New Census Bureau data shows Louisiana has the highest poverty rate in the nation, with one in five residents living below the poverty line. Figures out this week show our state’s median household income sits around $60,000 a year, far below the national average of $87,000.

Good news out of New Orleans as students there are showing the fastest academic growth in the nation. That’s according to a study from Stanford University. It’s a huge turnaround from before Katrina, when more than 60 percent of New Orleans schools were considered academically unacceptable. Now they’re mostly charter schools. But education reform advocate Leslie Jacobs says even that doesn’t explain the vast improvement.
