LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow has been named the Maxwell Award Player of the week for his spectacular performance in the win over Texas. Burrow threw for 471 yards and four touchdowns and the senior Q-B is now getting consideration for the Heisman. Heisman voter and LSU beat reporter for the USA Today Network, Glen Guilbeau, says Burrow is among the second tier of candidates…

Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa has the best odds to win the Heisman, three to one, but Burrow is now tied with Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts at five to one.

LSU was missing several starters at practice yesterday. Senior linebacker Michael Divinity, right guard Damien Lewis, outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson and defensive ends Rashard Lawrence and Glen Logan. Fourth-ranked LSU hosts Northwestern State on Saturday.

There’s now a Louisiana connection with all of the drama surrounding Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown. Former LSU gymnast Britney Taylor claims in a federal civil lawsuit that Brown sexually assaulted her three times. Taylor is Brown’s former trainer and the two met while they attended Central Michigan. Taylor went on to compete at LSU in 2012 and 2013. Brown says the sexual relationship was consensual.

The Ragin Cajuns host Texas Southern this Saturday. UL-Lafayette Coach Billy Napier wants to see his team get off to a better start…

Today marks the 18th anniversary of 9-11 and following the terrorist attack on the Big Apple, Louisiana residents raised money to buy a new fire truck for the New York Fire Department. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning has started a Go Fund Me Account to build a small museum in Baton Rouge to house the Spirit of Louisiana. Browning says the fire truck was used in New York and New Orleans…

It was a terrific football game in the Louisiana Superdome last night and to make it better for Who Dats, the Saints won, beating the Houston Texans 30-28. New Orleans QB Drew Brees threw for 370 yards and two touchdowns, while Houston signal caller DeShaun Watson put on a show, scoring four total TDs and routinely breaking the Black and Gold’s back on third down. Coach Sean Payton says nothing seemed to slow him down…

But the Saints were able to keep Texans All-Pro defensive end J-J Watt out of the backfield. Right tackle Ryan Ramczyk did such a good job on Watt, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year didn’t record a tackle or sack.

And the Saints running game looked fine without Mark Ingram. New Orleans rushed for 148 yards, led by Alvin Kamara’s 97 yards on 13 carries.

LSU had its share of players who had to leave Saturday’s game at Texas because of muscle cramping. Tigers Coach Ed Orgeron says the visting locker room at Texas did not have A-C, plus it was hot and the defense was on the field for a long time. Orgeron says they tried to prevent the cramps, but they’ll need to be more proactive in the future…

Texas officials says they were not aware of any issues with the A-C in the visiting locker room and they say it’s working just fine.

In the lastest high school football polls, St. Thomas More is the new number one team in Four-A as the Cougars moved past Karr, who lost against John Curtis last week. The Patriots remain number one in Five-A, followed by West Monroe. Southern Lab is the new number one ranked team in One-A. Oak Grove drops to number two following a loss to Benton.

The LSU men’s basketball schedule is out for the upcoming season. The Tigers begin defense of their SEC title on January 4th at Tennessee.

Ten inmates at David Wade Correctional Center in Homer suffered injuries after lightning strikes the field where they were playing flag football.

Department of Corrections spokesperson Ken Pastorick says a weather event was closing in, but the flag football game was not called off because there were no signs of imminent danger.

The strike hit just adjacent to where the inmates were playing.

Nine of the inmates have returned to the facility after spending time at a local hospital. Pastorick says they suffered symptoms common to those who survive lightning strikes.

Pastorick says the policy was followed, and if a strike had been detected then they would have moved the inmates off the field.

The University of Texas claims LSU Coach Ed Orgeron’s comments about the visitor’s locker room having no air conditioning was the first time they were made aware of the issue.  Coach O says he had intel about the situation before showing up.

Temps peaked at 103 for Saturday’s game in Austin that saw the Tigers win 45-38.  Orgeron says the humidity was not as bad as it is typically in Louisiana.

Orgeron says despite the best efforts to combat the effects of the heat, many of the players began to cramp up.

New Iberia Police have charged a 20-year-old man in last month’s shooting death of 17-year-old Garon Lewis, who was found dead in a vehicle at an intersection on August 16th. Captain John Babin says 20-year-old Trevonce Bernard was taken into police custody last night

Bernard’s bond has been set at 220-thousand dollars. Babin says they are not saying what evidence they have on Bernard and the investigation continues

Lewis was a quarterback for New Iberia High School and this was his senior season. His father is Raymond Lewis, an Iberia Parish School Board member. The elder Lewis spoke at a press conference

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical disturbance near the southeast Bahamas that’s expected to move over the Florida straits and into the Gulf of Mexico late this week and into this weekend. Forecasters give the tropical wave a low chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next five days.

New Iberia Police announce an arrest in last month’s murder of 17-year-old Garon Lewis, who was found shot to death in a vehicle. 20-year-old Trevonce Bernard has been charged with second-degree murder. Police are releasing very few details and the victim’s father, Raymond Lewis, gave this message during a press conference today…

Texas officials say the air conditioning in the visitor’s locker room at the football stadium is in good working order. LSU Coach Ed Orgeron says they had to bring fans in to cool the room down before Saturday’s game in Austin. Several Tigers suffered muscle cramps and Orgeron says the heat got to them…

In other NFL news. former LSU running back Derrius Guice undergoes an MRI on his right knee. Guice had just 18 yards on 10 carries in the season opener after missing all of 2018 with a torn ACL.

True freshman kicker Cade York was also named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week. York connected on three field goals and made all of his extra points. And the Dodd Trophy of the Week goes to Coach Ed Orgeron who orchestrated the Tigers first ever win on the road against a team ranked in the top 10.

In the Stats FCS Poll, Nicholls is ranked 12th. After a week off the Colonels are back in action this Saturday against Priairie View. Southeastern Louisiana is ranked 23rd. The Lions will visit Ole Miss this Saturday.

Medical marijuana has been available in Louisiana for a little over a month and the program’s future is a major issue in the race for Agriculture Commissioner, the department in charge of regulation. Incumbent Ag Commissioner, Republican Mike Strain, says 10,000 vials have been produced under his department’s watch, and he expects the medical marijuana program to keep growing.

Life is good this morning for Saints fans after the team’s thrilling 30-28 win over the Texans to open the 2019 season. Wil Lutz booted a 58-yard field goal as time expired for the game-winning points. If New Orleans lost, fans would have pointed towards another mistake by the refs, when they failed to run 10 seconds off the clock at the appropriate time. Quarterback Drew Brees says it ended up costing them three points right before halftime..

10 inmates from the David Wade Correctional Center in Homer are in the hospital this morning after they were hit by lightning while playing flag football at around 6 PM yesterday. Nine prisoners are in stable condition and one is in critical condition. The Department of Corrections says the lightning strike came without warning.

Wil Lutz’s career-long 58-yard field goal as time expired gave the Saints their first season-opening win since 2013. New Orleans was down 14-3 at halftime but rallied for a 30-28 win. The fourth-year pro nailed the game-winner after the offense led a last-second drive after Houston went ahead by one point in the last minute of the game….

Today marks the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season as conditions are favorable for storm development. So far, there have been seven named storms and State Climatologist Barry Keim says the current rate of storm development is in line with NOAA’s latest forecast.

So far, Hurricane Barry has been the only storm to impact Louisiana this season, but Keim says it’s too soon to let your guard down.

Congress has returned from its summer recess and the debate over gun control intensifies. Democratic leaders want expanded background checks for nearly all gun buyers. Louisiana Republican Congressman Mike Johnson says the ideas presented from the left so far, offer little hope of finding a bipartisan solution…
