ULM defensive end Kerry Starks has been suspended for this Saturday’s game at Florida State because he spit in the face of a Grambling player. the incident occurred during the Warhawks 31-9 victory. Coach Matt Viator says Starks’ backup, Sam Miller, might also miss the game because of a shoulder injury.

The Ragin Cajuns are preparing for their home opener against Liberty on Saturday. Flames head coach Hugh Freeze coached the game from a hospital in the press box last weekend because of an infection that developed from recent back surgery. Former four-term governor Edwin Edwards is hospitalized after an extreme blood sugar drop that left him unresponsive. Edwards was rushed to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. State Police arrested two people involved in a wild shooting scene on I-10 in Jefferson Davis Parish. One of the men booked, 36-year-old Trinity Coleman of Franklin, is a suspect in the murder of a female in Franklin. Trooper Derek Senegal says while pursuing Coleman yesterday,  57-year-old Clarence Fine of Jeanerette pulled off the side of the road and started shooting at Coleman

State Police began chasing Coleman in Acadia Parish and his vehicle finally came to stop near Welsh after troopers successfully deployed spike strips.

A 16-year-old girl Lafayette girl dies from a gunshot wound and a 17-year-old boy is now in jail on Negligent Homicide charges as a result.

Two days ago officers responded to a report of a shooting involving a juvenile around 8pm. Lafayette Police Corporal Bridgette Dugas says when authorities arrived the girl was still alive.

But the girl passed away yesterday as a result of the gunshot.

Dugas says after attempting to save the girl, police questioned the boy at the residence and discovered the incident may have been a tragic accident.

Dugas says it appears for now that the shooting was not intentional and it isn’t the first time this year a lack of gun safety led to a death.

The Treasurer’s Office unveils a new transparency tool that lets Louisianans track construction project costs on a parish by parish basis and see just how much debt state residents have accrued.

Treasurer John Schroder says the website gives you an opportunity to see just where state government prioritizes construction spending.

The top recipients of the state’s three billion dollar transportation budget in 2019 are DOTD at 50 percent, followed by coastal protection at 17 percent, and education at 16 percent.

The tool also provides viewers a chance to measure the state’s bond, general liability, and pension debt levels. Schroder says you can also measure how much each citizen would have to pay to clear the debt.

Louisiana’s per person debt is 1,627 dollars, good for 16th highest in the nation. The national average is 1,447 dollars, and the southern regional average is 1,148 dollars.

Schroder says he hopes people who visit the website will get a better idea of how the state’s taxing spending priorities line up with theirs.

New Saints linebacker Kiko Alonso says he’s excited to be a member of the Black and Gold. New Orleans acquired the 29-year-old in a trade with Miami over the weekend. Last seasn, Alonso had 125 tackles and three interceptions. He says he’ll do whatever he can to help the team win.

One of the surprise cuts to get down to a 53-man roster was safety and special teams standout Chris Banjo. But Coach Sean Payton said on Monday the door is not shut for Banjo to return.

Despite losing to Kansas State in its season opener, Nicholls has moved up two spots to number ten in the STATS FCS Top 25 poll. The Colonels are on the road again this Saturday to face Prairie View A-and-M. Southeastern Louisiana shocked Jacksonville State and they find themselves ranked 23rd. The Lions will not play this Saturday. S-L-U’s game against Bethune-Cookman has been cancelled because of Hurricane Dorian.

Former LSU Tiger and now Tulane starting quarterback Justin McMillan was named as the American Athletic Conference offensive player of the week as the senior accounted for three touchdowns in the Green Wave’s season opening win over F-I-U. Tulane is at Auburn this Saturday.

Its voter registration week, so the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office is making a push to get adults registered to vote for the fall elections. Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin says the deadlines to register for the October 12th primary are later this month…

LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow was named SEC Player of the Week today. Burrow tied a school record by throwing five touchdown passes in the Tigers blowout win over Georgia Southern. Burrow was 23 of 27 for 278 yards. The 55 points by the way is the most scored by an LSU team in its season opener since 2000.

Former LSU Tiger and now Tulane starting quarterback Justin McMillan was named as the American Athletic Conference offensive player of the week as the senior accounted for three touchdowns in the Green Wave’s season opening win over F-I-U. McMillan had 250 total yards, 199 threw the air and 51 yards on the ground.

And the Louisiana Sports Writers Association gives its defensive player of the week honors to ULM linebacker Chase Day, who recorded a career-high 12 tackles in the Warhawks 31-9 victory over Grambling. Day also had his second-career interception.

A week from tonight the Saints will open the regular season against the Houston Texans. Coach Sean Payton says starting linebacker Alex Anzalone should be able to play after leaving the preseason opener with an undisclosed injury. Anzalone is entering his third season after recording 59 tackles, two sacks and three forced fumbles last season. And Payton there’s a possibiltiy the team will bring back veteran safety Chris Banjo, who was cut on Saturday. Banjo was a leader on special teams.

Southeastern Louisiana is ranked 23rd in this week’s STATS FCS Top 25 poll. The Lions upset five-time defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Jacksonville State on Thursday to break into the Top 25. Nicholls, who lost to Kansas State in its season opener, actually moved up a couple of spots to number 10. The Lions are scheduled to play at Bethune-Cookman this Saturday, while the Colonels are at Prairie View.

There is a college football game to watch tonight as 9th ranked Notre Dame is at Louisville.

Its Labor Day and the job market is getting lots of attention in the governor’s race with the Edwards administration touting full employment, but the Republican challengers say the state is the only one to have lost jobs over the last year. LSU Economist Loren Scott says the economy is not growing at a rapid pace.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation has received 76 million dollars from the federal government that will go towards expanding I-12 between U-S 190 and LA 59 and five bridge replacement projects around the state. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says this year’s allocation from the feds is slightly lower than last year and below the 100 million anticipated, but it comes after years of record levels of funding.
