Former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow may have collected many accolades during his time as a Tiger, but he now has a new honor thanks to the Baton Rouge Zoo.  Zoo spokesperson Robyn Lott says the public nominated and then voted on the top three names for a baby giraffe and “Burreaux” was the one to stick.

After filtering through the nominations, zoo officials picked the top three names which also included Romeo and Kiume, which is Swahili for masculine and strong.  Lott says through the voting the zoo was able to raise over $2000.

Burreaux is on exhibit Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.  Lott says Burreaux is the twentieth giraffe to be born at the zoo.

A 71-year-old retired farmer has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of manslaughter for the 1989 disappearance of his wife, Isabelle and her friend Marian Coutee. Rapides Sheriff Earl Hilton credits the D-A’s office for prosecuting the case quickly after Robert Blair was arrested last October

Deputies got enough evidence to arrest Blair, after the truck, Isabelle Blair and Coutee were last seen riding in, was found on the property once owned by Robert Blair. Possible human remains were also found on the property and they are still being analyzed by the LSU FACES Lab. Hilton wonders how Robert Blair lived with himself all of these years

Since Blair is 71-years-old, that means he’ll likely spend the rest of his life at Angola. Rapides Parish Assistant District Attorney Christopher Bowman says the victims’ families were fine with the sentencing

A report by the Advocate alleges Attorney General Jeff Landry, who rails against immigration issues, brought in skilled Mexican laborers on work visas to construct an LNG plant in Cameron Parish.

Landry political advisor Brent Littlefield says yes, the AG did help bring foreign workers to the job site, but it was only temporary.

Littlefield says the jobs were advertised locally first, but Advocate reporter Bryn Stole says the H2B skilled worker visa program is controversial and opposed by both the Trump admin and labor unions.

Stole says there is no definitive proof Landry broke the law in these dealings, but they did uncover documents indicating his companies may have misled the feds to get access to the visas.

Stole says the paper also discovered Landry and his brother Benjamin, had dealings with a now-imprisoned “labor broker” who illegally brought over 1,000 Mexican workers into the country.

Littlefield says the whole investigation was bogus, no laws were broken, and all the information uncovered was public record already. He also took issue with Advocate reporters’ behavior.

A carjacking suspect is dead after being shot during an altercation with Bossier City Police on Thursday.  State Police is now investigating the incident.  Trooper Brent Hardy says an officer responded to an attempted carjacking near the CenturyLink center.

Hardy says they now have a positive identification on the suspect.

A Bossier City permit inspector underwent surgery today after suffering a broken shoulder during the initial carjacking attempt at the hands of the deceased.

The inspector had gotten out of the truck when the suspect hopped in and upon trying to stop him, was pushed to the ground, causing the injury.

Louisiana has the second-highest decline in marriage rate in the country. That’s according to Quote Wizard who used data from the National Centers for Health Statistics. The state’s marriage rate fell 28-percent according to the report. But LSU Health New Orleans clinical psychologist Amy Dickson says this doesn’t mean there are fewer couples in committed relations…

100 new jobs are coming to Webster Parish as a Canadian Company called E-I Williams Industries plans to invest 700-thousand dollars into an existing facility to manufacture industrial sound-control equipment. According to a Quote Wizard report that used data from the National Centers for Health Statistics, there was a 28-percent decline in Louisiana’s marriage rate from 2009 to 2018. That’s the second-highest decline in the country. But the same report also shows Louisiana’s divorce rate declined nearly 23-percent during that same time period. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry has been known to rail against illegal immigration, but a lengthy report from the Advocate finds evidence that three firms that have ties to Landry were connected with a Houston man, who has been convicted of visa fraud for bringing hundreds of Mexican workers into the U-S under false pretenses. A video recorded by Landry’s brother says they are victims of a liberal newspaper trying to damage high profile conservatives.

Zion Williamson set another career-high with 32 points but the Pelicans had their three-game losing streak snapped last night with a 123 to 118 loss to Oklahoma City. Turnovers were a problem for New Orleans as they committed 17 of them. All-Star Brandon Ingram also missed his third straight game with a sprained ankle. The All-Star break begins today, Williamson will play in tonight’s rising stars game in Chicago.

Louisiana Tech ended F-I-U’s three-game winning streak with a nail-biting 60-57 win over the Panthers. Amorie Archibald had 17 points and put the Bulldogs up for good with 2:30 minutes to go with a bucket.

Cedric Russell had a season-high 29 points, including a career-high seven 3-pointers for the Cajuns last night, but U-L Lafayette lost to South Alabama 78-75 in a game that featured 16 lead changes.

ULM ended a ten-game losing streak with a 74-71 win over Troy. Michael Ertel had 23 points. Also the first road win of the season for ULM.

Louisiana has the 9th worst business tax climate in the nation according to the Tax Foundation’s 2020 report. Policy Analyst Janelle Cammenga says that’s largely due to having the 3rd highest sales tax in the nation, an above-average corporate tax rate, and decentralized sales tax collection.

Webster Parish is welcoming a new manufacturing facility with the arrival of E.I. Williams Industries. President of the North Louisiana Economic Partnership Scott Martinez says the Canadian company specializes in sound-control equipment such as vent silencers, fan silencers, industrial silencers, and noise enclosures.

Martinez says E-I Williams will hire 100 workers over the next five years.

The Advocate newspaper has on its front page today a lengthy investigative piece that claims firms owned by Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry conducted business with a felon who broke immigration laws. Two days ago, Landry posted on Twitter his brother has been the victim of months of harassment by the Advocate in an apparent attempt to attack him.

For the upcoming session, Covington Representative Mark Wright has filed a bill that would change the state’s constitution so the governor and lieutenant governor are elected jointly. Wright says it would result in more efficient operations in the governor’s office and the lieutenant governor can be used as a high profile surrogate when not available…

The Pelicans host the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight in the final game before the All-Star break. New Orleans All-Star Brandon Ingram is a game-time decision because of his sprained ankle. He’s already missed the last two games. New Orleans has won three in a row, while O-K-C has won seven straight road games. Tip-off is at 7 PM.

The Pelicans Nicolo Melli has been added to the Friday night’s Rising Stars game in Chicago, the site of the NBA All-Star Weekend. Nelli will play on team World along with Pelicans teammate Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Zion Williamson will be on Team USA.

LSU basketball coach Will Wade expects Charles Manning to play Saturday. He’s been out with a fractured foot and Wade is anxious to get another healthy body on the bench. The Tigers enter the weekend tied for first place in the SEC, with Kentucky and Auburn. Auburn beat Alabama in overtime last night.

Louisiana Tech looks to snap a two-game losing streak tonight when they host F-I-U. Both teams are 8-and-4 in Conference USA Action and in a three-way tie for third place. Bulldogs coach Eric Konkol says his players understand the importance of tonight’s game…
