A new study from the University Council on Gender Equity finds that LSU male professors make significantly more than female professors, in some cases a difference of 20 to 30 thousand dollars a year. Assistant Accounting Professor Christine Cheng says these numbers are preliminary but noteworthy.
A spokesman for LSU says the data used in the report is missing variables such as some salary offers being based on experience, education and other market factors. Cheng says additional research needs to be done where outside factors are considered but these numbers are correct.
The report took the total wages and calculated the average monthly pay of professors. Cheng says there are many factors that go into each teacher’s salary, but it’s alarming that a male professor could make 20-thousand dollars more than a female doing the same job. She says they plan to dive deeper into these numbers.

The embattled National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire on Friday if Congress doesn’t take some sort of action. The House has already passed a five-year re-authorization of the NFIP, but the Senate is very wrapped up in dealing with the tax reform legislation right now. Congressman Clay Higgins predicts there will be a brief extension to buy some time..:
Higgins hopes they will be able to come up with something soon, to give home owners some certainty about flood-insurance coverage and rates. He knows there is a lot of activity taking place on Capitol Hill right now, but the public is tired of the constant, “kicking the can down the road”…:
Louisiana’s delegation has been pushing for reforms in the program that keep premiums affordable and don’t restrict coverage for flood-prone areas. Higgins says he’s frustrated that residents aren’t able to get answers faster than they do…:

You may be thinking about using heaters and fireplaces to keep you warm now that winter weather has arrived. The chances for house fires increases, especially if proper precautions are not followed. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says it’s not advisable to use space heaters for an extended period of time, but if you do…
Browning says there’s added concern because many homes have Christmas decorations up…
There were 46 fire related deaths last year in Louisiana. Browning says that number will increase this year, even though his department educates the public on fire safety…
He says the first line of defense for a house fire anytime of year is working smoke alarms.
