The Saints concluded the regular season last night with a 16-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins. New Orleans started Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback and he was 9-of-13 for 83 yards and a touchdown to Emmanuel Butler. Half of his yards came on a pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey. The coaches will now have to cut the roster down to 53 and that group will face Houston in the regular-season opener on September 9th.

The 2019 season kicks off tomorrow night for the sixth-ranked LSU Tigers as they take on Georgia Southern. There’s been a lot of talk in the offseason about an improved offense, but the voice of the Tigers, Chris Blair, believes the Bayou Bengals will have one of the best defenses in the country

Kick-off is at 6:30.

Big wins last night for Tulane and Southeastern Louisiana. The Green Wave were impressive in their 42-14 win over F-I-U. Quarterback Justin McMillan was efficient, 14 of 18 for 199 yards and two touchdowns. McMillan also had a 17-yard touchdown run right before half to put the Green Wave up 28-7.

In the F-C-S, Southeastern Louisiana hammered sixth-ranked Jacksonville State 35-14. Chason Virgil and Cole Kelley combined to throw for three touchdowns and the Lions defense led by former McNeese coach Lance Guidry forced four turnovers.

Northwestern State dropped its season opener to U-T Martin, falling 42-20. Shelton Eppler threw for 387 yards and three touchdowns, but the Demons didn’t score in the second half.

And in NBA news…the Pelicans announce that forward Darius Miller tore his Achilles Tendon. The injury is expected to sideline him for seven to eight months, after signing a two-year, 14 million dollar contract in July.

The only team the Eagles played last year with a similar talent level to LSU was Clemson. They lost that game in the other Death Valley, 38-7.

Three college football teams from Louisiana begin their season tonight. Tulane hosts F-I-U. On the F-C-S level, Southeastern Louisiana takes on sixth-ranked Jacksonville State, while Northwestern State is at U-T Martin. The Lions and Demons have coaches entering their second season, Frank Scelfo for S-L-U and Braid Laird for Northwestern.

Caddo Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested a California man in Shreveport for his part in a texting scam that resulted in over 100-thousand dollars being stolen from numerous bank accounts. Sheriff’s office spokesperson Cindy Chadwick says victims received a text message that said their bank cards were locked and they needed to call and give personal info to unlock them.

Chadwick says authorities circulated the picture of 39-year-old Dennis Busch to local businesses. Busch was arrested after a drug store employee spotted him.

Two other arrest warrants have been issued and there is an additional unidentified suspect. Chadwick says consumers need to protect themselves from similar scams.

An independent poll shows Governor Edwards’ support has slipped and is now within the margin of error for potentially having to go into a run-off.

Edwards sits at 52 percent in the latest survey from Verne Kennedy. UL Lafayette Poli Sci Professor Pearson Cross says that’s dangerously close to a highly unpredictable run-off scenario.

Edwards’ favorability rating dropped from 52 percent in April to 45 percent when the poll was conducted two weeks ago.

On the Republican side of the race, it looks like Eddie Rispone’s ad blitz has paid off. Cross says He’s at 19 percent, just six points shy of GOP frontrunner Congressman Abraham.

The pollster estimates Rispone has risen 12 points since his April survey.

The Congressman had an early name recognition advantage and has piled-up GOP endorsements, but Cross says if he wants to hold off Rispone and make a run-off, he needs to run more ads…

Abraham still fares about two points better than Rispone in a hypothetical run-off, but both candidates at this point still would fail to unseat the Governor.

Two high school students from Summerfield, who State Police say were not wearing seat belts, were killed in a two-vehicle wreck last night on Louisiana Highway two in Claiborne Parish. Trooper Brent Hardy says 17-year-old Tony Singleton of Haynesville was the driver

Singleton and his 15-year-old passenger Dequez Neal died, while the driver of the other vehicle, sustained minor injuries. Hardy says if the teens were buckled up, they may have survived

On the 14th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness activates its Crisis Action Team to monitor Hurricane Dorian.  While a Florida landfall is expected, GOHSEP spokesperson Mike Steele says the activation comes as the storm’s exact track is uncertain.

Steele says even if Dorian has no impact on the state, it’s an important reminder to everyone to be vigilant.

Governor John Bel Edwards was in Monroe today to announce that all K-12 schools in Louisiana will begin using the RAVE Mobile Safety App, which can alert authorities to emergencies on campus. Teachers can quickly request immediate assistance from law enforcement by hitting the Rave Panic Button app.

In college football action tonight, Tulane hosts F-I-U. Green Wave Head Coach Willie Fritz is entering his fourth season and has a new offensive coordinator in Will Hall who has brought to a new scheme to the uptown school. Also tonight, Southeastern Louisiana hosts Jacksonville State, while Northwestern State is at U-T Martin.

Louisiana Tech senior quarterback J’Mar Smith is set to make his 28th collegiate start when he leads the Bulldogs into Austin to take on the 10th ranked Texas Longhorns. Smith says he prepared well in the offseason and believes he’s ready to take a big step in his development

Kickoff Saturday is at 7 PM. It’s the first-ever meeting between Tech and Texas in football.

The Board of Regents has set a goal that by 2030, 60-percent of all adults between the ages of 25 and 64 will have either a college degree or some sort of post-secondary credential. Only 44-percent of Louisiana adults currently have reached that benchmark. Higher Ed Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed says the labor market is approaching a point where a high school diploma just won’t cut it…

A recent study showed Louisiana was one of the states most at risk of losing jobs to automation and robotics.

Louisiana schools are using money from a federal lawsuit against Volkswagen to replace old diesel school buses with new alternative fuel buses. The state received nearly 20-million dollars from the settlement, and Louisiana Clean Fuels co-coordinator Tyler Hermann says the money will subsidize half of the cost of alternative fuel buses for school districts….

The settlement money was disbursed to states based on the number of VWs sold in each state.

The Board of Regents sets an ambitious goal of making sure 60 percent of all working-age adults in Louisiana have post-secondary education by 2030. Higher Education Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed says that would mean more than doubling the number of credentials the state currently produces annually.

That comes out to increasing credentials from 40,000 a year to over 85,000 a year.

You can now get to the Lafayette area from the east by using I-10. The westbound lanes over the Atchafalaya Basin re-opened yesterday afternoon after they were shutdown for two days, because of clean-up and an inspection following a fiery mutli-vehicle wreck that killed an out of state truck driver. Still no exact cause, but DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says..

Investigators 17-year-old Tony Singleton and 15-year-old Neal Dequez were not wearing their seat belts. L-S-P say Singleton lost control of his Honda Accord and hit a Chevy Suburban. The driver of the Suburban was buckled up and suffered moderate injuries.

In 2017 VW pleaded guilty to installing software on their vehicles that hid their nitrogen oxide emission levels. Hermann says money from the settlement can only be used for a narrow range of projects, like purchasing cleaner buses or installing electric charging stations.
