10 inmates playing flag football at David Wade Correctional Center in Homer are hospitalized this morning after they were struck by lightening last night at around 6 PM. The state Department of Corrections says the lightening strike came without warning as protocol calls for prison officials to clear the yard when potentially dangerous weather approaches. Nine prisoners are listed in stable condition, one in critical condition.

The national discussion over measures to stop gun violence heats up as lawmakers are back in Washington DC after the summer recess. Southwest Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins says solutions need to be found that do not infringe on the second amendment rights of citizens.

Democrats in the House are pushing legislation to limit access to high capacity gun magazines and prevent a person convicted of a hate crime from buying a firearm.

Today is the statistical peak of the hurricane season. So far there have been seven named storms and if we get seven more that’s right in the middle of NOAA’s projection. Hurricane Rita and Juan are big storms that hit Louisiana in the second half of the hurricane season. The Saints were once again on the wrong end of an officiating mistake. The team lost 15 seconds off the clock when 10-seconds ran off the clock at the end of the first half. The runoff should have occurred with 41 seconds left instead of 26-seconds after the instant replay judge determined Mike Thomas got enough yards for a first down. The Saints elected for the 10-second runoff instead of burning a timeout, but the 10-seconds should have come off at 41-seconds, instead of 26. Brees says the mistake is unacceptable.

Fourth-ranked LSU hosts Northwestern State this Saturday. Coach Ed Orgeron says two starters on the D-Line are not expected to play because of injuries, Glen Logan and Rashard Lawrence. Coach O says that will give other guys a chance to play

Orgeron also says outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson suffered an injury and is walking around in a boot. He’s questionable for the game against the Demons. Kickoff at Tiger Stadium is 6:30 Saturday night. Next week, LSU visits Vanderbilt with an 11 am kick-off.

Also this weekend, Louisiana Tech heads on the road to face Bowling Green. The Ragin Cajuns host Texas Southern, while ULM has the week off after nearly beating Florida State last week. Tulane hosts Missouri State.

Medical marijuana has been available in Louisiana for a little over a month and the program’s future is a major issue in the race for Agriculture Commissioner, the department in charge of regulation.

A win for the Saints tonight and they’ll find themselves all alone in first place in the NFC South. That’s because their three division rivals all lost their season opener. Atlanta lost to Minnesota, San Francisco beat Tampa Bay and Carolina fell short against the L-A Rams. New Orleans visits the Rams in Week 2.

LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow is the SEC Player of the Week for the second straight week. Burrow threw for 471 yards and four touchdowns. The Tigers offense got off to a bit of a slow start, scoring just a field goal in the first quarter. But Burrow started to get in a rhythm in the second quarter and the Longhorns defense couldn’t stop him

The NFL is not happy that former LSU Tiger Odell Beckham Junior was wearing a 350-thousand dollar watch while playing in yesterday’s game. That violated a rule that prohibits players from wearing hard objects. Beckham caught seven passes in the Browns 43-13 loss to Tennessee.

For the second straight week, LSU’s Joe Burrow has been named SEC Offensive Player of the Week. The Tigers Q-B threw for 471 yards and four touchdowns in the 45-38 win over Texas. Burrow completed 79-percent of his passes on Saturday and for the season his completion percentage is 82-percent.

The Tigers defense also had a hard time slowing down Longhorn Q-B Sam Ehlinger as he threw for 401 yards and four touchdowns. Coach Ed Orgeron not happy with how the defense played…

The Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control says they’ve permitted 775 Louisiana businesses to sell CBD products. The state agency has received over one-thousand permit applications since legislation was approved that set up the regulatory structure. Retailers must follow a long list of requirements to receive a permit.

Two small children are dead following a house fire on Saturday night in Jackson Parish. Three children escaped the blaze and State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says the lone adult inside the home couldn’t get to the two kids who died…

Browning says investigators believe a child playing with a lighter started the fire.

After performing one of the first heart transplants in the Gulf South 50 years ago, Ochsner Health System sets a milestone of completing its 1,000th heart transplant, joining 13 other prestigious healthcare systems in the country to accomplish the feat. Dr. Aditya Bansel says it’s been a team effort.
