one billion dollars less on education, when adjusted for inflation, than it did prior to the recession of 2008. Louisiana Federation of Teachers spokesman Les Landon says it’s time to pay attention to education funding

If the state wanted to keep even with the level of spending in 2008, it would need to invest $834 million in colleges and universities, and $248 million in K through 12 education.

A trial date of December fourth has been set for two of the former LSU students charged with hazing in the alleged drinking death of 18-year-old Maxwell Gruver. Legal analyst Tim Meche says that date might not hold…

According to court records, prosecutors have learned Sean-Paul Gott and Ryan Matthew Isto were involved another suspected hazing incident days before Gruver’s seath.

In Bossier Parish, a man and a woman have been arrested after they allegedly forced a 13-year-old girl to smoke met in a hotel room. Authorities say 27-year-old Bryan Smiley of Haughton also had sex with the teenage victim. 42-year-old Shelly Carey of Bossier City has also been charged with third degree rape.
